2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 21, 2022, 7:37 amQuote from BoosterSD on December 21, 2022, 6:58 amWith Correa going to the NYM, I would say the trade door is open in Queens. You would figure that with Lindor at SS (not moving), and Correa at 3B now, that not only displaces last seasons starter in Eduardo Escobar, it also blocks at their natural position two of NYM top 7 prospects in Baty and Vientos.
Escobar is under contract this season for $9.5M and a team option for the same amount in 2024. He is a SH that can play 3B, 2B, and SS and a couple of games at 1B. All 3 could be a smart move should we lose Machado, or could also help in LF or 1B, depending on which one we could acquire.
Maybe there is a way to expand the deal, or make it a 3 team special where SD ends up with Carrasco and one of the 3, ATL or MIN gets Kim, and the NYM end up with some prospects in positions of more need for them???
Send them Pomz who is healthyband throwing atm should be able to pass his physical.. for Escobar and Vientos...
Escobar also has about = the experience Matt Carpenter has in the OF (but exclusively in LF).. so Escobar and Kim can 2B/3B/SS (Kim)/DH/LF (Escobar) bases on matchups
Vientos 1B/DH .. not much playing time (thunk Azocar 210 PAs 2022) battles Dixon for last spot on 26... Dixon fits better as spare tire ..Vientos to AAA to further develop.. will be called up 💯 when we deal with various minor injuries... takes 1B/DH role (if he continues his upward trend) in 2024...
Then sign Zach Davies.. he will give us Eovaldi IP and close to same ERA in SD at 20% or less the cost..(not the upside TOR of Eovaldi) but the loss of velo and shoulder concerns in 2022 make me say "stay away" from Eovaldi even though I like him a lot.. we don't need a Strasburgh 2.0 situation...

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 21, 2022, 7:42 amThis offseason, between small market San Diego and large market NYM,could be the kicker to get MLB talking about a hard cap.
Small market teams can't be happy with Seidler spending with the large markets proving you can if you want too.
If I were a Pirate or Marlin fan i think I'd have to resist attending any games until the owner at least tries to field a competitive team.
As long as they are selling tickets these cheap owners won't change.

Is it? 1.2 WAR Escobar .. and a Rosario like spec but 1B/DH type... for one of the best 5 Relievers in baseball when healthy.. YES..

We The Fans gave Siedler the green light.. drawing close to 3 million in 2022 = sustainable $300mil without losing $$ and team value jumps +$500mil or so above $3-$4Billion current value.. in fact 2023 should draw >3,000,000 + all the extras and perhaps a bigger National Sponsors foot print $$$.. think Siedler and partners still make $60-$75 mil profit after $100 mil + in 2022...
* whomever signs Othani next yr will also get a windfall of $200 or so Million ..yearly..or so... why he is not only affordable but profitable as an add....
Padres could "not sign/extend" Othani ..BUT acquire him at the deadline and get almost the same +$200mil windfall should they make 2023 their WS yrs... even for 2-3 months of Othani.. which is why his name has a big cross hair target a top my deadline wish list... he is 💯 the catalyst of everything gors as plan the 1st half

Quote from fenn68 on December 21, 2022, 8:00 amWhat is the appeal of a 34 year old Escobar who is an INF (3B these days) and last season was about “average” as a hitter 240/295/430 getting paid $9.5MM. Kim is about the same as a hitter and much better defensively at 2B? No upside for the Padres.
If I am using trade chips (money or players) it will be for an OF. If they want to spend $9.5MM just resign Profar or Myers and not give up a player only to have to replace the player to complete the roster.
On the Pomeranz thought, if he is healthy his value to the Padres coming out of the pen is greater than Escobar’s incremental value to the offense. If he is not (or even an unknown), not getting a trade partner.

? If Pomz is "cleared" passes physical as he has and is ramping up his throwing as he is currently without issue.. is his value "highish" atm.. will it be higher after a ST inning where he strikes out the side ? ..
I mean at this point Eovaldi lost velo, shoulder issues... vs an offseason workout warrior cleared medically from a surgery that is supposed to keep him healthier going foward..and last 2 seasons pitched ..went 1.45 ERA and 1.75 ERA... I think keeping him is the way... but if I am moving him I need something like Escobar or Keppler and a solid (not top) spec like Vientos...

I am sure those talks are being held somewhere between some owners. Although, IF small media market SD (#27 I believe) can do it, they all really can.
Any talk of a hard cap, would also come with a hard floor as well. And I would still be ok with a hard cap/floor system, giving GMs like Preller, really good at scouting an advantage IMO.

They have a 40yr old + ACE who is Kershaw worst in the post season.. They lost the best SP in baseball to the Rangers.. and one of their unsung BP arms to San Diego.. before Correa they were about even or a bit worse vs 2022.. and we beat them
So Correa = Improvement for 2023 Mets
BUT
Padres + Xander + Tatis + better 4/5 SP + better Bench
It's San Diego who is the team to beat...BUT shhhhh we like the under dog role.
. We Ride! LFGXD!
