Someone remind me; they got rid of AL/NL with waiver claims, didn't they? Now it's just strictly by last year's record, so Pads #8?
That is the way I understand it. Apparently the Padres did not want Gonsalves.

Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2020, 6:02 pmBoth Fulmer and Gonsalves were claimed and awarded to new teams. Both were put on waivers on the 23rd. In both cases, apparently only 1 team put in a claim or if more than one the others did not want to make a trade.
Still out there is Gossett (has a minor league option coming off TJ) ... put on waivers the same day as the others but no word. Waiving team has 10 days to make a deal with any club that made a claim in the first 72 hour window. Maybe that suggests that multiple clubs put in claims and are discussing a deal. Padres?
If I have this right ... since the season started ... the trade piece has to from the “60” and not PTNL I guess. Not sure who the Padres would give up for a 27 year old coming off TJ.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2020, 2:25 pm3 player “taxi squad” named for the SF series:
- Torrens ... expected since a catcher is a requirement
- Eickhoff ... RHP ... non-roster
- Camarena ... LHP ... non-roster
Must be some logic but adding two veteran non-roster pitchers over Morejon, Baez, Reyes seems unexpected.
Maybe they want the younger players to continue to work at the alternate site .... maybe if COVID strikes the traveling squad they prefer Eickhoff and Camarena to be at risk.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 27, 2020, 5:21 pmTorrens was a requirement and I think you are right about the COVID risk as the reason they were brought up. We shouldn't need them in SF if we get what expect from Davies, Paddack and Lamet. Can come back with Strahm and Johnson after Davies and Hill and Guerra look like they have rubber arms to go if necessary. We should be okay by Wednesday to support Paddack and Lamet with some of our more experienced bullpen arms. Big series - need to get 2.

Totally predictable. Remember, these "SP's" since now have to be ready for a next/same day callup won't be able to get much pitching work in. Guessing they blow off steam with a short bullpen on alternate days.
Keeps: Gore, Patino, Morejon, & Baez in SD making "starts" on a regular schedule to get as much work as possible, build IP, and just "develop" as much as can in the weird situation.
My guess is we'll see the taxi squad be more elite P's when the roster size is down to 26.

Gossett was straight released. Haven't heard about Robert Stock yet. Even if you're right about trades "having" to come from the 60-man, Pads could just add anyone in their system to that list as a formality for the express purpose of trading them. Don't think there's a rule against that. Was thinking just waiver claims here, but if anyone feels "OK" with our depth, imagine it with 3, 5, 7 or more guys down with COVID....

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2020, 6:18 amStock claimed by Boston.
Surprised no team claimed Gossett at least as a “look see” exercise given most of the other “fringe” pitchers put on waivers are getting claimed. Maybe the scouting from last year / spring training was enough to judge his return from TJ.
===
Foltynewicz just got DFA by Atlanta ... had an all-star 2018 but slid back a bit in 2019 ... reportedly he was only around 90 MPH this year after a career in the mid-90s.
Out of minor league options so not really a fit for the Padres.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2020, 5:15 pmInteresting “speculation” about ATL’s surprising DFA of Foltynewicz at his point ... think control manipulation.
Apparently in a couple of days he would achieve 5 years of ML service and could decline a minor league assignment if he cleared waivers. So, if he clears waivers now ... he remains under control of ATL (and non-roster) for next year.
He has a $6MM contract ... so IF another team claims him they get his contract (pro rated remainder) at a point where they can’t option him and he is not pitching well. Atlanta saves money.
Sort of a win-win-win for ATL ... drop in 2020 a currently ineffective pitcher in a playoff run .... retain control of an “all-star in 2018” with rebound potential for 2021 .... or lose him and save money. Smart?

Quote from Randy Manese on July 29, 2020, 11:30 amLooking at the upcoming cut to 28 on August 8, one of the key decisions going forward is Naylor. Naylor seems lost right now and what I'd do to get another LH hitter into the line-up, is send Naylor down now (or after the next two games if he fails to hit RH's Cueto and Gausman) and bring up Torrens. This will allow Padres to put Mejia either at DH or in the OF and also let us see what Torrens can do. Naylor needs to get his swing back and his mind focussed. Could say the same thing about Machado, but his problem seems to be timing and a more uppercut swing than he used to have. Bat has been a little slow. We need more competitive ABs against RHPs besides Grisham, Hosmer and Profar. Don't have any problem occasionally starting Garcia or even Cronenworth, as both seem to have the plate discipline that I haven't seen from Naylor so far. On or before 8 August if Naylor shows well he can either stay (if he wasn't sent down) or brought up, if he has improved in the time at the alternate training site.

Looks as though ATL played this right .... Foltynewicz cleared waivers and was assigned to the minors and will control him for a couple more years hoping for a rebound.
Apparently the national media mis-read the tea leaves since the were sure some team (or multiple teams) would claim him. I guess the $2+MM he is due this year was just too much.
