Although he and Profar offer value in the fact they can play on the dirt as well. Thinking dollar wise, it makes sense it getting Gamel and Myers for what might be the cost of Profar? Unless Conforto is realistic in his salary ask, and then he becomes the best option if healthy and not take to long to get acquainted with ML pitching after missing a season.
Or is their a trade that could be done for a better COF option?
So Kluber or Cueto, and Gamel, Myers, and Barnhart would be my final moves. Keeping Kim and prospects available for deadline moves.
We don't really "need" a guy who can play on the dirt but a guy that can at least play 1B would be ideal.
With 6 shortstops we have MI and 3B covered....which is why despite being RH I would prefer Myers.
Profar came in as a SS .. lol
He can play 1B also so he'd be fine....but he's gonna get more from someone else as we don't have an everyday job for him anymore

Well Carpenter at 37 is not going to be a full time player and be effective over 162 games … has not been close to that much starting for some time. So, between splitting time with Carpenter and playing when one of the starting eight are out of the line-up, that 10th man (if versatile) could get enough PA to be “qualified” … should satisfy a Profar and potentially justify a larger payday from the Padres.
Still boils down to how much the Padres still want to spend and are the available players worth the demands … creating a mix and match between hitters and SP … and between going big for one add or split the money down for depth/insurance. Add that some of the targets prefer other teams all things being equal.
Preller will be nimble and shift priorities as the market moves.
I guess I am in the camp of WANTING to upgrade but don’t NEED to upgrade at this moment. For me the #1 want is an OF/1B that we can be comfortable with being a full time starter if we lose someone to injury for an extended period … the current falloff from the first nine is huge and unacceptable. So, probably would aim for the best option available … that appears to be among Myers, Profar, and maybe Conforto (highest upside / highest risk). Put money there. Yes, another SP of middle rotation quality would be great but more than likely the remaining FA are not that (except Eovaldi whose price could get the Padres both a bat and an arm) and the array of internal options are at least serviceable depth (unlike hitters).
Wouldn’t do a trade from the ML roster or the top prospects … Padres are too thin to move from that set. Maybe a mid-tier prospect or an “excess” RP for a short control / high cost player from a non-contender.

Depending on cost of course I still think I would prefer Myers as that guy.
I really like his defense at 1B and despite his recent "unsuccess" I still think he has another season like 2020 in him whereas Profar just showed us what is most likely his best production possible.
IMO AJ is working the trade market for a SP upgrade.
The fact he gave Martinez and Lugo incentives for both starting and relieving makes me think he did so because he's still going to try for that #2-#3 Starter for now and the next few seasons.
There's no way he is going to go into next off season with just Musgrove and Martinez under contract as starters.
There are a lot of starters due to be free agents after this season but trying to sign three would be way too expensive...esp. considering the Manny and Soto dilemmas approaching.

I would be fine with Myers for that 10th man over Profar. Probably lower cost maybe allowing a bit more to add another minor bench upgrade.
As you can tell, for the Padres as a contender, I have zero faith in Sullivan, Dixon, Batten, Rosario, Azocar, and any of the non-roster options to step in and cover rest/injuries in 2023.

I am finding myself quite happy with the signing of Matt Carpenter. His resurgence last season seemed to be year-long, and he has said and done all the right things in the days since he signed to make me a big believer in his clubhouse presence. Drury never seemed to bring much in that regard at all.
That said, agreed with others that we still need to address bench and rotation depth. At this point it feels as though we'll be targeting additional minor league deals for a "strength in numbers" approach to finding quality bench additions. It also feels incredibly likely that we are focusing almost exclusively on trades for the rotation. A Cueto or a Kluber might be a fallback option, but I'm not convinced either bring the quality or durability a title contender will need for rotation depth.

Don't expect 162 games from Carpenter ..mote like 80 or so.. he is a HUGE bench upgrade but not a 162 game player at all... 80 games 350PAs or so seems right.. I am fine with ONE of Dahl/Dixon/Rosario/Batten on the 26 + Campy (unless Severino beats em all in ST)

For selfish reasons if = $$ Profar + Voit would be fine with me.. Love the moss meme.. and the > Power

How about we try "BroBIs" again but this time, Latin style! Trade for Lourdes Gurriel Jr, and sign FA Yuri Gurriel? LGJ covers the OF need, and Yuri covers the 1B need. LG Jr is under contract through 2024, $5.8M this season, and his brother should be cheaper.

Not interested in Yuli, but I was just playing around with the idea of trading Pomeranz and a prospect for Lourdes on that trade simulator. I think it could make sense for both sides.

Lourdes is like a $5 mil per Profar.. cheaper than, can play COF/DH and 1B.. to be fair Lourdes is > at the plate and more consistent.. Profar > Defense.. But Lourdes fits perfect into our lineup
