2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2023, 8:00 amQuote from Henry Silvestre on January 4, 2023, 7:46 amAnyone think we should pursue Reynolds?
I was thinking about this yesterday. Hmm Reynolds very good bat, SH, and plays all 3 OF spots. But compare these two batting lines.
BA .262, OBP .345, SLG .461, OPS .807, OPS+ 126
BA .230, OBP .305, SLG .444, OPS .749, OPS+ 116
First line is Reynolds 2022, second line is Seth Brown 2022. For the salary ($6.75M Reynolds v. league min Brown) and the cost in prospects to get the player, IMO Reynolds is not worth getting. I dont think the amount of prospects it would take to get Reynolds moves the needle more than a combo of Brown/Grisham offers. And Reynolds is about $3.4M more than both combined.
So I would trade for Brown plays LF until Tatis returns, then 1B or DH, which would leave Crone at 2B, and Kim can get us that controllable SP.
Or keep Kim, and vs tough RHSP Kim sits, with Crone at 2B, and Carpenter and Brown DH and 1B. And vs LHSP Kim is at 2B, Crone at 1B, and Carpenter and Brown split DH duties. Plus Brown gives us that extra LFer to cover for injuries during the season.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2023, 8:31 amWe dont trade Kim or Grisham and I can understand that thinking, we still need to improve our bench, and a COF for the 1st month.
I still would trade for Brown, and Berti as well. Both would upgrade the bench, removing Dixon and Batten from the bench, leaving them in AAA for injury coverage.
SD gets Brown. OAK gets Weathers, Kerr, and Rojas.
SD gets Berti. MIA gets Crismatt and Rosario.
After the return of Tatis, bench is Brown, Berti, Campusano, and Azocar.

Doubt MIA would think that is enough for Berti … but would consider that from the Padres view. Crismatt is on the bubble of even making the 2023 Padres and Rosario maybe be a high prospect (I am not so convinced yet of him being more than a bench MLer) … so for a useful 32 year old RHH utility piece makes some sense.
As for Brown, I see him much more limited in his value. Yes, he has LHH power, but his wRC+ vs LHP is a very weak 60 (vs excellent vs RHP at 129). Also, at 30, 2022 was his first really good season and that split with a first half (283 AB) 216/269/396 vs a second half (217 AB) 249/348/507. Not sure I want to put that much stock in the last three months of 2022 in valuing his future. Plus his dWAR was a -13.2.
Would I add Brown …not considering alternatives … yes BUT I would value him as a part-time LHH against RHP and not over weigh the impact of the 20 games fill in for Tatis. Part of what diminishes his value is being a LHH when you have Carpenter, Cronenworth, Soto to cover LF/1B/DH. Would put more emphasis on a RHH in that role. Would not include any quality prospect for him (e.g. Rojas) but maybe a Weathers and a mid-range prospect.
Basically Berti / Brown would upgrade Batten / Dixon but using trade chip that are not critical for 2023 or the future. If their price is too high … still are alternatives out there.
If there are key trade chips that could be moved (and I had replacements) it would be for an impact SP which I see as more critical than upgrading bench pieces for the full season. The offense is elite now and can survive some injuries. The SP is not and is at high risk of collapsing with injuries / under performance.

I see Brown as more of a Platoon split guy vs RHP .... than as a true starter.. being that 70% of P ate rightes if not more.. he would have around 450 ABs .. and play in about 112 games..while PH or coming in late in games aka (Kim vs high leverage RHP gets PH for ..Crone slides over ..Smith or Carp to 1B)..when SP is LHP and Kim starts 💯 of the time when available
As for Rosario ..he is a grade 50 spec with 20/20 type projection and spectacular defense as well as versatility SS/2B/3B so while he is somewhat blocked here (no real playing time available) he could flourish or at least be a highly used utility player especially in a place like Oakland...
In many ways Batten makes a better 13th for us..as he is no longer young..he understands his role 4 ABs at week or so..and can play every position including P (except for C) ...has speed and line drive power..and is pesky at the plate... Rosario is too good a prospect to waste in our bench.. its not really insurance for an injury to anyone as Crone/Xander/Kim/Tatis can cover pretty much any position 2B/SS/3B Rosario plays... best thing for Rosario and Padres is to trade him this offseason/ST... or pick up an OF glove and play LF all ST in an effort to earn the 20 day LF job.. I think AJP should explore a trade for a similar "blocked" spec..and once again I end up with AZ Dominic Fletcher..even if he is 3 yrs older (25) and only a 45 spec vs Rosario 50... I think his skill set speed/defense and CF repertoire with some pop.. fits our needs >..

From MIA view point, Berti is pretty much a bench player already, I know you stated that some site has him as their starting LFer, some debate there, anyway. And they are always looking to save money anyway. So Rosario and Berti are comparable, but Rosario is league min. as is Crismatt, so two players for one, both at league min. saves them about a $1M and they control Rosario for 6 years, and maybe he can take SS for them??
As far as Brown is concerned, its a low risk trade, even if you include Rojas, who is our #17 prospect with our weak system, at SS that is well covered for the next decade. But the prospect cost, for Browns performance, should be negligible, especially compared to Reynolds. As far as the first 20 games, what percent would think we face RHSP???? At least 60%, so he will be fine, and Azocar can handle a couple of spot starts v LHSP.
But the main point, is Brown has some defensive versatility in LF and 1B, and is league min this year, and his numbers wont kill you yet in arb.
And like you agreed, both Brown and Berti are an improvement over Batten and Dixon.

To play devil's advocate I could just as easily make the case that it's the reason we should move Merrill. His stock is high right now. He could go on to be a great player. He could also end up like Andujar, Frazier, Kelenic, Adell and countless others who saw their values crater after their teams held onto them. Things change quickly in prospect land.

I know that Seidler has stated his desire to stay competitive, and thats great. But the simple fact is, this season could be our best chance for a WS Championship. Too many variables after this season, Machado, Darvish, and Snell after this season and Soto the season after. And with that being said, plus Jeremy's comments, IMO no prospect is off limits this season for the right piece.
Go for it this season and get that parade!!!

Just DFAd to make room for Kimbrel.. by Phillies .. this guy misses a lot of bats and usually allows less hits vs IP.. both great metrics..BBs have always hamper him.. but his stuff plays up... and has SP experience in Minors.. If we didn't have Lopez (rule v) already as such a project (but from the left side) I'd be all over this kid
