Andy Green relieved of duties.
Quote from MrPadre19 on October 1, 2019, 1:22 pmI assume he will sit and talk with both Clubs.
It will likely come down to two things.
How soon he believes each will make it to the World Series and of course....$$$$
I'm hoping he will prefer a little less scrutiny for what should be his last gig.
You can't get much more laid back than San Diego...esp compared to Chicago/NY/LA etc.

Quote from fenn68 on October 2, 2019, 6:03 pmListening to one of the talking heads (not sure which one) and he said the Padres were attempting to set up interviews with Showalter and Scioscia.
The current commentary suggest the Padres want ML experience and success plus a “presence” in the clubhouse. Past the time for testing a newbie?
Given Fowler’s recent comments (not really a surprise) beginning to think the hire will be more directed by Fowler and his view of what a manager should be at this time than Preller who may end up just doing the leg work under the parameters set by Fowler.
Mentioned Showalter before ... clearly a success history (and a history of getting fired) ... but won with Machado so have to assume a good relationship there and has a history of taking young teams to the playoffs faster than most expected. Would seem to be a Fowler type. If I remember correctly a total control freak of every detail (such as what players wear) and seems to wear out his welcome with the front office even if he is winning.
If the current commentary holds ... Maddon, Showalter, Scioscia, Girardi, Bochy would seem to be the finalists. You make the call.

Quote from LynchMob on October 2, 2019, 10:05 pmBob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Angels and Padres are the favorites to land former Cubs manager Joe Maddon.
The Angels fired Brad Ausmus on Monday with Andy Green being let go near the end of the regular season by the Padres, and it's not surprising that both have interest in the former Chicago skipper. Maddon of course has a long history with the Angels, having spent 31 years in the organizations as Nightengale notes. It sounds like the 65-year-old will end up picking where he wants to manage, and a return to southern California seems likely.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 8, 2019, 12:29 pmIt is looking more and more likely that Maddon may be destined for ANA, leaving SD looking at other candidates. I read the list is going to be long in the first set of interviews, and Machado just threw his hat in the ring for Showalter. So after first round of interviews, who would your choice be from the following four candidates.
Girardi
Showalter
Scioscia
Barajas

Quote from JasonE135 on October 8, 2019, 12:47 pmMy personal vote would be for Barajas. That is just because I am a homer and we know the players already like him, trust him and respond to him. Other than him probably Showalter. I would never want a former Yankee manager. To me that is a lot like operation "Paperclip" after WW2(where the U.S. gathered former Nazi scientists to work on U.S. projects) I just seriously dislike the culture over there. I have never been a fan of Scioscia.

My only problem with Showalter is why cant he get a team to the World Series. NYY - Showalter managed them 92-95, won the WS 96,98, and 99. AZ - Showalter managed them 98-2000, won the WS in 2001. TEX - Showalter managed them 2003-06, went to the WS in 2010 and 2011. BAL - Showalters best success IMO as a manager, where he got them to the playoffs 3 times with Machado.
So can Showalter get us to the playoff level and then we have to hire "F@$#@^g" Bob Brenly to win the World Series? :-).

We are on the same page on this.
Even if, as suspect, the Padres have a different agenda ... not sure the Padres are #1 on either Showalter’s or Girardi’s preferences ... and other teams seem “interested” in them. Then potentially add PHIL if Kapler get the axe ... whew!
Girardi seems to be leaning Cubs or Mets ... Showalter Mets .... and both would push into the PHIL discussion if it opens up.
Really don’t want Scioscia. Alou withdraws, Beltran (also leaning Mets) no interested in SD, Bochy’s retirement is seeming legit for 2020 ... so Barajas’ odds are on the rise.
Hopefully this sequence does not elevate Ron Washington back into the discussions ... not a fan of his last years with Texas (on and off the field) and, for me, too old.
Not sure any of the less experienced options are a lock to be better than Barajas.

Quote from fenn68 on October 8, 2019, 3:21 pmNo idea if they are getting interviews BUT two more names apparently being discussed are:
1. Mark DeRosa .. former player now on MLBNetwork who has wanted to manage for years and gets hype from his media colleagues.
2. Jayce Tingler ... who? ... field managing experience (and winning) in the minors and the DSL ... part of the Texas structure as a coach ... minor league scout ... player development coordinator first minor leagues then ML field personnel coordinator ... front office experience. Was there when Preller was there.
Hard to see either one fitting the criteria the Padres seek.
A one off thought is that Preller was in Texas when Showalter and Tingler were there ... might they hire Showalter as the manager (fire him in 3 years) and have Tingler in the wings (bench coach) to take over ... his is only 38? If nothing else from is past .. Showalter takes young teams and build them into contenders and then they win with the new manager.

Quote from TatisJr on October 8, 2019, 3:44 pmWith it looking like Maddon to Angels is a done deal, I’d be happy with Washington or Buck. I didn’t think of Buck at all until Fenn brought him up. I never really cared for Buck, but you can’t ignore his success in turning teams around. I remember some years ago hearing on a telecast some analyst say, “Buck, has forgotten more about baseball than most will ever know.” The guy seems to get the most out of his teams. The fact Manny seems to love him so much and want him as the guy does speak volumes. Manny and Buck are quite the odd couple, but there seems to be a lot of respect/admiration between the two. Despite his personal issues, I’ve always heard great things about Ron Washington as a teacher and smart baseball man. I think he would fit in nicely with a young squad. I like Barajas, but I’m not comfortable turning the keys over to him just yet. He seems smart and well liked by players and front office. Maybe he could stick around and be manger in the wings if they hire an older guy like Buck or Washington?
