Yeah, was listening on XM this morning and they were talking about that as well. The unfortunate thing is they are looking for a LFer, something SD is not overly stocked in as well. So not sure how we would match up, involve a 3rd team??
I know you dont like the idea of trading Kim, but I could see a 3 team deal where TEX takes Ozuna, ATL gets Kim, and SD gets the SP they deem best, and with some control for cost purposes and 2024 and beyond.
Ozuna is currently supplying negative value at $16 million per season. I don't think Miami will be interested.
I know MIA would not be interested, I suggested TEX.
TEX is spending money, and have the excess SP that Jeremy was talking about. And yes, Ozuna is making $18M per season, but he did hit 23 HRs last season while batting average was down from his norm. Ozuna is a better option than anything that TEX trotted out into LF last season, and they are pushing to compete with their SP rotation. So they make take the bet that a change of scenery might do well for Ozuna.
Ozuna is making 16m this year and next. His numbers have been down for 2 years and he's had a domestic violence suspension and a DUI. Nobody is taking him. From taking a quick look at the Texas options I wouldn't come close to offering up Kim. I'm thinking more like Rosario and a reliever or something.

Happy to see this. Minor League coaching is essential to developing Major League talent. Like you said, we just picked up a lot of pitching talent in the draft. I would love to see that talent maximized.
Does anyone know anything about Jose Rada? I only found 1 good article on him.

Quote from fenn68 on December 29, 2022, 5:41 pmI think we may be underestimating the potential for Teheran to make a comeback and impact the SP. I am hanging that thought on how much the Padres committed to sign him if he makes the active roster. $6MM is a nice commitment for a non-roster invitee when (at the time) the Padres knew they had some major holes to fill. Sure zero if he does not make the roster but the Padres had to see enough in winter ball.
Don’t know if he has an opt out if not on the ML roster (often pegged around Jun 1) but think he may be SP injury away for the ML or even just take that #6 slot.
Same thoughts around Severino as the back-up catcher. His ML experience and defensive reputation might get him up if they have an alternative plan for Campusano (eg trade or RHH DH). His ML deal would be a $1.95MM with $550K in incentives.
Dahl is a longer shot as a LHH OF … but don’t think he is more than at league minimum.
At some level all three take some of the pressure of the Padres in “forcing” a signing of any fringe FA at a premium price. Also, might provide some cover for trades of a rostered player … thinking Campusano or a RP (or two) without having to get a like piece in return (or hunt for one).
At the core offensively and pitching is already built to be one of the best teams in MLB … so not to panic on the fringe pieces.

Quote from fenn68 on December 29, 2022, 6:06 pmNoted in the Dennis Lin piece on the potential of Kim and Grisham being traded the comment that Campusano is not drawing any interest from other teams … considering he is a Top 100 prospect with two years in AAA as a catcher who can hit … have to really wonder about his future as a catcher … and when the Padres will go a different way with him.
Consider his primary calling card was his offense from the beginning … his defense was a concern (a lot to do with game management). If that is the case along with little trade value and the Padres needed upgrade in the RHH DH role … is it time to just move Campusano to DH / 1B to maximize the upside of his bat? He should be able to unseat Dixon … Severino could handle the back-up catcher role.
Alternatively, if they move Kim and returned Cronenworth to 2B … Carpenter / Campusano can both play full time as 1B/DH without needing another bat added.
The moving of Kim could be the cornerstone for that desired SP upgrade (or OF upgrade).

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 29, 2022, 6:33 pmTeheran in the Dominican Winter league 3.47 ERA ..38+ IP 34 hits.. 3BBs (ONLY 3 BB) 25 SOs...
Lot of current mlb players (Alfaro amongst them) play in the league some for the entire season some just a couple weeks but I would say level of competition is somewhere between AAA/MLB

A gamble but Teheran still is only 31 and as recently as 2019 was pitching effective ball with ATL (he had been twice an All-Star). Derailed in early 2021 with a right shoulder injury and 2022 was a journey through independent ball - Mexico - Dominican Winter league where, at least, he did pitch near 70 innings showing the shoulder seems healthy.
Never a hard thrower so can he reclaim some of the mix of stuff that made him quality pitcher for ATL … at least part way back? Thinking a back end starter … so under a 4.50 ERA would be needed. Not out of the question for a pitcher who was consistently between 3.00 and 4.00 in ATL.
Signed in Nov … so would not be surprised if the Padres are working with him in the off-season on ensuring his shoulder is in top condition for a ST run.
If as many have observed, Morejon who is penciled in #6 has not pitched that many innings and may be better serviced with a minor league stint as a SP before returning to the ML … that could be the open door for Teheran.

Expanding on this, and a piece on MLBTR this morning. They suggest NYY as a potential trade partner for Grisham as well. They suggested as a return for Grisham could be Montas (who struggled in NY, but had a 1.137 WHIP in OAK prior to the trade to NYY) and then either Gleyber Torres or Oswaldo Cabrera. Then Fenn, you mentioned Schmidt as a target you were interested in as well.
I wonder if we could send Grisham and Pomeranz to NYY for Montas, Schmidt, and Cabrera. This saves SD about $5M this season. Plus, Montas gives us 1 year of high end SP, Schmidt gives us a SP going forward, and Cabrera could replace Kim. And then Kim could be used to get us another young controllable arm, Anderson in ATL. Again, helping to solve the rotation issues that will present itself in 2024. And moving Kim saves SD about $14M over the next two seasons, and that money can go towards resigning Darvish and/or Snell.
I know many on here are not a fan of the idea of trading Kim, and I get that for sure, but he is one of our more valuable trade pieces and may help SD more via a trade than playing 2B for SD.
