Not sure Merrill will be “blocked” when he arrives … Kim (2 years) and Cronenworth (3 years) would likely be traded to make room for a talent such as Merrill who most likely will be 2 years more in the minors. Then maybe sooner if Machado opts out and does not return.

I will skip the trade route NOW and opt for one of Kluber / Wacha / Cueto to start 2023 … buy time to see if any Morejon or the AAA gang prove worthy then decide on a move at the trade deadline.

In 2 years, Bogaerts will need to move off SS and slide to 2B, Tatis can move back to SS, youve stated many times now, Seidler wont get out bid for resigning Machado, and we will sign Devers for 1B next season ;-). So yes, I can see Merrill being "blocked".

And with the all in this season, maybe getting a young stud SP for the full season might be a good idea.

Can create scenario to block Merrill … point is they don’t exist today. Planning on the Padres signing Devers … re-signing Soto … adding a better long term bat for the 9th hitter along with retaining Kim (in 2 years) and Cronenworth / Grisham (3 years) … all that with no other internal hitters near Merrill coming in that 2-3 year timeframe just not going to happen.

Agree that a high probability Machado is extended but don’t see Tatis ever returning to SS … more likely CF if moved off a corner. Move Tatis out of the OF and in 2025 the OF is likely to be like Death Valley with no life.

I see the more likely scenario is Kim moving on after 2024 to accommodate Bogaerts to 2B and Merrill at SS. Kim, as a FA plus SS, will be up for a very good long term deal (given his age) and at the same time dealing with trying deal with the Soto FA. Alternatively, Padres do re-sign Kim but move Cronenworth (in his 30s) and send Bogaerts to 1B.

Being money focused … re-signing Darvish / Snell after 2023 and Soto / Kim after 2024 while upgrading the bottom of the rotation / 9th hitter … or find an equivalent replacements is going to be backbreaking expensive already necessitating internal players to take slots at league minimum …internal players that don’t exist except for Merrill in the short run. Then after 2025 having to re-sign or replace Grisham / Cronenworth just compounds the problem.

Since I think the Padres are already built to secure a playoff slot (better if they sign one a Kluber type SP and a Gamel type hitter) … would not make move until the trade deadline when I have a better idea what the greatest need is to propel the club to WS quality … rentals can be very good at a bargain price for an organization that has minimal prospect trade chips.

Side: in isolation I normally go for the elite position player over an elite pitcher since lesser chance of injury and a better chance of longevity. Seems as though Preller is operating the same way considering the money deployed to Bogaerts, Machado, Tatis, Soto (prospects in trade) but not so much for pitchers except for the extension for Musgrove.

Yup and all the guys (sans Tatis) are like 150 games a yr dudes

The NYY signing of Rodon potentially opens another avenue to improve the Padres pitching. Looking as though their starting 5 is pushing Clarke Schmidt back to AAA. Schmidt (26) was a Top 100 prospect (former 1st round pick) who has been effective in short ML runs mainly in the pen but is (has been) a quality SP in the minors. Not much left to prove in AAA so should be a good target.

Problem is that the primary targets for the NYY is a LHH LF (not something the Padres can offer) and a ML SS to fill in until their top prospect is ready (as soon as 2024).

So, not in a 1 for 1 deal … but would you deal Kim (save $7MM … keep Cronenworth at 2B … add that $7MM to whatever they planned to upgrade 1B/9th hitter/SP)? Need more back than Schmidt but he is league minimum with 5 years control and “could” factor in the 2023 SP depth … plus the NYY have a deep farm system.

Now I really like Kim but Bogaerts / Cronenworth put him in play with only two years control and a $7MM salary. Get a pitcher for the now and the future and potentially improve offense by adding LHH options with the money freed up?

Would that strategy improve the 2023 team and beyond?

Could always get a 3rd team involved with NYY... or offer someone down the line that NYY could develop..Schmidt for Lizarraga type deal..  IF AJP thinks he can be a solid SP like Victor could circa 2025..

I am not sure of the prospects in the NYY system, but is there the possibility of expanding the deal to include Grisham and Kim. Getting back Schmidt and a close to ready ML OF or 1B prospect?

I'd probably just sign a P (Wacha/Kubler/Davies) and ride to the deadline ... anyone with a sub 4.50 would be a good get and who knows Teheran/Groome or other could emerge as well... But if Othani is at play at the Deadline..LAA are 4th best in their division.. Astros/Mariners/Rangers... KIM makes a ton of sense for them (large Korean population in OC) and AS caliber SS cheap... for a new owner and a great get for a player who will not resign with LAA...

NYY #5 spec should be ready for MLB

Another solid Depth signing... for AAA...

Seems like Preller is really focusing on AAA (MLB depth) a lot more this year.. better quality...

Our 2026 opening day lineup if everything falls in line

C-Salas (rookie)

1B- Mortarela

2B Xander

SS Merrill

3B Manny

LF Soto

CF Zavala

RF Tatis

DH Doersching

SP - Yu (final yr of 3yr extension)/Musgrove/Muzr/Lizarraga/Lesko (rookie)/Snelling (rookie)

Sign me up

It may be a bit aggressive (and optimistic) but outside chance a few of the ACL Padres will be pushing into that line-up ... maybe impacting the positions and possible better than Doershing and Mortarela offensively.

  1. Montesino (18) much hyped LHH when signed injured last season OF/1B
  2. Murillo (19) 3B/OF
  3. Salinas (19) CF
  4. Verdugo (17) INF

All could be in low A LE this year and IF they (or at least one) match the hype ... 23-24-25 to cover the four minor league levels ... would have them on the cusp of 2026 in the ML.
