As expected, he LOVES both Washington and Tingler ...
The only insight was the view that (in his previous managerial role) Washington did not want to get bothered by analytics and is basically old school with bunts and hit - runs. He didn’t know if Washington has changed, and if not, how that will play with any front office in this era.
One thought was the Washington may want a bench coach that filters the analytics ... and probably a previous ML manager ... although would not rule out Tingler.
Additionally, would probably want the pitching coach to really handle the staff in game ... not much affinity for that role either. Is that a role that fits Balsley? Difference between “coaching” and in game management.
Basically, Washington really manages through his coaches. So, what does he really bring to the table ... apparently he really gets the players to play to the max for him and gets young players performing at the ML level.
Well not only in baseball but in real life.. The best managers really don't do much..they empower their agm's and people around them to develop and become their best... If a Manager needs to look over every aspect of the game he is not managing he is doing grunt work..

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 17, 2019, 7:30 amSo AJ has said that he prefers a Manager with Major League experience...like Washington, but If I'm not mistaken three of the last four Managers left standing this season all were first time Managers.....right?
Dave Martinez.....Mike Shildt....Aaron Boone ?
With AJ Hinch only have 2 seasons with D Backs before the Astros.
So....just saying if they go with Tingler it's not like its just to save money.....he could still be the "right" guy.

Doubt “saving money” is even part of the hiring decision .... Washington is not going to command a big annual salary ... Maddon took only $4MM / 3 years and he was the “name” (plus less than what he was making in CHI).
Tingler may be the right guy .... but did hear a discussion suggesting a part of the success of the current surviving managers is based in taking over teams that were already poised as contenders (especially Boone and the NYY).
Padres may be a year or two away from that stage unless some of the young prospects rapidly evolve into impact ML players. So, in the Padres case, maybe there is a greater need for a manager that can develop those prospects quickly while also motivating the Machado and Hosmer.
More importantly is the clear desire of Fowler / Siedler to move past the developmental phase and into the contending phase now. With that as a motivation, hard not to go with the proven candidate (Washington) vs. any unproven option (Tingler). Frankly Washington really sounds like a Fowler kind of guy (old school with success). Seems as though Preller would be fine with either ... apparently both have the Texas history with him and good relationships.
Best chance of moving to a contender in 2020-21 ... Washington is the manager.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 17, 2019, 8:23 amI agree, its sounding more like Washington being the guy. With the remaining question of whether or not Tingler is his bench coach.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 17, 2019, 2:37 pmI guess that is workable. Washington I guess is the type of leader that we need, but we need somebody who is up on the new analytics. Tingler could be that guy. I just don't know if he will be willing to take a position other than GM.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 17, 2019, 4:00 pmJon Heyman via twitter and MLBTR is saying that is looking like Tingler is the guy for SD. I am a little confused that so much was made about experience and presence in the dugout, and we go newbie again. Didnt even sound like we brought in the big guns like Girardi, Showalter, etc.
