Eovaldi is interesting as well

Mitch Hanniger DH/OF might be someone to keep tabs on as well.. could be a "bargain" type add with his track record at a "supression" ballpark.. a good slugger to bat behind Manny or in the 5th hole

We should have a clearer picture over the next 2 weeks as I am sure AJP will attempt to resign some or even extend some and we will know who if any of the big 3 opt out..

I think that Preller/Seidler will easily exceed the CBT threshold this offseason for 2023.

With the impending FA of Darvish and Snell after 2023, the opt out ability of Machado after 2023, and then Soto's FA at the end of 2024, 2023 should/could be our best chance at obtaining glory in a WS Championship.

I would not be surprised by a payroll that exceeds $250M and pushes close to $275M.

Still trying to refine these numbers, using a combo of Spotrac.com and MLBTR for salaries and projected arb increases. (Im a little bored at work today 🙂 ) This is about where I have SD sitting for 2023 towards the CBT number of $233M.

IF all 3 players opt out, I have SD sitting about $213M±, leaving SD about $20M. IF no one opts out, SD sits about $232M, only $1M available to stay under. Both of these numbers include the $12.28 in dead Hosmer money and the $1M to buy out Myers 2023 salary of $20M/ but only $13.83M in CBT money.

Lets say that Seidler OKs $275M for 2023. Part of that will go towards the penalty dollars, which will be between 30 and 42% the more money that they spend. Plus, there will need to be some dollars for trade deadline acquisitions as well.

I believe this will be SD second consecutive year over the CBT, they will pay a 30% penalty on all dollars over $233M, and then they would incur an additional 12% surcharge on all dollars between $253M and $273M.

Pitching Staff;

I like our 3 SPs returning for 2023 in Darvish, Musgrove, and Snell. Just need Snell to be more consistent through the entire season. Despite the malice towards Clevinger on this board, I still think he returns to SD next season. And I think after his knee heals (probably worse than we know) and a full season of recovery from TJ, he will be an above average #4 SP for SD. IF you all can not stomach a return of Clevinger (which I understand), I do think we should look at Quintana and Z. Davies to fill out the SP 5. Then we can look at some combo of Morejon, Groome, Weathers for the injury/spot start/occasional needed 6th starter. Martinez could also be thrown in the mix for a starters role, although I think his value is better in the pen, since he was not very good seeing the line up the third time through. Although that is the same for 70% of all ML starters now.

With that said, I think some monies needs to be spent to keep both Suarez and Martinez. Their value to the relief staff this season was vital. Then we have to see what we get from Pomeranz, and the other injured RPs returning. Depending on the return of Suarez and Martinez, I do think we will have some pitching to use for a possible trade towards a bat or younger SP candidate.

Now that I've calmed down after the last game I could see Clev back but ONLY as a 5th starter. We still need a solid #4.

Apples and oranges … their $220MM is salary for 2023 but need to look at the salaries for CBT purposes and they have that at $230MM ($3MM under the $233MM threshold). I had the number at $232MM ($1MM under) … both within the reasonable difference range.

Again, we need to focus on all the adds being covered by exceeding the CBT threshold .. and by how much will Siedler go over?

You are not looking in the right spot, I was on that page, and that is not the CBT payroll. They have another section on that page, and they have the CBT number and it sits at $231M. And then when you add in the $1M buy out for Myers, then you are at $232M, just like Fenn and I have said.

So reading CBS Sports, they have a good article, basically discussing what we are already discussing here. The closing statement follows, and why we (Fenn 😉 ) should be optimistic about 2023 and making the playoffs again.

"Still, an optimistic view of the Padres shows them with three MVP-caliber position players, three starters capable of throwing like an ace on any given night, a bullpen bolstered by a guy who has won three Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year awards and a good supporting cast. That likely means another trip to the playoffs, and anything can happen there."
