2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 21, 2022, 10:47 amQuote from MrPadre19 on December 21, 2022, 10:39 amOr trade Devers for some young exciting prospects their fans can get excited about before they lose him for nothing after this season like with Bogaerts.
BOS probably have painted themselves into a corner with Devers. Why would he stay after watching what they did to Betts and Bogaerts.
As much as I hate to say it, the LAD do it well. And a team such as BOS, in their market needed to be more like LAD. Spend big until your prospects are past "ready", and then start mixing them in, letting them learn from veterans. And then still mix in the right veterans.

I think that's what we are doing too.. Salas/King Jr/Merrill/Zavala /Salinas/others on their way up..the ladder... have the fixed costs of Tatis/Xander/Manny and maybe Soto.. 2 at the crossroads 2 entering their prime as the youth pushes the likes of Crone/Grish/Nola/Kim and others out..
Pitching wise.. BP is already sort of at this level... SP by 24-25 and 26 we will have a group of Wolfe/Brito/Cienfuegos/Williams/Lizarraga/Lesko/Mazur/Snelling/others... all claiming SP slots..some TORs in that group some mid rotation arms and some #5/#6 types...with Papa Joe anchoring it thru 2027...
We were probably ahead of the curve CJ/Gore/Hassell and Woods ..But then Soto became available...

To say it was an honor to put on the pinstripes last season would be the understatement of a lifetime. Memories I will never forget. To my teammates, coaches, front office, ownership and the great fan base of the New York Yankees. Thank you for letting me be a part of it..❤️

Quote from fenn68 on December 21, 2022, 11:06 amA big issue is that beyond owners … some cities will never support a baseball franchise at the level of the big guys / big cities … and a new ballpark will not help. (Talk to the folks in MIA).
I know MLB for the longest time pushed to move to FLA citing the weather, retirees, money in the state, population … all “ideal” to support a baseball franchise. That has never worked. Even when MIA was heading for the World Series they couldn’t fill the park. MLB under-estimated the love in FLA for football / college sports and the desire for retirees to spend heavily on baseball games.
OAK has a similar problem … a few years ago some organization did a survey by county on their favorite baseball team .. and OAK almost lost in OAK to BOST as I recall and the whole area when SF.
Bottom line is that there are cities that will never generate enough support (financially) to keep up consistently with the big cities. The structure is against them. Plus never going to find 30 Cohen / Siedler owners … Uber wealthy and willing to spend on a baseball team.
If we become really cold hearted … need to move out of those cities that consistently lack attendance while forcing an ownership change. Get out of TB, MIA, OAK, PITT, CLEV … well the list is longer than appealing cities to move to. So, instead of moving, fold some franchises (allows to divide up the national money to fewer clubs) thus creating more equality among the fewer rich teams (a bit elitist I know). Basically if the fan base has not supported the club with attendance for the past years (in the good and bad) … don’t deserve a ball club. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! VOTE THEM OFF THE ISLAND! (NEVER going to happen as it would be too costly for the surviving owners to buy the losers out)

Quote from BoosterSD on December 21, 2022, 11:10 amTo get back to SD baseball, I still think we need one more SP prior to the trade deadline, and a COF to protect SD from injury issues.
SP options to me are down to Kluber or Cueto, or a trade. If you prefer trade, actually reply with who you want and how you would get him.
Before looking at COF options, lets look at where our current roster is situated.
RHH we have Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts, Kim, Nola, Campusano, and Azocar. LHH we have Soto, Crone, Carpenter, and Grisham.
COF options are down to Conforto, Gamel, Myers, Profar, and maybe Grossman or Naquin. Still think a LHH option would be best, which would eliminate Myers. Although he and Profar offer value in the fact they can play on the dirt as well. Thinking dollar wise, it makes sense it getting Gamel and Myers for what might be the cost of Profar? Unless Conforto is realistic in his salary ask, and then he becomes the best option if healthy and not take to long to get acquainted with ML pitching after missing a season.
Or is their a trade that could be done for a better COF option?
So Kluber or Cueto, and Gamel, Myers, and Barnhart would be my final moves. Keeping Kim and prospects available for deadline moves.

Yep...that's why I say they may as well go ahead and trade him.
Why would he stay unless they really overpay him?
Plus Boras is his agent so.....
They would get a lot more for him now than at the deadline so i would approach him with a "good" extension offer and when he declines let it be known he's available.
Fans won't be happy...but imagine how much worse it will be at the deadline with a lesser return or even worse if he leaves for nothing.

There are always multiple issues in almost every baseball city. Stadiums, baseball fandom in general, baseball over other sports, migratory issues (fans moving to a different baseball city than there home team) and not changing allegiances, media market size, geographical issues, and in some cases....cheap ass owners.
There are more solutions for each of these problems, if the owners are willing to embrace a different way of ownership, but they have been happy with status quos, so you get what you get. Lets face it, with the cost of a franchise, each one of these owners are billionaires, and they make money, and they could fix this issue if they want to, they are happy with crying broke and people feeling bad for them.
SD has suffered from most if not all of these issues and now we have it good! I will ride our good tide, and enjoy it while it lasts.

Marlins to Monterrey, Mexico and A's to Mexico City.. they may out draw all 28 other teams... But expansion teams maybe better for that Market as teams can truly call the Monterrey Engineers and the Mexico City Aztecs their own...
I think Salt Lake Utah and Las Vegas NV would be good destinations (need dome stadiums ) cause it gets really hot there though..

We don't really "need" a guy who can play on the dirt but a guy that can at least play 1B would be ideal.
With 6 shortstops we have MI and 3B covered....which is why despite being RH I would prefer Myers.
