Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 27, 2023, 7:14 amCan anyone verify we sign Jantzen White.. utility.. saw a bleep on it but can't confirm it
Nvm found it under Padres transactions 1/19/23..
This former Red Sox prospect was kind of a Jackson Merrill make up without the talent.. a gamer/get dirty type (aka Flannery type) had some success at AAA but stalled there..Red Sox were loaded then.. went to JPN but performed well below avg.. we will see if he can get back to his career AAA norms .750ish OPS and maybe get a shot at some point.. long odds but good depth

Quote from fenn68 on January 27, 2023, 10:59 amWhile we are in a bit of a dead period for transactions ... even rumors ... I started thinking about two SP candidates that have the pedigree to be factors in 2023 (IF things come together for them):
- Brett Honeywell (28) ... Melvin actually mentioned his name while discussing SP. He was an elite prospect (5 times on the BA and MLB top 100 prospect list reaching high in the Top 15) ... on the fast track ... UNTIL that dreading TJ surgery in 2018 knocking him out of 2018 and 2019 then COVID took out 2020. 2021 he returned with mediocre (but not bad) results in AAA. Then in 2022 IL with a strained elbow. Health is the biggest concern but at at only 28 and 4 years removed from TJ he has a good chance of rebounding to his former status (or at least close). He was effective this winter in the DR winter league ... so appears health is for now back. No minor league options but if decent in ST at worst case he makes the active roster as the long RP/6th SP. At league minimum and 6 years control. Could be the Padres "surprise" of the spring / season.
- Julio Teheran (32) ... non-roster so maybe not opening day but poised to be a call-up if he rebounds. For his nine years with ATL (2011-2019) he started 226 games (3.67 ERA) and two time All-STAR. Then things fell apart at age 30 first with LAA in 2020 (COVID season) where he was just ineffective then a non-factor in DET in 2021 with a shoulder injury. 2022 just floated around the INDY league and MEX league. However had a good run this winter in winter ball. So, apparently he is "healthy". Never a hard thrower (90MPH FB) so loss of velocity should not be an issue. Have to think (hope) that his excellent nine year run in ATL where he was always healthy and an innings eater has a chance to return since he is "only" 32. Again not expecting a rebound to that All-Star level but maybe that #6/long relief role.
Honeywell and Teheran are no sure things but both have the pedigree to have more of chance to impact 2023 than some of the other internal candidates ... and maybe not worse than any of the "marginal" external options.

I put Groome and Weathers in that former top 100 prospects category who could surprised.. I see Both at the pool doing things they haven't done in the past which = hungry for MLB life..
Font is another one to keep an eye on

Would not mind San Diego boy who didn't want to pitch in San Diego to end his career in San Diego
Cole Hamels threw for teams today in Arlington, Texas, and was said to look “insanely good.” Predicts he will receive interest off this session. 88-91 mph.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 27, 2023, 1:40 pmWe need at least two of the "younger" guys to step up.
Morejon,Weathers,Honeywell,Groome,Baez.
It would be fantastic if we could count on two of these guys to be our #4-#5's after 2023.
Of course we would have to re-sign Honeywell.

Given Honeywell was signed with less than one year ML service time … I think the Padres have six years control as long as he is on the 40 man roster.

I'd be happy with one claiming 1/6
Assuming Joe and Nick are 2/6.. that would give us 3/6 heading into 2024.. with Others Wolf/Mazur and maybe one of the ones expected now to take a little longer.. making it a manageable 2 open spots (one of which could be Yu).. The further we go 25 Lizarraga/Williams/others.. 26 Lesko/Snelling/Leija.. the better arms get .. so yeah +1 good +2 internal arms claiming spots for 24 during 2023 would be awesome
