2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on October 25, 2022, 8:13 amTo carry over an idea from another thread, Fenn and I were discussing the possibility of a true base stealer at the top of the line up. My suggestion was Jon Berti from MIA. He is a soon to be 33 year old multi position guy that stole 41 bases this season to lead MLB. He can play 3B, 2B, LF, and CF. MLBTR estimates his 1st year of arb will be at $2.4M, the same as Grisham I believe. MIA is looking for a true CFer, would a Grish/Berti trade straight up work for both teams? In that scenario, Tatis could take CF, Berti-LF, and keep Soto in RF. Or do we keep Grish, and see if a Rosario or Kerr piece would interest MIA. And then you could look at Berti-LF, Grisham-CF, and Soto-RF. Then your INF could be Machado, Tatis, Kim-2B, and Crone at 1B. Resign Bell for DH, and then evaluate if Murphy would be worth adding at that time.
Berti, Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Murphy, Crone, Kim, Grish should keep opposing pitchers on their heels.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 25, 2022, 8:39 amWith the new rules in 2023 2 pick off moves limits etc.. I do feel we need pressure a top of the lineup..is that FTJ at #1..or FTJ/Manny/Soto 2 3 4.. and Benintendi #1.. Berti is a great #9 which is how I would use him.. Berti/FTJ flippi g the lineup would be awesome.. Nimmo (I'd stay away from .not a history of SB and coming off a 5 WAR career yr is going to = 5/100 or more and not sure his health history warrants that).. as for Profar dude is slower than molasses which is shocking to me and if he is playing regularly is better in the 7/8 Hole.. Bottomline we need better consistent production from 1 4 and 7 8 9 in 2023... FTJ affects that by simply being in one of the spots.. But at least one other Bat (even a cheapish David Peralta type) needs to be added to stretch 7 8 9 to being a + and not a most of the time Black Hole....
Looking at an Exodus of Johnson /Martinez/Suarez/Stanmen in BP..(we won't lose both Martinez/Suarez but IF)
CL Hader- for 162 a huge + over 2022 start without a CL
BP Garcia
BP Wilson
BP Morejon
BP Hill
BP Cristmat
BP Castillo
BP Lopez/Lugo/Cosgrove/etc..
BP would be a little young after Hader/Hill/Garcia ..But Martinez and Suarez in essence were BP rooks (Suarez 💯/Martinez re-vamped)..
Also INJURY returns POMZ and ADAMS would be HUGE ++ but are ?? Right now
Bottomline I think we can survive losing One of Martinez/Suarez..But ideally Martinez comes back as 5th SP and Suarez as 8th man..
SP
1- Yu
2- Snell
3- Musgrove
4- TBD
5- TBD
6. Groome/Wethers/Knher/Waldron/Avila

I can live with 1. FTJ SS. 2. SOTO RF. 3. MANNY 3B.. 4. JOC LF..5. CRONE 1B.. 6.MURPHY C..7.DRURY DH. 8. GRISH CF. 9. KIM 2B (VS RHP)
VS LHP Kim and Murphy move up..Jake down..Joc gets replaced Dixon/Azocar and drop to 9th
Bench - Nola C, Dixon, Azocar, Rosario

I dont like Crones bat at 1B, want more thump. And I think that they sign Bell over Drury. Bell's bat probably plays better in Petco than Drurys and Bell is a SH, so gives another LH bat v RHP. Also, I think Drury gets more FA attention than Bell.

Quote from 3fingersplit on October 25, 2022, 10:35 amBasic blueprint has always been....strong up the middle and power on the corners
3B- Covered, RF Covered, 1B...??? and LF- Tatis
SS-Covered, 2B- Covered, CF - Grisham...Defense, Catcher - Could be better
Pitching Staff - 60/40

I think Bell is going to get 5/75 ..and Drury more like 4/30 if that.. Drury gives us a HUGE edge vs LHP... and he is ok vs RHP
Bottomline we need to build a team knowing what the plan is for FTJ..with enough flex to cover opening day to 4/20 without shitting the bed.. if the plan is FTJ in the IF .. then Rosario can get playing time (very much like CJ did) thru 4/20.if he is racking u find playing time for him beyond ..if like CJ he has a moment or 2 but struggles u send him back down to AAA or sit him in the bench and use him to give folks off days...
If however the plan is FTJ in the OF and at CF ..then Grish has to go.. he can fetch a good return and is too good to be Azocar 2.0 in 2023..would rather continue using Azocar as 4th..and dealing Grish (if he wins 2nd GG would be a very valuable commodity to a team like Mets *if they lose Nimmo..or Marlins who need a CF since like 2018.. could a 1B Vientos to SDP for Grish work for both (Mets/Padres) or a 3 specs from Marlins which can be flipped for a Murphy type C upgrade
Fun time to speculate..and I find myself influenced by AJP.. looking at everything and anything from Independance leagues to Korea and back to the MLB for answers/pieces.. hell I was trying to find 1B who could be had in Rule V this morning.
😆 🤣 😂

Quote from fenn68 on October 25, 2022, 10:38 amIf they sign Bell (good chance they make a major effort) his bat will lengthen the batting order either at 1B (bad defense) or DH ... that will lessen the pressure on adding another major bat. That in-turn will give more options in getting a more versatile (but maybe not big bat) for that 9th hitter and cover potentially Grisham in CF.
From a career perspective is if far superior offensively than Drury (and most of the FA) plus his profile is more a line drive hitter with power than a big fly ball hitter ... should work better at PETCO. Plus he is a good OBP guy.
Can fund half of his expected salary by letting Profar go ... that should relegate Tatis to LF with holding on to Grisham in CF. Then a lot more flexibility on getting a lower cost 1B/DH type to fill out the line-up.
Tatis - Soto - Machado - Bell is a strong core backed up by Cronenworth - Kim - Nola for the top 7 is playoff quality. Grisham and whomever fills the 9 slot are important but maybe not critical allowing for the rest of the major monies to be deployed on pitching.
At his point, hard to size Bell's price tag since he will likely be viewed as a plus hitting DH by most clubs. His last arb was at $10MM ... so a decent price tag should be there. Still hitters are always in demand. Wild guess is a $13MM AAV over 3 years (maybe 4). He is young enough to warrant the length and he would cover a multi-year need by the Padres in the 1B/DH category.
Since he is here ... Bell may be the first domino to fall after the opt out guy make their calls and if signs or does not sign will set up Preller's moves going forward.

Yup and without the shift at least 20 more hits to the right side for the Big man in 2023.. Lefty bats are even more valuable with the shift gone.. and Bell's Switch hitting is a ++.. I like what I saw from Dixon at the plate..working counts going oppo etc..his sample size (both career and 2022) too small to draw much from it.. But maybe he is "that Guy" like Drury/Meneses/Thompson that comes out of nowhere to produce big in 2023

He could still be resigned 1yr $1mil minor league or something with a ST invite.. Really not a bad insurance bat at AAA if he can't find employment elsewhere..
