30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters
Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2020, 8:34 amPadres website has the Padres putting Mateo, Castillo, and Wingenter officially on the IL.
Additionally, Baez was reassigned to the alternative site.
Still one more to remove from the active roster to hit 30 by my count (note Morejon and Reyes were previously optioned). Croneworth looks to have made the 30 (with Mateo out). Barring a last minute surprise the last move should be Torrens v Olivares v Naylor.

The Mets have struck minor-league deals with outfielder Juan Lagares and infielder Brian Dozier, according to reports from Deesha Thosar of the New York Post (Twitter link) and MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Both will join the 60-man player pool.
LOL. I guess so. AND the Mets just released Gordon Beckham, who had latched on with them after Pads cut him during 1st training camp.

Guys previously optioned (Olivares, Morejon, G. Reyes) would technically be "recalled" if make O.D.
So I have for potential P spots #15 - 17: Morejon, Perdomo, Bednar, G. Reyes, Gore, Patino. At least 1 a lock.
HAVE to have a bench CF capable OF. Along with Myers' balky quad, think it makes Olivares a lock.
So in my mind for position player/bench spots #13-15: Torrens, Cronenworth, & Naylor. At least 1 a lock. With 3 starting INF very SS capable, I don't have JC as a lock.
I'll go on record one last time that I'm not at all a fan of 17 P's... too far away from "real" baseball, and a situation is going to come up in those 15 games multiple times where you wish you had a bench option to do SOMEthing. Also, you can "roll up" Gore or Patino in 7 days when they'll be under 1.000 year MLB service time (i.e. exchange the 15-16th arm). If I had to choose last man I'd take Torrens over a P or JC.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 23, 2020, 9:50 amMy guess is that Bednar goes down, leaving them with 15 pitchers and 15 position players to start the season. With your 3 top pitchers going the first 3 days, expect to need more of a bench than additional arms. Can adjust after the Diamondback series. Agree that Torrens, Cronenworth and Naylor all make the opening day 30 man squad.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 23, 2020, 9:52 amWell, just after I posted this saw they kept Bednar over Torrens. We'll see how restrictive this is to the bench shortly.

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2020, 10:03 amFor today ... the Padres are actually at 30 by the 9 AM deadline (I had forgot Olivares had been optioned in March).
14 position players .... 16 pitchers. My guess is that before tomorrow's game Olivares is "called-up" and either Torrens (likely) or Naylor is optioned.
Setting up for the first 15 days to have Morejon, Baez, and Reyes inactive and only one position player Torrens. All the other 40 man options are IL.
The first cut to 28 will probably be determined by how the team (and the individual players) are performing (or health). Given the long run of consecutive games in July-early Aug, probably the first cut is a position player and a pitcher to preserve two "extra" pitchers during high use period. (note: Mateo is still a wild card to be activated with no options ... could force a different pitcher / position player mix).
In 30 days probably down to the "normal" 13 position players and 13 pitchers ... probably (baring injury) the last two pitchers off are Perdomo and either Lucchesi or Quantrill .... most of the others can't be optioned or are are clearly superior. If they go with 14 pitchers for flexibility ... then 12 position players (9 starters including DH, 1 reserve catcher, only two bench options with one being Mateo who is out of options) .... not likely to work well.
=======
Just hard to see ... early in the season ... the Padres adding any non-roster player to the active roster baring a string of major injuries and creating a ripple effect of optioning / releasing one of the current players. IF the Padres fall out of contention ... then yes.

Don't see an issue with the bench. Looks at though they are ... for now ... going with Grisham full-time in CF and Profar full-time at 2B with a split at catcher with Hedges / Mejia. Assume France is the DH ... still have a flexible bench of Olivares / Naylor (L) in the OF and Cronenworth (L) / Garcia (L) in the INF. If someone else DHs ... France can fill 3B/1B/2B/reserve catcher. Probably not a lot of PH projected.
Basically they are keeping one more position player than "normal" and now have the DH with a line-up that ... to start the season ... is not going to have platooning. Not sure that 14th position player will see the light of game time in those first two weeks.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 23, 2020, 1:42 pmOther teams are making more Additions (Selections) & Subtractions (DFA's) than Padres when finalizing their O.D. rosters, presumably due to tighter 40-man rosters. With our 40 & 60 man rosters wide open now, I would absolutely expect the Pads to take advantage & be in on some decent intriguing depth arms via Waiver or minor "PTBNL" type trade. Anyone picked up would be in the 60-man pool & 40-man roster, not the active roster. Insurance esp for 1st half of season before rosters pare down.
Biggest "names" probably Hunter Wood from Cleveland & Carson Fulmer from White Sox, but they might be out of options.
I like better:
- Gossett from A's - 2nd rd pick, TJ surg in 2018, "SP", 1 option left
- S. Gonsalves from Mets - LH, "SP", 4th rd pick, 1 or 2 options left?
- former Padre Robert Stock - 2 options remaining. Big FB, no control
