I know Rymer had injuries but isn't his deal s bat speed and that pernicious condition affecting many 4A players: allergy to breaking pitches?

His batspeed got wrecked by his shoulder injury.

Note a growing level of speculation of a MLB work stoppage at the end of the current CBA (Dec, 2021).

With the significant amount of additional revenues going to the clubs ... the Union is upset that the money going to players is not proportionally growing. Longer term contracts are getting shorter, better paid veterans are getting dropped for rookies, teams are actively avoiding the luxury tax (even though the dollars are not that great), and teams are not signing players early and are squeezing them into lower contracts by delaying signing until near ST. If you are the teams ... it is just good business in part supported by more sophisticated analytics. If you are the workers, the teams are making greater profits on the back of the workers. Sure sounds like the classical position for a strike especially with Union leader Tony Clark being more hard line and the Union having hired a major labor lawyer.

Might that impact how teams choose to offer long term contracts ... if there is a chance (good chance) that 2022 is shortened / eliminated) via a work stoppage? Have to be somewhat cautious about contracts beyond 2021 since the rules may (likely) will be different in the new CBA.

Note: 2022 will be the best chance the Padre hot talent lava will carry them to the World Series ... until the season is lost. Just the way it works. 🙁

Side comments about the potential moves in the new CBA:

1. Expansion to 32 teams (balances leagues to even numbers to benefit scheduling strategies along with just money for expansion).

2. DH in AL and NL

3. With 32 teams and universal DH .... regional realignment. Key concepts:

a. creating more rivalries ... e.g. NYY and NYM in the same league (or CWS and the CUBS)

b. easier access for fans who want to travel to road games

c. TV revenue ... stemming from all (most) games in the same time zone ... avoids east coast teams having games starting on TV at 10PM and running to 2 AM (not a lot of viewer eyes).

d. Lowers travel demands on teams by adding regional opponents and elimination cross county road trips. Benefit to players over a long season and team scheduling by avoiding open days for cross country travel.

I guess this could be the end to inter league play (not a big loss in this age of TV/Internet and over exposure) and could serve to return more interested in the World Series / All-Star game as teams / leagues don't play face each other during the year.

A NL West? SD, AZ, LAD, LAA, SF, OAK, COLO, SEA paired with

A NL Mid-West? MINN, MILW, CWS, CUBS, STL, KC, TEX, HOU

A AL Mid-East? DET, CLEV, CINN, PITT, MIA, TB, ATL, + expansion (Nashville or Carolina)

A AL East? WASH, BALT, PHIL, NYY, NYM, BOST, TOT, + expansion (Montreal)

The pluses (meaning revenues) seem to outweigh the potential negatives>

I would hate to see the DH in the National League and I understand the pro and con of the arguement

I’m a traditionalist and don’t like the DH either.

However......I’m also a realist and unfortunately it seems that it’s only a matter of time now until it happens.

So if it’s gonna happen I would prefer it happen when it is to the Padres advantage.

Is that now?

I guess you could say it would be with guys like Reyes,Naylor, and Austin Allen as candidates.

Along with a way to possibly keep Mejia’s and  Wil Myers’s bats in the lineup more regularly.

I like the idea of the DH for the starting pitcher, then move to pinch hitters from then on.  If they did that, I'd hope they would expand the rosters to 26

I’ve been as traditional as anyone. I believe in the double switches, pitchers hitting, etc. But I have to say I think MLB needs to adopt 1 set of rules and ways for both leagues. I think they need to do whatever it takes to respark interest in the game. I recently went to a Nationals Marlins game in DC this past summer and man it was by far the most boring game I had ever been to regardless if it was the lowly marlins. A game that has become nothing but strikeouts and homeruns has become a game where there isn’t much anticipation of a stolen base a hit and run, etc. MLB needs to scale back the shift too. At least until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hands require there be at least two players on each side of second base.

LOVE this idea & have posted it on boards in the past.  Key is having 26 Active & that the DH comes out of the game when the SP does:  Makes 1st 1/2 to 2/3 of most games like the AL; will boost offense.  But preserves much more strategic/interesting NL style for last 1/2  to 1/3 of most games with PH & double switches.  It decreases the value/AB's over a full season of a "pure" DH like Nelson Cruz... which should be decreased anyway b/c incapable of playing defensively in field.

2 positive side effects of this over current system:  1) Introduces a strategic element to how/who you utilize as the DH & where they bat in the order.  Different teams might handle differently depending how their team is composed, who the starter is, etc.  2)  Incentivizes teams to have their SP go longer in games, countering the further offense killing "opener" trend that is highly likely to spread & slow games down/ decrease offense further.  No accident this started in the AL where don't have to worry about the P hitting... COULD make it so DH stays in game till whichever happens LAST:  SP out of game, or end of 4th? 5th? inning?
