2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2023, 1:09 pmSo, if I read this right, the Padres are $3.3MM under the next threshold BUT still need to cover:
- Engel's contract (currently unknown)
- Incentives for various players
- Pay of call-up to cover IL players
Doubt they can stay under without a payroll reduction deal.

Let alone add at the deadline or to cover an injury.. safe to say AJP has been instructed to stay "under" UNLESS a true difference maker can be added either now or at the deadline...

Quote from BoosterSD on January 13, 2023, 1:46 pmSo all 8 are in and done. MLBTR estimated that we would spend $47.7M, and they all got done for $50.23M, off by $2.53M. Not to bad.
On a different note, we spent $50.23M in just arbitration, what is that, about $20M than OAK will spend all season on their entire payroll.

Oak is at $26 mil total payroll lol... they also have 2 SP we could use IF we need too.. the SP from KBO (USA guy) that was #50 in mlbtr FA top 50..and the Japanese guy they just signed to 1 yr deal.. should an emergency present itself...

Quote from 3fingersplit on January 13, 2023, 3:31 pmWith all the players that got signed/raises today...the one I am the happiest for is Jake...he will get 4.225 million this season and in my opinion he is worth every penny. Not bad for a throw in when they made the trade with Tampa Bay....Here's to the "Crone Zone"
Congrats Jake !!!
Go Padres !!!

John Conniff podcast is sooo goood... he thinks Groome can be "that" guy for us.. good insight on Luis Campusano and many of the guys who have a shot at helping us in 2023.. must listen for Padres fans heading towards ST
The Padres are stacked at the big league level. But, they're still gonna need the farm in 2023. John Conniff from @madfriars joins the #OnFriar Podcast to share the state of the system:https://t.co/eJr1offggL #NBC7SportsWrap

This could end up the difference maker later in the season and in the playoffs.
We could do the same with the more reliable Hill.. Hader/Suarez/Hill/Garcia L/R/L/R.. I know Pomz is elite "if" healthy but what has he given us in the last couple yrs.. almost nothing..whereas his $8.5 mil off the 2023 payroll saves us penalty $$ and gives us space under last tier to add a SP via separate trade.. so Pomz biggest value might be as a trade chip (with a healthy ST at near his old levels velo/stuff wise)
Hill was included as the LH option for the 7th inning.

Pomeranz/Garcia
Hill/Wilson
Castillo/Lugo
That should be an outstanding pen (the first 6) to cover innings 7-9 for all 162 games without having to burn out any arms with a creative mix and match not requiring any one pitcher to go three games in a row and potentially give a tiring arm a multi-day rest without hurting the pen.
Pitchers 7 and 8 will be 6th innings and earlier, pure mop up in blowout either way, and at least one may land that 6th (spot) starter role. Who survives will make for an interesting ST.
Lugo is ticketed for the 5th/4th starter with Martinez TO START the season. For the final two … from the left side (if they want to go four L and four right) Morejon may have the inside track (even if most think he is better off starting in the minors) and a long look will be given Rule 5 Lopez. Probably would put Castillo next, preferring to have him in AAA working as the closer and ready to either step in mid-season for injury and in 2024 post Hader / Pomeranz. I would also look to Cosgrove as a wild card. He, of all the eligible Padre prospects, was added to the 40 man to protect from Rule 5. Padres see something and for the role of long man / part time starter his minor league history as a SP (before being converted to the pen) may be appealing.
Then from the right side, maybe looking for a similar profile of a multi-inning / spot starter, as the 7th/8th in the pen …Crismatt has the advantage (out of options) but Honeywell (out of options) could be the wild card. Honeywell has not pitched much for years (injuries) and is coming back most likely as a RP initially. At least appears healthy with his work in the winter leagues (as a SP but only for limited innings in each start)… fit for long man in the pen. Clearly has the “stuff” and given the rest of the staff will not get overworked. Still high upside, league minimum, 6 years control and a high risk of being claimed if DFA if he shows anything in ST … and this is for the 13th pitcher … maybe a better chance than most give him.
If they are good in ST and with an eye on the future … plus both out of options … the last two slots could go the Lopez (L) / Honeywell (R) TO START he season and if they underperform DFA them and do the call-ups.

Apparently Kim for Lopez being talked about?
If straight up, do we do it? I'd say yes. We need young controllable arms.
