2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 21, 2022, 8:21 amQuote from fenn68 on December 21, 2022, 8:00 amWhat is the appeal of a 34 year old Escobar who is an INF (3B these days) and last season was about “average” as a hitter 240/295/430 getting paid $9.5MM. Kim is about the same as a hitter and much better defensively at 2B? No upside for the Padres.
If I am using trade chips (money or players) it will be for an OF. If they want to spend $9.5MM just resign Profar or Myers and not give up a player only to have to replace the player to complete the roster.
On the Pomeranz thought, if he is healthy his value to the Padres coming out of the pen is greater than Escobar’s incremental value to the offense. If he is not (or even an unknown), not getting a trade partner.
The value to SD would be keeping Crone at 2B, and moving Escobar to 1B, as long as he could handle it, and I think he can. Leaving Kim open to trade for your OFer. And in my head, the trade with NYM includes getting Carrasco as well, helps our SP, Kim trade helps OF, and our bull pen is fine without Pomeranz. And Escobar in 24 can go back to 3B IF Machado opts out.
Or maybe SD includes a prospect or two and gets either Baty or Vientos, and they part of SD INF picture for the next 5-6 years.
A lot of moving pieces, but nothing Preller couldnt pull off.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 21, 2022, 8:21 amBut without a cap(and a floor) even if smaller market teams start spending the Big Boys will just do what Cohen and the Mets have done.
We need to have both or the “have nots” will still be outgunned even if they spend $150.

Quote from fenn68 on December 21, 2022, 8:21 amQuote from MrPadre19 on December 21, 2022, 7:42 amThis offseason,between small market San Diego and large market NYM,could be the kicker to get MLB talking about a hard cap.
Small market teams can't be happy with Seidler spending with the large markets proving you can if you want too.
If I were a Pirate or Marlin fan i think I'd have to resist attending any games until the owner at least tries to field a competitive team.
As long as they are selling tickets these cheap owners won't change.
Owners generally have always wanted a salary cap (and a low one) … getting the Union to agree is nearly impossible. Union has to be jumping for joy that Cohen and Siedler are blowing off the high side of payrolls and pulling up the pay for mid-range players.
Academic until the next CBA … but if it is an issue … be prepared for a LONG work stoppage.
================
Ticket sales are a part of the income but these days the equally distributed national money (e.g. TV) and revenue sharing does a lot to give the smaller market teams money.
On the other hand, all 30 ownership groups are created differently. The Cohen and Siedler are coming in from big money in their private businesses and have maybe a bit more unilateral flexibility to take cash flow losses to long term profit. Some other ownership groups may need more consensus and can (or will) not take cash flow losses.
Frankly the NYM, NYY, LAD will out spend the pack to win since they have the deeper pockets.
==========
MLB will never get to the NFL model which eliminates the TV local money (big in NY and LA) and all media is national pool divided equally … more equal a starting point and a cap. Competition is more aligned with management competence … that is never equal.

Oakland still swept the NYY with a $31 mil payroll in 2022... just saying
I think a Floor of $150 benefits baseball and players alike more than a Hard Cap to be honest... a $150 floor would have ALL teams involved in the Correa's or Devers or Xander's of the world..as most low spenders would still have the payroll flex to add 1 or 2 $25+ per yr player...not having a Floor creates $31 mil payrolls like A's in 2022 which hurts the game as in 5-10 teams are auto "no chance at all" every season

And TB is a perennial contender with a bottom third sized payroll.
Just a bit worried about the growing gap between the upper 1/3rd and the lower 1/3rd making that low salary even more difficult to competed. Add the business model that suggest don’t spend on salaries if you are not a contender … work on the farm system … and spend (maybe) once you have the playoffs in sight.

It all begins with Marketing and getting butts on the stands... more marketing success more butts..more merchandise.. more subscriptions to MLB TV streams..more more more... Marlins draw a little better than Lake Elsinore (Pads A ball)...who probably has better merchandise sales (lol) funny but not funny.. Hell when the Savanah Bananas out draw 5 or so MLB teams season after season .. some of these ownershio/or marketing departments need a review...

Another benefit to a floor is that it may push "poor" owners (*cough* A's) to sell and a better backed owner or group to purchase the team.

Some teams are simply in bad stadiums, in not good cities for them. TAM is stuck in a bad dome, and is a NYY town, with them doing ST there for so long. And you would think that OAK would pull their heads out of their arses, and get a new ball park done, before losing the A's like losing the Raiders. However, there are many cities that would love to have a MLB team, and if that gets done, then maybe some of this situation fixes itself.
Who knows with PIT though, devoted city, great ball park, and great fan base.

I hope not. I would have to get abdominal surgery from the damage resulting from sustained uncontrollable laughter.
