2023 offseason

Yes ouch; however, there are 3 WC spots in the playoffs. No team from the NL Central will make a WC, and I think only LAD or SD will from the NL West as WC teams. So the really would have to be bad, to miss out on 4 chances to get in, NL East Champs, or 1 of 3 WC spots.
Really seeing the NL playoff teams as the same as last season, with NYM and SD truly competing for their respective divisions.

We need to have both or the “have nots” will still be outgunned even if they spend $150.
Oakland still swept the NYY with a $31 mil payroll in 2022... just saying
And TB is a perennial contender with a bottom third sized payroll.
Just a bit worried about the growing gap between the upper 1/3rd and the lower 1/3rd making that low salary even more difficult to competed. Add the business model that suggest don’t spend on salaries if you are not a contender … work on the farm system … and spend (maybe) once you have the playoffs in sight.
Yes of course there are exceptions almost every year.
But,in general, the Playoffs are loaded with the higher payroll teams.
The TB model is MUCH harder to emulate than the "pay to win" model.
Just imagine if TB had a better stadium situation and were forced to at least spend to the floor...they may be unbeatable.
The Rays with a $200 mil payroll while doing everything else the same would be perennial WS contenders.(even more than they already are)

Hard to predict but yes,as it LOOKS right now,you could have 2 WC teams from the NL East and 1 from the NL West.

A team like AZ or even Brewers/Cards/Cubs could get hot ..and NYM can implode just saying..they didn't handle pressure well last season . SDP did.. Braves did . Etc...

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 21, 2022, 10:02 amAnyone feeling creative?
Kris Bryant LF/1B/DH ($27mil per) to Padres along with Rockies paying $15mil per to ease tax and penalties for the duration of contract..similar to Nomar)
Pomeranz to Twinkies ($$ relief)
Kepler + Zavala + Khner and Rosario to Rockies
Who says no?.. looks like a good gamble on better health by Bryant who can DH 50-60% of the time.. Healthy Bryant is potentially our Bryce Harper in 2023...
Rockies going nowhere in 2023

Look at BOS, hired away a high level TAM guy, and they are fluttering in mediocrity right now. So maybe, maybe not.

High tide lifts all ships. I'm sure some of those front office types were just barnacles.

That and they seem to be paring down the large contracts and I assume beginning to build through the system like TB does.
Takes more than a couple years to pull that off.

BOS probably needed to keep spending for a couple more years, to avoid this 2-3 season of blahdom that is pissing off Red Sox nation.

Or trade Devers for some young exciting prospects their fans can get excited about before they lose him for nothing after this season like with Bogaerts.
