2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 28, 2022, 8:03 amQuote from fenn68 on December 28, 2022, 7:28 amWhen Tatis returns there will be one open slot on the 40 man (given the current roster).
For the 13 position players seems as though 11 are pretty much locks: Nola; Cronenworth; Kim; Bogaerts; Machado; Soto; Grisham; Tatis; Carpenter; Campusano (RHH back-up catcher / DH); Azocar (RHH back-up CF .. all OF).
There may be some interesting choice for the remaining two slots out of roster players in Sullivan (LHH C), Rosario (RHH INF), Batten (RHH utility); and Dixon (RHH 1B/DH). All have minor league options. However, none have a compelling resume to make the bench for a contender. Add into the mix some veteran options who are non-roster: Dahl (LHH OF); Severino (RHH C); Schrock (LHH INF) … all could make a strong push for those last two slots. One roster slot open … and Poppen (pitcher with no minor league options will be DFA).
ST will make the decision but if putting veteran experience on the bench is important and actually upgrading offense / defense / flexibility could see two being added.
Severino (as the 3rd catcher) would free up the better bats of Nola and Campusano to DH/1B as RHH as one still is behind the plate.
Dahl as a LHH OF that can cover all three slots would balance the LHH/RHH bench.
IF they add another bat like Profar (he would get a lot of playing time as the 10th man) … only one slot remains open … and not going to play much for that 13th player … might change the criteria for that player.
Dahl is the only of this group, depending on his ST performance that should even sniff being a bench player for a WS contender. I still think we need to fill the bench will real ML talent.
Gamel is a more productive version of Dahl, and I would prefer him for the first 20 games of the season to cover until the return of Tatis. And the other back up OF option opposite of Azocar.
Then I would sign either Profar or Hernandez as the final bench piece. They are similar in the fact they are both SH. While Profar is better in the OF, and Hernandez on the INF. But both can handle a few games in their weaker spots, so I would bring in who ever takes the lesser contract. IF the contract amount between Profar and Hernandez is close, $1-2M, then choose Profar do to the history with the team, and his teammates seem to really like him.
Tatis, Carpenter, Machado, Soto, Bogaerts, Crone, Kim, Grisham, Nola. With a bench of Gamel, Profar, Campusano, and Azocar.

Guessing they are are both pushing for a multi-year deals even at their ages (37-38) … getting that second (or third) guaranteed year would be a major success. Would even take a slightly lower AAV for the years.
With the pending FA of Darvish and Snell, I would not be upset with signing either Cueto or Kluber to a slightly lower AAV and giving them 2 years with a vesting option for a 3rd, similar to the deal just signed by Eovaldi.
I know they are not the same high caliber as Darvish and Snell, but they can provide innings, which SD will need in 24 and 25.

He is lefty.. extreme platoon bat BUT deep dive shows he hits LHSP at an .816 OPS clip (maybe a circumstance of 2nd or 3rd time through).. otherwise only .550ish OPS vs LHP overall.. career vs RHP .715ish.. part that fits in best is $$ likely around $1.8 for 2023.. and controlled beyond... Better lineup..defined role..can he come close to rookie yr .990 OPS?

Well, I have been honking for Cueto for about 2 weeks now, so you dont have to sell me.
Like I said, a two year deal with a health vesting option similar to Eovaldi. AAV around $12-13M, and I would think our rotation would look real good for 2023. Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Cueto, Martinez, and Lugo.

I was thinking about him too, although with Carpenter in tow, I dont know if there is room for him this season on SD.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 28, 2022, 8:57 amEverytime someone signs someone they have to DFA someone as most teams..maybe all are at 40..except for Padres.. perhaps another thing working in our favor (lowering costs) of remaining position players .. a guy like Voit or Smith can give you good production (20HRs .330ish OPS .430ish slg) at low cost likely as teams try to hold on to or see more value on the guy they need to DFA to include a signing..Pitching is different a bit cause experience SP is always needed.. But Good/Great BP arms seem to always be DFAd to accomodate..how we got Brad Hand and others..

Pass on O’Hearn who has been a well below average hitter since his debut season in 2018 … 1B only … has a $1.3MM estimated 2023 salary. With Carpenter being the 9th hitter (and 1B option) and both LHH really no reason to claim O’Hearn who is on 4 consecutive seasons of negative WAR.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2022, 9:27 amOne hurdle in signing a good player will be the challenge of giving him playing time … the agent will see that and not be eager to sign with the Padres unless other alternatives are exhausted or an severe over pay by the Padres.
Might sign one as a platoon with Carpenter and the flexibility to fill in at multiple positions to max playing time but unlikely to sign if going to be buried deep on the bench. From the Padres perspective if that is the case … why sign anyone over league minimum and go with the Dixon types.
