2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on January 23, 2023, 4:25 pmTwins just trade for Michael Taylor to be their CF/OF (for a couple of minor RP).
First Twins will have a very good defensive OF of Buxton-Gallo-Taylor-Kepler allowing Kiriloff to settle in at 1B.
Just to speculate, Twins have a decent OF prospect in Larnach (LHH with power) but need RP … maybe a trade with the Padres for a RP? Think Larnach has minor league options.
Twins seem to be going for it in 2023 …. So maybe a decent set of RP could get it done. On the other hand, thinking that they could keep Larnach and choose to deal Kepler (LHH)(expensive with 1 year control and a $10MM club option) for maybe Pomeranz to level out the money?
Would prefer Larnach but Kepler would give plus defense and another LHH (Azocar to AAA) and cover RF pre-Tatis. Might increased the chances of a Grisham or Kim trade I guess.

For reason of the control, I would also prefer Larnach. Although I think they are the similar bat, no sure about the defense, so ?????
To take Pomeranz it has to be Kepler, that works, excess for excess.
To take Pomeranz and get Larnach, if SD has to add a low to mid level prospect, that would be fine as well.
Either way I think that SD gets better with this exchange.
And yes, if SD adds another capable CFer with a ML bat, then yes SD can use Grisham to add a SP that is a needle mover.

According to the report on MLBTR, it happened last summer while Clevinger was on the SD roster. Probably part of the reason SD didnt resign him.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 24, 2023, 2:00 pmWonder what Petco naming rights go for this time around ..in June 2002 Petco signed a 22yr $60 mil naming rights contract.. based on baseball's inflation what is the new deal worth 22 $600?.. seems like ballplayers have at least 10x's their $$ since..

Quote from fenn68 on January 24, 2023, 2:08 pmJust juggling the options of a Twins - Padres deal … Twins have an extra LHH OF and Padres have extra RP … so at that level potentially a match (probably in ST).
What is “tricky” is both teams a building to be contenders in 2023 and likley would only deal if it makes the current roster better. Consider:
Kepler (30) LHH LF-CF-RF .. plus defense … 2022: 229/304/485 … 2 years control at $8.5MM and a club option at $10MM.
Larnach (26) LHH LF-RF … average defense … 2022: 226/309/381 … at minimum with 5 years control
======
Pomeranz (34) LHRP … oft injured … 1 control year at $10MM.
then a set of longer control RP in Wilson (5 years); Baez (5 years); Filipe (6 years); Cosgrove (6 years) and a few others.
=======
Padres side of the deal will not take on more payroll for this kind of fringe move so maybe:
1. Padres get Kepler (veteran who can step in for Tatis to start the season and be a LHH option in the OF as Engel is RHH). MINN has to take Pomeranz after proves healthy in ST and a RP like Filipe to balance the money / risk.
Or
2. Padres get Larnach (upside hitting potential that could be optioned for the future to cover injury and the 2025 departures of LHH Soto and Carpenter … at least in part … with noting exciting coming near term for LHH OF. MINN gets Wilson (28) also with 5 years control is sort of balance OR maybe a combo of Crismatt (better established in the ML) and one of the comers in Filipe, Baez, Cosgrove.
Guessing MINN would like option 2 … Larnach would not have a prominent role in 2023 but an upgrade to the pen would for them.
Padres? Kepler would give a better upgrade to the 2023 roster while Larnach would be a low cost insurance / future piece.
Now if we dream … Larnach for Pomeranz (if healthy and effective in ST) with the Padres throwing in a secondary RP (or eat some salary) would also work if the Padres are really worried about Pomeranz holding on for a full season.

Nick Gordon is who I would want as a fit.. Basically what we are lacking in our bench a proven Swiss army knife..

Quote from fenn68 on January 24, 2023, 4:04 pmJust listened to an interview with Melvin and he commented on the 6 vs 5 man rotation … basically hedges. Likes the 6 man IF the 4-5-6 fit that profile. Martinez and Lugo seem to be the insiders for 4-5 but it appears that Melvin wants to see if they can go reasonably deep in games … if so would allow more efficient use of a 6. Seem to be saying if 4-5 cannot go deep they might be better served with another RP (multi-inning I guess).
He (as expected) was open to who does well in ST for that #6 role citing roster types in Morejon, Weathers, Groome, and Honeywell … might just have not had others on the tip of his mind.
