2023 offseason

PreviousPage 371 of 376Next

It's all fake news to try to get fans upset with either Machado or the Padres.  Machado's agent and Preller are talking all the time and I'm sure neither one is tipping off anyone on what their discussions have been in terms of total dollars or length of contract.  Not worried about the Padres-Machado relationship going forward this season, with or without an extension before opening day.

These “reports” often are second hand pass offs from more speculation than fact.

Given the Padres history of keeping everything close to the vest … doubt they are leaking anything except that they are in negotiation. Machado’s agent (or someone in that sphere) could be leaking the low side … not necessarily for this negotiation but to keep a relatonship going with the reporter. Or someone just could be speculating.

Not a worry at this point … Padres just set an initial low offer (and most do in negotiaton) and will go up while Machado’s side stats with the high side to set “limits” … then start moving dollars, years, opt outs, vesting, incentives, “perks” around to reach a settlement. Both sides want negotiation flexibility.

No slam dunk this will get done since Machado (if he has a MVP type season) in this market has a legit case for a 10 year / $350MM deal and that COULD cross the Padre line given the other commitments coupled with an Ohtani run and runs that the Korean / Japanese FA next winter.

With Andrus signing with the White Sox … Profar becomes the far and away most productive FA still unsigned based on 2022 stats. Kind of feeling sorry for him … a good teammate / good guy who (along with Boras) made a bad call in negotiations.

Guessing it was the stance in negotiations that was this issue (over reached) … the opt out seemed right. Opted out of $7.5MM bot got a $1MM buyout, so really only needed $6.5MM/1 year to break even … really thought he could easily top that. If the reports were valid he was seeking $24MM/3 years, too much, and apparently did not come down soon enough until the seats were taken / money tapped out.

Note that Voit has yet to sign.

At this point, Profar would be the ultimate insurance policy since he would have no starting role if he signed with the Padres.  Big problem is it looks like the Padres want to stay below that second tier of CBT, which means they would have to dump salary to give Profar anywhere close to what he was making last season.  The one guy that would fit on such a move is Pomeranz but doubt there are many takers for an aging, injured pitcher who will be a free agent next year.  So unless Preller gets really really creative with bonus payments and opt outs, somewhat like Wacha's contract, don't see him returning to the Padres.

You have to feel for him because we know he loved his Padres' teammates and would be another great clubhouse presence besides being the Swiss-knife player that would be valuable during a very long season.

Yup it was always Profar 1st and when he didn't come down in price it became Carpenter ..after that Profar fell behind SP as a priority and Wacha signing pretty much ended (99%) the pursuit of Profar.. if Profar had opted in I don't think Carpenter is a Padres..and Profar walked from a $7.5 23 and team option of $10mil in 2024.. which 💯 gets picked up with Profar pitting up 2+ WAR.. so with the buyout he needs 2/$16.5 in my view to "break even" its looking more and more like 1/$5 at best..

BTW I wouldn't mind Voit on a Milb deal at all with like a Severino $1.95 mlb 26 deal.. if Carp or Cruz (or other) misses a month or 3 Voit can come in and provide big Pop off the bench.. also the type, even with everyone healthy that makes some sense in a post season roster as that PH that can do Big damage with one swing in late and close situations

I think Profar just isn't viewed as a viable defensive option in the infield around the league anymore. His throwing issues never went away and he was strictly a left fielder for us last year. I think most teams would prefer someone who closer fits the traditional offensive profile in LF. Profar has been up and down offensively in his career and even at his best is only slightly above average. He's a serviceable option, but not someone anyone is looking to make a significant commitment to in LF.

Heyman says the Padres had Ken Giles in to throw a bullpen at the complex today.

Could be yet another depth piece to a really stacked bullpen.  Minor league deal with an invitation to spring training?

There are still lots of interesting names out there looking for a home on the reliever market. Whether it's due to injury, poor recent performance or some other reason you've got guys like Ken Giles, Zack Britton, Trevor Rosenthal, Corey Knebel, Archie Bradley, Brad Hand, Will Smith, Jose Alvarez and others still out there. Even a team with a seemingly full pen like the Padres might be able to find a bargain with a little luck.
