2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on February 14, 2023, 11:25 amRemember that the new Darvish contract’s lower AAV has given the Padres some wiggle room before the next threshold … maybe near $6-7 MM and we know Preller can be creative in his contract to keep the Padres under. Maybe a higher 2023 with a lower 2024 (with player opt out)?
Guessing Rosario to 60 day IL doe RHH roster slot.
Remember trading Crismatt, Morejon, and the like doesn’t crate match additional payroll space since the are at or near minimum.
On Pomeranz’s the big IF is health … given what some of the pitchers have been signing for this year he would have a minor market by the Padres either eating some of the salary (still making room under the threshold) or tying a prospect to Pomeranz’s … really ask of nothing in return.
More of a direct issue will be who he pushes off the 26 man roster when the season starts … no even less room for the no option candidates. Maybe not a money issue just a status issue.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 14, 2023, 11:39 amOnly 31 years old so I'm sure he's looking for multiple years....but with the prior three years(to 2022) being lackluster.... no takers.
Lasted this long cause which Wacha are you getting?
I would expect a low first year with opt outs for the player or raise for number of starts or something else creative.
Here's hoping we get the 2022 version

I will be very interesting on the contract design to keep the AAV down … maybe not a cash issue.
Even though he had not signed because of his apparent contract demands … most likely had a number if the “interest”. So, Preller would have to put an appealing deal on the table … I would guess a multi-year deal with a decent 2023 followed by lower subsequent year(s) with opt outs pushing the AAV down like with Darvish.
Wacha at $8MM+ in 2023 would seem fair for a #4 SP with an expected ERA in the 4’s given what they are paying Martinez and Lugo and cheap considering what some teams are paying Clevinger / Manaea.

Quote from fenn68 on February 14, 2023, 12:05 pmApparently Melvin and Soto have agreed on Soto being in LF … so expect Tatis in RF. That seems like the best deployment defensively given Tatis’s arm and speed in a big RF at PETCO.
Also the 6 man rotation seems locked in to start the season.

To me its looking like the following locks.
OF of (4) Soto-LF, Grisham/Engel-CF, Tatis-RF. (4) INF of Machado-3B, Bogaerts-SS, Kim-2B, Crone-1B. (1) C Nola. (3) Bench/DH options of Carpenter, Cruz, Campusano. For a total of 12 position players. Leaving one spot battle between Batten, Dixon, Schrock, Dahl, etc.
(6) SPs Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Wacha, Martinez, Lugo. (5) RP locks of Hader, Suarez, Garcia, Hill, Wilson. Leaving a ST battle for the last two spots between Castillo, Lopez, Pomeranz, Crismatt, and a few others. Really pulling for Lopez, seems like a big arm.
It would appear that SD really now only has two ST battles going on now at this point. One for the final bench spot (after the return of Tatis), and two bull pen spots, that IF healthy, Pomeranz knocks it down to one.
IMO, it would be best for both Azocar, Morejon, Weathers, Groome, Honeywell, Tehran to all start at some level in MiL for either insurance purposes in the case of Tehran and Honeywell. Or in the case of Morejon, Weathers, Groome, Azocar to get everyday ABs or regular starts and hone in their skills. Of course some of it depends on out clauses for some of the MiL invite guys.
This team really looks set to make it happen this season!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on February 14, 2023, 1:38 pmI'm curious to see what the contract ends up looking like, but I'm happy to have Wacha in the fold. Honestly if we would have had the same off-season minus Bogaerts I would have been pretty happy. With him it's crazy. It's a good time to be a Padres fan.

I know Wacha is not what he used to be in his early days with STL; however, his add does make me feel a lot better entering the season and having enough SP depth. I am sure that he wont get back to those days either, but I do see it as realistic that he can be the same, maybe a tick or two better than last season. He will not face the AL East as many times as he did last season, and with the new schedule, wont see the LAD that many times either. And with the defense that SD has, especially the INF, should not have a lot of balls that wiggle through for hits. Plus, working with Niebla wont be a bad thing for him either.
Youre right, its a great time to be a Padre fan!

That would open a roster spot but wouldn't help keep us under the CBT...depending on what we're giving Wacha but we have to be paying him what......$8mil?
Didn't mean from a CBT perspective, especially for Crismatt ..more so on losing him if DFA cause he didn't make the 26.. Morejon as an upside good trade value move.. like Fenn mentioned maybe a AA or AAA "blocked" C prospect who is decent not elite... with a look at 2024...
If money is the issue Garcia $3.5 probably has the best Value/$$relief combo of all our Pitchers ... Pomz could with a strong healthy ST.. upside wise and trade value maybe Morejon/Baez carry the most value, without hurting the 2023 BP much..
