2023 offseason
Quote from 3fingersplit on October 24, 2022, 7:08 pmI have to laugh.....I say it every year....do not trade away young pitchers and yet we do.....what would this rotation look like with Fried and Gore in it....oh thats right....we drafted em and then traded them away.
Soto as a one off trade...I get that but this garbage of 3-4 and 5 for one is pure insanity and makes the Padres a franchise that will NEVER contend every year....how could they when you trade away the entire farm system?
I get it....take a page out of the Rams playbook mentality...screw the draft picks/minor league players....mortgage the future for now.

In my mind I would love for them to find a legit on-base guy for lead off and sit the three at 2-3-4 then sign Bell for #5 and trade for Murphy at #6 with Croney #7 and Kim #8 the Profar #9.
Profar walks, and we let him go. Then we take that money and use it towards getting the best OBP FA guy availalble, LFer Benintendi. We go Benintendi-LF, Tatis-CF, and Soto-RF. Resign Bell. Trade for Murphy and Seth Brown.
Line up could go Benintendi, Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell-DH, Murphy, Brown, Crone, Kim.

Our rotation would look about the same. Except instead of Clevinger, it would have been Fried that got lit up by PHI as well. And Gore who couldnt make 100 innings this year, had a 4.5 ERA, and is probably 10 pitches away from TJ surgery, would not have been on the playoff roster anyway.
90% of the prospects traded away have been scrubs since.
Prospects are cool, parades are cooler.

For a team that trades away prospects for Now help.. we sure had a lot of rookies ..maybe the most by a wide margin contributing to 2022 (For NL playoff teams)
Suarez/Knher/Kerr/Wilson/Gore/Campy/Azocar/Rosario/Batten/CJ... Only Cleveland had more..... not all keepers ..not all kept .. But sure looks like Azocar/Wilson/Campy and Rosario will be here or used to improve the MLB team in 23..and yes I know Suarez is a 31 yr old rookie..but so was Joey Meneses *Nats

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 24, 2022, 8:55 pmThe all thrift 2023 lineup as in no major position player/DH singing
1B Crone
2B Tatis Jr
SS Kim
3B Machado
LF Profar
CF Grish
RF Soto
DH Dixon
C Nola
Bench-- Azocar CF/OF.. Campy DH/C.. Rosario 2B/3B/SS..Waiver FA ..in house minor leaguers
Crone is > Drury/Bell/Myers (2022 as Padres) ..Tatis improves 2B (over Crone +20/30 HRs.. and +200 OPS or more points..the rest of the lineup is the same except DH where all Dixon has to do is hit .715 OPS to be > 2022 DH spot for us..
This alone = much better offense in 2023 with full yr Soto.... and FTJ back.. also would think Jake bounce back to near .800 OPS level likely.. and if Dixon indeed more like 2022 minor league player of the yr and less like Detroit's rook a fee yrs back .. we could be terrific
Sure adding a BAT at 1B/DH and moving away from Grish or improving Frontline C makes us even greater ..BUT what we got coming back + FTJ alone puts us in a pretty special situation.. and then if someone not quite cutting it or Othani becomes a possibility at Deadline..then get the $$ (roughly $12 mil pro rated) to add on the offensive side of the ball..
Concentrate on SP in FA..

That OF trio didnt work in the playoffs this year, why on Earth would you not improve it if you easily could. If Profar doesnt want to be a Padre at his current contract, let him go pound sand. Tatis is NOT going to play 2B. If he is on the dirt, its at SS.
Tatis needs to stick his tail between his legs, and come back and embrace the OF, it makes the team better.

Quote from fenn68 on October 25, 2022, 3:33 amWonder how the Padres’ strategy changes if Profar, Suarez, and Martinez opt out? At various points I have seen commentary suggesting that opt outs are likely for all three.
Considering that Suarez and Martinez were key bullpen arms (at what turned out to be bargain prices) … then add the departures of Clevinger and Manaea and the returning pitching will be really be lacking.
With money targeted for quality SP and one or two bats … how much of that be drained if they need to pay up to keep Suarez / Martinez or go on the FA market to get equivalent production? If the Padres were non-contenders …might go with the idea that they can develop / find good RP on the cheap but as a playoff team wanting to repeat that is a big gamble. Does back-filling RP result in lesser adds for SP and offense?
Same logic on Profar … opt out and let him walk results would put them into the position of replacing him while trying to add a 1B and DH/bench upgrade … with the four pitching holes.
IF the Padres want to contend again (remember they just barely make the playoffs) … filling maybe six holes with upgrades will be just a challenge to find FA who will sign with the Padres and expect a major increase in payroll. Money is not unlimited.
Also, as a contender, relying on Morejon, Groome, Dixon and other internals is a risk too far.
Could be an interesting process of priority setting by Preller and re-setting since the FA are being pursued by others and will not wait for the Padres to make the compelling offer … targets could be gone while the Padres purse their top priorities. Others (usually the agents) just like to drag signing out to try to squeeze out the max offer.

Not the point I was making.... basically saying we have a playoff caliber team without an add.. BUT yes we need to get better

Tatis replaces Profar...so to me that is a Huge upgrade....
Holes on Offense still DH and 1B..with or without Profar.. Profar does make us re-alocate funds $$ elsewhere so I view his Departure as a +
Martinez and Suarez on the other hand are close to "Must" keeps

Quote from fenn68 on October 25, 2022, 7:02 amThis point on Profar … like him or not … he delivered a 2.5 WAR and with him around and Tatis returning the Padres still are seeking another impact bat to fill out 9 line-up slots. Without him they need to replace him and his 2.5 WAR (and that is not easy on the FA market at a comparable cost) while at the same time trying to add that 9th bat.
Adding two “starter” bats … while filling the pitching holes … is not an easy task (and expensive). Can’t make a player sign with the Padres and most likely go to the highest bidder and if they are reliable and good … a lot of competitors.
Plus for those of us that see Grisham as issue (offensively) … not enthused about him remaining in the line-up (even if low cost with plus defense).
With three opt out need to add 2 position players - 2 SP - 2 RP at equal productivity at a minimum … a large task and the return of Tatis’ bat does not cover those holes.
Back to my original point … Preller will have to agile if his priorities are not falling in line on his time line as FA sign elsewhere or just drag out the process … can’t write off anyone.
