Does anyone know what the relationship is between Washington and Tingler?

I assume they know each other from their Ranger days?

Could we hire both?

Washington as Manager with Tingler as his right hand man to groom ?

I think MrP has what will be the winning combo IMO.

Unfortunate circumstance with the Angels may have a ripple effect on the managerial situation.

The reports are that a former LAA front office person is cooperating with Federal Officials on the opioid situation with the Angels and the linkage with the death of Tyler Skaggs. Apparently this guy was involved in the opioid distribution with Skaggs but possible other players and front office people MAY BE involved or at least knew of the situation.

If so, might a high profile manager candidate (e.g. Maddon) prefer to take his talents elsewhere? Does any high profile candidate  “gamble” on the outcome of other players / front office personal getting axed when potentially other high profile opportunities exist (e.g. METS, PHILS).

Sad wrinkle but real life consideration.

The Angels have reached a deal with Joe Maddon to be the team’s next manager, Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group reports (Twitter link).  An official announcement from the team is expected soon.  MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported earlier today that Maddon and the Angels were closing in on an agreement, with ESPN.com’s Jesse Rogers adding that the deal is expected to be for three years and in the neighborhood of $12-$15MM.

... not enough to scare Maddon away...

I think Padres Job is between Tingley and Washington... Tingley 2nd Interview today with AJP and Ownership

I tag along on the Washington (3 year contract) with Tingley the "manager in waiting" and #1 bench coach / assistant manager concept if Tingley would want that vs. his current role and the opportunity to pursue other current openings / openings next year. Have to think if the Padres don't contend near term both he and Washington are gone in 3 so for Tingley ... hanging around has a lot of downside.

In their search for an Andy Green replacement, the Padres conducted an interview with Nationals third base coach Bob Henley, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). This is the first we’ve heard of interest in Henley, who has been the Nats’ third base coach since the start of the 2014 season. Notably, Henley has survived two managerial changes in that time, perhaps reflecting an ability to adapt to the differing leadership styles of Matt Williams, Dusty Baker and now Dave Martinez.

==========

Serious candidate ...?

Did hear one discussion that often interviews (from the team's perspective) are more intelligence gathering ... what does some other team / individual think of Padre players or opponent players just as input to winter moves. Also, it may add some insight into the individual for a future Padre role as a coach.

The individually may know that but just getting his name out there as an interviewed candidate may elevate his chance from another team in the future or just get him a pay boost where he is. At a minimum, good interview experience for the future.

Sort of a win-win even if not a serious candidate plus adds some "due diligence" credibility to the process I guess.

Isn't it odd to interview a Coach who's team is still playing in the Playoffs?

No, actually not that unusual ... usually on a travel day if convenient.  Think the CUBS interviewed Espada (Houston) on Monday.

It is looking as though Washington and Tingler are in the finals (maybe no one else) ... with Preller taking them to Fowler and Seidler for the final decision.

Makes some sense Preller offering up a seasoned veteran and a unproven rising star for final debate. If this is a "team decision" ... putting both owners squarely in the middle of the call insures all are on board (and avoids some later scapegoating).

Listened to an interview with the play by play announcer for the Texas Rangers.

As expected, he LOVES both Washington and Tingler ...

The only insight was the view that (in his previous managerial role) Washington did not want to get bothered by analytics and is basically old school with bunts and hit - runs. He didn’t know if Washington has changed, and if not, how that will play with any front office in this era.

One thought was the Washington may want a bench coach that filters the analytics ... and probably a previous ML manager ... although would not rule out Tingler.

Additionally, would probably want the pitching coach to really handle the staff in game ... not much affinity for that role either. Is that a role that fits Balsley? Difference between “coaching” and in game management.

Basically, Washington really manages through his coaches. So, what does he really bring to the table ... apparently he really gets the players to play to the max for him and gets young players performing at the ML level.
