2023 offseason

We may all be able to construct potential deals to fill the upgrade for the mid-rotation … but other than MIA who is dangling out some quality from the ML roster, don’t see another teams even suggesting that established quality of SP being available. So maybe a lot of wishful thinking in play.

If the SP is not a PROVEN mid-rotation ML … more wishful thinking that the pitcher will suddenly develop into that mid-rotation IN 2023. That wish is not worth a Kim or Grisham. If that pitcher settles in a bottom rotation that does not move the 2023 needle enough to justify the the trade of Kim/Grisham since the Padres have quite a long list of potential for bottom of the rotation.

If not a MIA deal … expect a move at the trade deadline (if needed).

Supposedly Mia/Seattle/Milwaukee/Boston and NYY are listening on trades for  their SP depth .. with various degree of high upside arms/ to proven mid rotation guys to lower rotation options as all seem to have 7+ MLB ready/proven arms

Just to be clear I am in no way suggesting we trade Kim for just any SP.

Unless we can get a guy controllable for at "minimum" 2 years AND he is clearly on the level of Snell then we just roll with what we have.

That's why I keep mentioning Miami...They indeed seem to be the only team with "too much" QUALITY SP and also in need of bats.

Yeah I think Kim and/or Grish are not moving this late and with next to nothing left on the bone in FA for anything less than a bona-fide #3 (aka Pablo Loppez about as low a SP as AJP is willing to trade either for).. otherwise I think AJP will play in the Lauer type world or a bit worse.. or as u mentioned Not force a deal ..and ride with what we have til the deadline or sooner if an opportunity materializes..(like the Manea one did last yr)

None of those Miami SP can sniff Snell bro.. Snell is one of the top 20-30 SP in baseball.. Lopez is like top 75 to 90 maybe

What do we think, between Carpenter and Cruz, 900 AB's?

If those guys stay healthy, limited wear and tear ( certainly Cruz!), is this a realistic expectation? And if so, what kind of numbers- 30+ HR's, 120 RBI? I'd be happy with that.

Maybe the second half of the season! I would trade him for a bag of balls for his first half production ( or should I say lack thereof?)

I am in the 350 AB Carp ..300 Cruz.. camp (as DH only...Carp will see maybe 100 more ABs on the field)

.245/.320/.475 .795 OPS camp.. 25 HRs 100 RBIs as a tremendous improvement on our DH numbers from 2022.. our DH's in 2022 combined for 22 HRs and only a .719 OPS..(this includes Manny and others in off days otherwise #'s would be worse.. Voit was our best performer and Bell our worst at the position)

Carpenter is the real wild card in usage … part-time DH sure but how much does he play (LF pre-Tatis), 2B/1B/3B to spell Kim/Cronenworth/Machado, and if Kim to SS to spell Bogaerts … in to cover that move. More if minor injuries.

Fair guess that the starting INF will not play 162 … so if they go 150 +/= that is 48 games for the only INF back-up in Carpenter … add the LHH DH could see him getting 400-500 AB … IF he plays like he did in NY.

Cruz is only a DH so question as to how much he will play against RHP.

======

I don’t know how Engel may draw from some DH AB beyond his 4th OF role. Plus Azocar might need to get some AB … somewhere … somehow.

Post suspension, barring injury our everyday batting order/starting line-up would probably look something like this:

  1. Tatis  RF
  2. Cronenworth 1b
  3. Machado 3b
  4. Soto LF
  5. Bogaerts SS
  6. Carpenter/Cruz DH
  7. Campusano/Nola c
  8. Kim 2b
  9. Grisham CF                                                                                                                                                                                                         Previously, I projected Cronenworth to have a very good year, looking more like he did in 2021.  I'm hoping we see a little more growth from Kim, not so much in BA, but more OBP and SA (believe a 330/420 is possible for a 750 OPS) to go along with a slightly improved BA - maybe 260-ish.  Grisham will never be a great hitter, but a 225-230 average is possible with an occasional pop -12-18 HRs.  If you get this from the bottom of the line-up and just average performance from your 6th and 7th hitters, we should have a very productive line-up.  The question with Grisham is whether you could get almost the same kind of offensive production by platooning Azocar and Dahl.  If so, then Grisham could be on the move but not until we get pretty deep into spring training.
