2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 13, 2023, 12:30 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on January 13, 2023, 12:23 pmWith Pom we have a great LH/RH combo for almost every inning after the 5th.
This could end up the difference maker later in the season and in the playoffs.
We could do the same with the more reliable Hill.. Hader/Suarez/Hill/Garcia L/R/L/R.. I know Pomz is elite "if" healthy but what has he given us in the last couple yrs.. almost nothing..whereas his $8.5 mil off the 2023 payroll saves us penalty $$ and gives us space under last tier to add a SP via separate trade.. so Pomz biggest value might be as a trade chip (with a healthy ST at near his old levels velo/stuff wise)

Quote from Jeremy Hill on January 13, 2023, 12:36 pmCarpenter has 500k in incentives for reaching each of 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 and 550 PAs.
Martinez has 500k in incentives for making 10, 15, 20 and 25 starts. He also has 100k incentives for 10 and 20 appearances and 200k incentives for 30, 40, 50 and 60 appearances.
Lugo has unknown incentives for starting and relieving as well.
Without any other moves to cut salary we'll likely end up past the next threshold if they stay healthy and perform. Something has to give. I don't think they would sacrifice the draft positioning to just barely go over.

Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2023, 12:40 pmLH: Morejon, Groome, Lopez, Castillo, Cosgrove, Kerr, Weathers will all be in camp to make a case for the 26 man and establish availability of Pomeranz ... or even a RHRP if the Padres want more than 3 LHRP.
RH: Avila, Knehr, Filipe, Baez, Honeywell, Poppen, and non-roster Teheran, Stammen, Espinosa, Font will be making their cases for the 26 man and establishing the availability of Crismatt and Garcia.
Only a couple really need to impress enough to justify dealing a Pomeranz, Garcia, Crismatt ... all FA after the season. None will generated a big return ... but payroll savings (and reduce current penalty level). Preller digs deep and maybe he can find a hidden gem in the DSL/ACL/low A or pick up some international signing money.

Garcia $3.5 and Pomz $8.5 mil.. are 2 pieces we could move ..Pomz probably after a healthy spring..Garcia at anytime..Crismatt has good value too (and no options left) so a lesser $$ play but definetely someone that could be moved.. keep in Mind C Severino $1.95 mil and P Teheran $6mil also have MLB deals in place if they make the 26

Good point and those incentive seem pretty achievable. Some (at some point) will have to go ... agree going over by a little is not all that strategic.
Side: no idea on what Engel is getting as a contract ... have they officially announced the signing?

I mean without looking it up any move for an upgrade at P / C or other at the Deadline even at 40% of their contract by then is likely to put us over (if not already over with bonuses etc)..so maybe the treshold is $300 mil.. which is like $14 mil + penalties away from $272,999,999.99 mil or 1 penny shy of $273...

Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2023, 12:58 pmGiven the toe tapping around the threshold ... Preller could be focusing on Luzardo, Cabrera, et al with MIA and NOT Lopez. Target a league minimum arm with longer control while opening up some payroll breathing room for "emergency" adds later.
Also, might not be marketing Campusano (unless it results in someone taking Pomeranz) since Severino as the replacement would increase the payroll over Campusano.
======
Another issue will be paying replacements for players going to the IL (paid their contact) and paying the replacement at league minimum (or higher if in their contract). Expect at a minimum the equivalent of one player for a full season ($720MM) but expect more.
