2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 29, 2022, 1:47 pmQuote from fenn68 on December 29, 2022, 1:26 pmSo, could (would) flip the strategy and move Grisham to MIA for Berti (RHH, older, LF, but elite speed, about equal in pay) AND either Rogers or Garrett?
Padres would really have to rely on Tatis in CF (Soto RF/Berti LF) and Severino as the back-up catcher … not ideal … but a lot depends on the value of the pitcher for the future as potential four SP become FA.
If you went this route, I would think a smart, little move would be trading for Taylor. Better BA and OBP last season than Grisham, less power though, and Taylor won the GG for CF in 2021, so no drop in defense. And then Tatis can stay in a corner spot, and Berti can play super sub and still lead off for the speed.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 29, 2022, 2:01 pmThey aren't on the same level as the Marlins guys, but the Rangers might have some pitching to trade. Their rotation would seem to be set with deGrom, Perez, Heaney, Gray and Eovaldi. That leaves Jake Odorizzi, Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto, Cole Ragans, Taylor Hearn, Brock Burke and Spencer Howard as guys with starting experience on their roster. They also have a few prospects on the precipice in Owen White, Cole Winn, Ricky Vanasco and possibly Jack Leiter.
I'm not going to pretend I know much about most of those guys. Maybe there's an opportunity to pickup some more depth there though.

Yeah, was listening on XM this morning and they were talking about that as well. The unfortunate thing is they are looking for a LFer, something SD is not overly stocked in as well. So not sure how we would match up, involve a 3rd team??
I know you dont like the idea of trading Kim, but I could see a 3 team deal where TEX takes Ozuna, ATL gets Kim, and SD gets the SP they deem best, and with some control for cost purposes and 2024 and beyond.

Ozuna is currently supplying negative value at $16 million per season. I don't think Miami will be interested.

I know MIA would not be interested, I suggested TEX.
TEX is spending money, and have the excess SP that Jeremy was talking about. And yes, Ozuna is making $18M per season, but he did hit 23 HRs last season while batting average was down from his norm. Ozuna is a better option than anything that TEX trotted out into LF last season, and they are pushing to compete with their SP rotation. So they make take the bet that a change of scenery might do well for Ozuna.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 29, 2022, 3:03 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on December 29, 2022, 1:36 pmIMO even if Miami keeps all the pitching they have right now they finish a distant 4th in that division.
TBH even if they had added a top FA bat like Correa I don't see any way they were finishing ahead of NYM,ATL,PHI.
This is why it seems they are being shortsighted trying to trade for major league ready bats.
They should be looking for higher upside prospects 1-2 years away IMO.
All things being equal would they be better off with Grisham or Merrill?
I'd say Merrill.
Not that I want them to trade Merrill...I just think the Marlins are trying to appease their fans by trading for guys they will see play "this year" even though they have no chance in that Division for at least a couple more seasons.
Merrill only moves for Alcantara.. and that ain't happening
Way I see it ..Cueto seems the best add without the -minus - BUT at a $10mil CBT cost plus the draft penalty.. assuming 10 spots is not an issue for AJP... I could see a Luis Garcia trade $3.5 mil (if we got Cueto) so that would lower the > $3.5 of the penalty ..so -$6.8 mil or so.. so instead of Cueto (@$13mil) costing us $23 mil for 2024 with the penalties.. he would only cost us a Net +$16.2 ... Garcia gets replaced (already has by Suarez) Pomz/Wilson/Hill/others can cover Garcia's 7th inning role..
And AJP can be sneaky and get International $$ and a Comp pick for Garcia.. in essence recouping our 2nd lost in Xander deal.. bumping it some 27 slots (making up for the 10 spot drop of our 1st) and regaining the International $$ lost in the Xander deal... Garcia can close or set up so he has a ton of value for teams looking for that role and at $3.5 mil for 2023 a real find.. one way to work the CBT tax downward

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 29, 2022, 3:26 pmAnother DFA who I'd be interested in OPS + 95.. not the greatest vs running game ..a bit better than Nola but can play C/1B/3B.... if we were to move Campy in a trade..PJ could be that insurance guy or even 3rd C on roster behind Nola and Severino or could keep Severino at AAA while backing Nola ..at minimum $$$ pay

I maintain and am highly convinced Merril only is traded for Ohtani or someone of Alcantara’s talent. I firmly believe AJ is going to do everything in his power to pry Ohtani away from the Angels or at least keep him away from the NL rivals even if it means vastly overpaying for a half season. If I’m AJ I am keeping my top 5 valued prospects away from trade to make sure they have players the Angels value. Think about it, Ohtani is exactly who the Padres need on their roster right now (a bat and an arm) literally would solve the two roster holes overnight. If Padres can pry him away, I am offering him a “STUPID” contract that he can’t refuse asap. Imagine if the Padres had signed both Soto and Ohtani or even just Soto…Ohtani would almost be certain to be a Padre via trade.
