2023 offseason
Quote from 3fingersplit on January 3, 2023, 2:21 pmWhy don't we just let the season play out before all this nonsense of moving on from Machado and Soto and trading away Tatis, Cronenworth and Kim consumes you guys....this team is primed to make a serious run for a WS Title just as it is with Boegarts added....let these guys play and see where they are at the All Star break.

Because 2021 showed us just what can happen when injuries occur, especially SP. SD does not have enough quality arms to survive an injury to Davish, Snell, or Musgrove. And even if they stay healthy, Martinez and Lugo are not SP on a WS caliber team, so still need at least one more SP arm. Not to mention the bench still sucks, and need at least one more real ML level COF to survive the time until Tatis returns, not to mention his 30 days + on the IL that will probably happen as well. Almost everyone on this site, was willing to simply cut Grisham until he hit 3 HRs in the playoffs, Kims value is defense at SS, so he is not as valuable at 2B. So if pieces can be moved to make the 2023 better and deeper, then they should be discussed.
And finally and most importantly, we are bored as S*@T waiting for the season to start!!! So this is what we do here. Done it for years. And I am sure that we will continue to do so going forward.

Let's hope there was some other interest, and the CHC had to go over league min to sign him, at least saving SD some money.

They would have to go over the $13mil for that to be relevant.. I mean to Hosmer if Cubs offer min and Tigers offer $5mil there is no difference he gets $13mil either way.. Now if they add a 4th yr @$5mil then the min + $5 ÷4 ×3 = X ...X would get deducted from the amount SDP would pay..

Probably makes more sense for the signing team to take the existing contract and (on a separate deal for year 4) pay the additional money. AAV for Hosmer ... for them ... remains league minimum. Year 4 stands on its own.
Not sure but if they just give him a "signing bonus" ... let's say $3MM ... that would leave the existing contract in place and the $3MM would be their AAV hit over the league minimum.

Another not sure issue. Padres dealt Hosmer, will pay his remaining contract less the league minimum, There has to be a rule that the acquiring team has to pay a player on contract the league minimum. Same logic if Hosmer was a FA and signed. The team he is playing for must pay league minimum ... former team the rest.
In Hosmer's cast ... before being released ... Boston was on the hook for the league minimum, Padres the remainder. Hosmer is signed as a FA by the Cubs at league minimum ... does that automatically eliminate the Boston obligation?

Quote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2023, 6:03 amA highlight reel on the Padres website this morning showing the 5 hardest hit balls last season (exit velocity), and all were hit by either Hosmer or Alfaro, including 4 of the 5 by Alfaro. And two of those were walk off game winners. The most impressive the 3 run HR on Mothers Day.
To bad the knee injury did in Alfaro in the second half. As the back up, Campusano has some big shoes to fill.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2023, 6:41 amTwo questions, IF SD could get Montas and Schmidt from NYY for Grisham, but SD had to take Stanton. One, would you be interested? And two, how much money would NYY have to include to make the deal worth it for SD?
Stantons BA and OBP were down last season, although he still hit 31 HRs and drove in 78 runs, and had an OPS+ of 113. 2021 was still a very good season for him, BA of .273, OBP of .354, SLG was .516, with an OPS+ of 136.

I would say no way.. but let's say AJP says ok
If we include Pomz + Garcia ..roughly $12 mil AAV and Marlins are in the hook for $30 mil last 3 yrs including paying $10mil on last yr which is an option.. this lowered the actual $$ owed to Stanton to $119mil.. with his high AAV we would surely have to pay almost 2X his AAV or $60mil ish for 2023 with our penalty.. so unless NYY ate $80 or so million I wouldn't even entertain Stanton..why would they ..he is owed 166 including option yr Miami is paying 30.. so 136.. I am sure NYY can get plenty of value from Staton at $56mil for the duration of his contract..
I just don't see this helping us much at the expense of losing Manny/Snell and Hader just to accommodate him..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 4, 2023, 7:46 amAnyone think we should pursue Reynolds?
We have something no one else has "a proven 2x GG replacement" in Grisham... obviously ++
With that said ..the difference in WAR (yes Defense matters) between Grish and Reynolds doesn't move the needle much and I am always leary of Pitt guys..Giles/Frazier/even our own Bay.. couldn't hit nearly as well or with similar power when at Petco.. so ???
People get caught up with sexy offensive stats.. but I don't think we have the yr we just had in 2022 without Kim and Grish as 50% of our up the middle team... just something to consider.. and if Grish "puts it all together" he becomes a 4 to 5 WAR player..and we lose him and more important maybe 2 of (Merrill/Lesko and/or Zavala) in the process as well...
I would pass on Reynolds.. offense will not/should not be a problem in 2023.. a SP with similar control to Reynolds (23-24-25) would be a much better way to spend Grish and/or resources.. that actually move the needle and fill a need..
Adding Seth Brown (LF/1B) big power that translates to Petco (A's/Mariners very similar power parks)..for what would be something like Rosario + Wethers + low level golden ticket (Rojas?).. would be much cheaper and more impact full with an actual +add vs a replacement/upgrade of an existing player.. Brown 25-30 bombs with very good D in LF but slightly below avg has tremendous splits vs RHP as well..and at worst plays mostly vs RHP..besides Brown is making minimum $$ for 2023
