Maybe he wasn't healthy in the playoffs .. but it seemed everytime he was put in a pressure situation Alfaro delivered (2022 Only yr as Padre and he put himself in the record books with the most walkoff hits (5) in a season.. then he goes to the Dominican and has 2 more walk offs and then 2 HRs in their World Series and ends up being the MVP... I ❤️ Alfaro!..

You trade Kim for a guy because that's what you all are talking about and Bogaerts gets hurt in ST or early season...who is going to play SS ?
Not one player mentioned is worth the value that Kim brings to the Padres
IF we traded Kim to MIA which is the option that most think make sense. One I dont think I am making that trade with MIA unless I am getting Wendle or Berti along with the SP. So IF Bogaerts went down with Kim gone, and we got Wendle, he would take SS. If the additional piece was Berti which I would prefer, then Crone takes SS and Berti takes 2B.
So does Kim's value as insurance for a SS injury more valuable than the SP he could fetch in return. Depends on the SP and other pieces that could be in the deal. IF you go on WAR from baseball reference for 2022, Darvish-4.4, Musgrove-3.2, Snell-2.0, Lopez-3.0, Lazardo-2.0. So neither Lopez or Luzardo are just guys. Same value as Snell, and both are cheaper and have more control years. Plus Berti's WAR was 2.5, so if it was Lopez and Berti for Kim, that is 5.1 WAR in Kim leaving, and 5.5 WAR coming back to SD in Lopez and Berti. Or 4.5 if the return is Luzardo and Berti, which would be my preference.
We know you have more value in keeping Kim, and that is a totally reasonable point of view. I think it may make sense to sell high on Kim, and add depth/talent to where I think SD biggest deficiency is right now, and 2024 and beyond, starting pitching.

We could also sign Andrus or Iglesias for dirt cheap to be the bench piece SS/2B utility portion of the equation

IF is a funny word....IF Clevinger had not imploded and given up the 4 run lead in the 1st and IF we had not pitched to Harper who knows what would have happened and the only thing I know for sure is IF my aunt had a set of cajónes she would have been my uncle.
Play out the first half and see where we stand before making that kind of move.

I would expect that Andrus / Iglesias would not be all that eager to sign with the Padres “on the cheap” knowing that the history of Bogaerts / Cronenworth suggest they are going to play 150 games. If they sign on the cheap with any team it will because they will have a chance to play and maybe earn more on achievable incentives.
For the same reason Padres would not spend a lot for that chance of long term injury to either … while having needs elsewhere now and down the road.
If Bogaerts went down for the season (sort of depends when) … and Kim was traded … expect either Cronenworth or Tatis to make the position shift to SS. Easier to backfill a corner OF or 2B than a SS.

Quote from fenn68 on January 19, 2023, 11:59 amReally don’t expect a major trade in the near term … maybe in ST after the Padres see what they have in camp / health of players … same may go for any trade partner with a SP who would wait to which potential trade partners suddenly have a greater SP issue due to injury. The seller wants some greater leverage.
Better chance the wait until mid-season / trade deadline.
However, may see a deal for depth ML/AAA healthy innings eater for maybe the #5/6 slot if the price is not too steep. Maybe at the level of Rosario and a RP. Also, might see a more MiL deals with veterans with a ML split contract.

I am waiting for the Crismatt for $1.5 mil Intl $$ for 2024 deal Before they announce Diaz signing officially and need that spot in the 40

Quote from Randy Manese on January 19, 2023, 1:07 pmHenry, what Diaz signing are you referring to - haven't seen anything along that lines. Also, Padres already have to clear a space for Nelson Cruz, so a Diaz signing would mean two spots have to open up.
