30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters
Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2020, 2:13 pmQuote from Brian Connelly on July 23, 2020, 1:42 pmOther teams are making more Additions (Selections) & Subtractions (DFA's) than Padres when finalizing their O.D. rosters, presumably due to tighter 40-man rosters. With our 40 & 60 man rosters wide open now, I would absolutely expect the Pads to take advantage & be in on some decent intriguing depth arms via Waiver or minor "PTBNL" type trade. Anyone picked up would be in the 60-man pool & 40-man roster, not the active roster. Insurance esp for 1st half of season before rosters pare down.
Biggest "names" probably Hunter Wood from Cleveland & Carson Fulmer from White Sox, but they might be out of options.
I like better:
- Gossett from A's - 2nd rd pick, TJ surg in 2018, "SP", 1 option left
- S. Gonsalves from Mets - LH, "SP", 4th rd pick, 1 or 2 options left?
- former Padre Robert Stock - 2 options remaining. Big FB, no control
Thinking along the same lines ...
Going with an out of options guy is probably not going to work unless Preller sees him as better than whomever he projects being on the 26 man roster in 30 days. Or just better than the 27-30 options then just dump the pick-up ... basically a rental for 30 days.
On the other had ... taking a flyer on a player with options seems possible (unless there are trade competitors jacking up the price beyond the value to the Padres).

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2020, 2:32 pmGossett seems like a Preller guy coming of TJ ... low 90s FB with high spin rate .... 27 RHSP. Worth a look (at the right price) when there is space on the rosters.
Gonsalves has some appeal as a LHP ... 26 ... elbow injury in 2019 kept him IL / rehab for most the season. Another roll the dice pick-up for the right price.
Maybe in 2020 but having the coaches check them out in 2020 might uncover some potential for 2021.

Quote from Ben Davey on July 23, 2020, 9:13 pmI would think that Carson Fulmer is also a Preller/Balsey guy. Tremendous stuff, cant find home plate. Worth a flyer even though I believe he is out of options.
The more I think about it, the less I think Gore/Patino even make their debut this year. If there are injuries, good chance you see Cal, Morejon, and Baez first. MTPGA and others have mentioned the idea of using Patino out of the pen, and I could see that if our bullpen wasnt already so deep.

He is out of options. A couple of years ago when the Padres had major holes in their pitching staff he would have been a legit target for Preller ... bit in 2020 with a strong staff and a 60 games season .... can't really bump anyone for him and take the risk of him blowing a game or two.
On Gore / Patino ...never really understood the idea that they should make the opening day roster or they should be called up early. Yes, agree they are elite prospects who will be critical for the future Padres but in July, 2020 they still are just projection. Two 21 year olds who have just barely pitched innings in AA would be big risks if the Padres want to win in 2020 vs. the experienced "incumbents" .... even if we are frustrated with some of the "incumbents". Yes, Gore / Patino actually could be worse than the "incumbents" in 2020 and there is little time in a 60 game season to "nurse" them along when they struggle as rookies.
If there are a lot of injuries or if the Padres fall out of contention ... might see Gore / Patino get the call. What we will have trouble evaluating is how they look pitching at the alternate site and how much the get stretched out to warrant the call-up .... apparently they did not get a ton of work at Summer Camp and the work at the alternate site is an unknown.
2020 is different than 2019 based on team expectations of contending (even more so with 8 playoff slots) ... but Padres did not have any issue starting the season with Paddack and Tatis saying they were the best options ... maybe the Padres are telling us that Gore / Patino right now are not their best options.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 24, 2020, 9:46 amFulmer had all the bells and whistles coming out of Vanderbilt, but could not find the strike zone consistently. It's possible that he could be claimed and Bednar sent down. That would give them a week or so to evaluate his probability of being a productive piece of the bull-pen sooner than later. If not, then I believe you could just release him and bring Bednar back up. If Rothschild says "no", and he's seen Fulmer in the past, then not worth claiming. I think, it then may be possible to sign him to a minor league contract if he shows some hope of becoming more than a thrower.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2020, 10:00 amI guess I would worry that the CWS .. roughly in the same ascension as the Padres (but arguably a lesser pitching staff) ... would DFA him at this point when they are still at an expanded 30 man roster.
Would think some truly bad team (like Baltimore) would put a claim in to test the waters and if he does clear waivers don't think he has enough MiL service to be a FA.
Probably not a fit for the 2020 Padres.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2020, 5:04 pmPadres infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo, who tested positive for the coronavirus July 8, has been cleared to return, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Mateo worked out Friday, per Acee, though he’ll begin the season on the COVID-19 injured list. It’s unknown when he’ll be ready to make his 2020 debut.
=======
sounds from that the the Padres have some leeway in bring him back from the IL list even if cleared. could be weeks since he missed months but being out of options will at some point cause an issue as the 30 is moved down to 26.

Good call. Detroit claimed him.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 25, 2020, 4:29 pmRed Sox claim Gonsalves from Mets.
Someone remind me; they got rid of AL/NL with waiver claims, didn't they? Now it's just strictly by last year's record, so Pads #8?
