Fenn, just curious what is it about Maddens character that you don’t like?

Apparently the Pirates May be interested in Omar Vizquel.....who’s managing in the White Sox minor league system.

Shouldn't we be interested in him as well?

I would think with his baseball IQ and respect from players he may be a good choice if we are interested in someone without ML experience.

1:10pm: The Angels have formally announced that Ausmus will not manage the team in 2020.

One more opening .... one more home for Maddon (as rumored ... hmmm) .... one more candidate for the SD job?

IF the Padres don't get a manager with that initial credibility and clubhouse "presence" ... would seem Vizquel should join the mix of candidates.

Cubs may now be the key move before the other dominoes fall. I have heard speculation that Girardi, Loretta, Ross, and, yes, even Bochy are potentially candidates for Cubs' opening.

Not unrealistic to see Maddon with the LAA .... Girardi with the Cubs ... Bochy just sit out 2020 .... that is the big three (name wise) .... so, some challenge for the Padres potentially.

Maddon is reported as planning to manage 3-5 years more .... might he lean toward a team that has a better chance of being a playoff team sooner than later? LAA will have (hopefully healthy) Trout, Otani, Simmons, Upton as a basis while the powerful Houston is losing some key pitching with Verlander just getting older. Plus Moreno will pay the big bucks. Do the Padres really want any manager that may bolt in 3 years?

Girardi ... in some opinions ... is not a good fit for the Padres organization ... too much of a control guy who would not work well with the front office (and they are the ones making the hire).

Bochy .. well he has to do what he feels is right for him and his family and if that is sitting out 2020 ... he has earned that choice.

One wild card is PHIL ... would be a desirable landing spot with their talent, stupid money to spend to become even better, and already in legit playoff contention in a Division that has no slam dunk dominate team going forward. IF the move on from Kapler ... heard both Maddon (from PA) and, yes, Bochy suggested. Makes some sense for two of the "older" candidates with high success profiles opting for a strong team that can more easily make the playoffs the using their last few managing years nursing a developing team.

With Ausmus no out in LAA, for no real reason IMO. You would have to think that he (if he wants to keep managing) would be very interested in SD. Good young kids, some budget money to spend, and some good vets. Plus, we know he likes it in SD. Good fit, he did well in DET IIRC.

Offshore gambling sites have Joe Maddon listed as the favorite for the Padres job. Odd shark currently has it Maddon  +150, Mike Scioscia +300 Mark Loretta +400 Joe Girardi +600 Ron Washington +600 Eric Chavez +800 Rod Barajas +800 Bruce Bochy +1800. Many reporters think it will come down to the Pads and Angels for his services. I’d have to think the Padres job would be the more appealing spot. Astros and A’s aren’t going downhill anytime soon. I really hope they land Maddon. I think he would be perfect for this roster.

Having Scioscia at +300 (second in the odds) sort of hurts credibility .... since he may be the pure opposite of what the Padres organization would want ... he is a control guy and the hiring is by a front office that has shown no tendency to cede control to an old school manager. Odds may be set to generate betting rather than realistic chances of success.

As for Maddon, LAA may be the better choice for HIM. He has said he wants to manage for only 3-5 years ... so to bolster his resume (ego) winning sooner than down the road would be appealing. Houston may not be quickly faltering but Verlander is old and getting older and Cole/Miley are departing ... their pitching may be making them vulnerable soon. Add that Maddon (besides having a home in Long Beach) would get Trout, Otani, Upton, Simmons, plus one of the better prospects in Adell next season. Then add deep pockets from Moreno ... maybe for Cole or one of the other top pitching prospects ... could get to the playoffs a lot sooner than the Padres. Eclipsing TB and Oak for the wild card could be easier than you think even if they don't catch HOUS.

SD is coming from a much deeper hole .. further away with LAD for the Division and much more competitive teams in the mix for the wild card. Basically from Maddon's personal interests ... winning ASAP is very important ... sort of why they if they fire Kapler ... PHIL might be his best move ... talent and "stupid money" .. to run down Atlanta, WASH, and NYM ... not that daunting if they add Cole to the SP.

Got to believe the Padres hire someone who they believe will be around for 5 year minimum (assuming success) to carry the young developing team into the playoffs and continue that success without changing horses mid-stream. No confidence that fits any of the "older" successful managers 64 and older.

Maddon living in Long Beach seems a slam dunk for the Angels, no?

Moreno can go after Cole this winter and have a legitimate chance out west.

If Maddon just wants comfort and familiarity then the Angels job is the one to take. If he’s looking to inherit talent it’s the Padres job and that really isn’t even debatable. The Padres job is the clear number one opening out there in terms of talent and flexibility. Trout and Ohtani are stars, but after that the roster is weak and the farm system doesn’t have much outside Adell. Billy Eppler has been terrible with the amount of money he’s been allowed to spend. He has to be on a piping hot seat. The Angels have virtually zero in terms of pitching. Upton was awful last year and Simmons didn’t look like himself last year either. Verlander showed zero signs of slowing down. Kershaw has declined, Ryu could be on the way out.  Cole is likely gone, but Astros have Whitley and other power arms coming up and a 7 or possibly 8 deep all star like lineup. The A’s and Rays are both young rosters that seem to be on the rise.
