We're finalizing an 11 year 350m extension with Manny according to Jeff Passan.

Now this is good news.

Woke up to this news... Awesome!

LFG!!!

Question is do they try and get Soto next or is that extension going to be pending an Ohtani signing?

Also the Manny deal “only” adds another 1.8 mil to the luxury tax at 31.8 mil aav

Think Soto will be a lot more difficult than Manny given the Boras factor and his short spell in SD. 2023 will be critical for both sides in planning the future.

Clearly the Ohtani issue will be in play prior to having to commit on the Soto plan.

Ohtani should cost more given the status as a pitcher / DH but he is older, then again he has more potential revenue impact given the Japan market and frankly a better US recognition factor.

Not likely signing both and I would push hard for Ohtani next winter and have both in 2024 … then let Soto walk.

It seems like what most of us were thinking concerning the amount and years.  He was going to make 30M anyway, so by spreading this over this year plus 10 more the impact on the AAV is less than it could have been yet still gets him paid like his contemporaries.  Curious to see whether most of that money is up front (1st 5 years of new contract) like Darvish.  Some of these guys might getting extensions (including non-Padres) into their 40's might just retire rather than hurt their HOF chances if they think they have a chance to get in.  Manny, like so many other Padres, keeps himself in really good shape and has proven extremely durable so he might make it to 41 like Nellie!

IF the Padres want to be under in 2023 … probably puts Garcia on the bubble … Pomeranz if he looks healthy … or IF Pomeranz looks healthy maybe Hader. Can’t trade any of the FA signings until Jun 15 (I think) and not sure who else makes the $1.8MM cut that they would really want to trade. At least there is an apparent surplus in the pen.

Then again, they just might not care.

Moving Pomeranz is the only real option if they want to get under 273m. With the incentives built into the deals for Martinez, Lugo, Carpenter and Wacha it's going to take a pretty big sum. We'll see what happens, but I'm starting to think it's no longer a concern.
