Another solid Depth signing... for AAA...

and it continues:

Padres signed RHP Raul Brito to a minor league contract.

The 25-year-old hurler has never pitched above High-A ball, but the Padres will give him an opportunity after seeing something they liked. Brito posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 55/18 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings at High-A Beloit in the Marlins organization in 2022.

It may be a bit aggressive (and optimistic) but outside chance a few of the ACL Padres will be pushing into that line-up ... maybe impacting the positions and possible better than Doershing and Mortarela offensively.

  1. Montesino (18) much hyped LHH when signed injured last season OF/1B
  2. Murillo (19) 3B/OF
  3. Salinas (19) CF
  4. Verdugo (17) INF

All could be in low A LE this year and IF they (or at least one) match the hype ... 23-24-25 to cover the four minor league levels ... would have them on the cusp of 2026 in the ML.

Mears too.. Howell?? There are a few guys that can have a RUIZ (2022 moment) and become topbof the food chain.. Mears near 50% K ..all he has to do is cut it to near 40% and he would look a lot better.. mid 30's and potential super star as a 30 HR CF'er

Take it he goes to AA... Brito/Wolf.. a couple to keep an eye on as potential "pushers" up the Depth Charts... Lizarraga at A+

LOAD up on arms.. to bridge the 2 yr gap.. get lucky and find a gem = BONUS

Bringing this back to 2023, and winning a World Series, SD is rumored to be looking for an OFer. Many of us prefer LH. And Reynolds (SH) has requested a trade out of PIT. Now, PIT has said they are not going to trade him, but would it behoove SD to go in and "overpay" and convince PIT to send Reynolds to SD?

PIT is rumored to want a "Soto" type return, but we also got Bell in that trade, where we sent Voit and 5 MiL to WAS. So lets say that 4 of them were for Soto. Abrams was ML ready, and then the balance was highly regarded prospects.

Would Campusano, Merrill, Zavala, and Lesko work for both sides? PIT top prospect according to MLB.com is a C, so they may not have interest in Campusano. But maybe they want his bat for DH/1B. Maybe add Weathers if they want a SP for the next few seasons.

I wouldn't do that... Pitt players lose their POP at Petco (Giles) .. Not sure Reynolds is anywhere near Soto (age/talent/track record)... Rather sign Beni/Peralta/Comforto or Brantley to be honest..

As far as Giles is concerned, Petco has changed since it opened almost 19 years ago. Im sure Reynolds wont have an issue in Petco.

None of those guys are on the same level as Reynolds and Reynolds contract is under $7M per season for the next two years, and Reynolds has another year of control after that.

Benintendi doesnt have Reynolds power or defense, and will want $15M+ per season.

Peralta is a platoon player at best at this time.

Conforto IF healthy hasnt played in 1.5 years, and with Boras as his agent, is going to want a stupid sized contract for 1 year, $12M +.

And Brantley IF healthy, is mostly regulated to DH and maybe 1B, and will still be over the $10M mark for the season.

Yes Soto's bat is better and he is younger, but Reynolds defense is better, and a SH CFer.

Reynolds is a bargain for those prospects IMO, if SD wins it all.

Reynolds is a solid player but he is no superstar. I would absolutely not clean out the farm for him. If we were going to make that type of move I'd go find a stud young SP.

That's one of the more realistic proposals that has been thrown out here lately imo. We know AJ has tried to get Reynolds before. I could see him making a move like that to get his guy if PIT was open to it.

Just for reference when it comes to Reynolds and the 2022 Padres team that made the NLCS.

2022 BA of .262 (down 20 points from his career numbers) would rank 3rd, behind Machado and Hosmer (real hot start).

2022 OBP of .345 (down 20 points from his career numbers) would rank 3rd, behind Machado and Soto.

2022 SLG of .461 (down 20 points from his career numbers) would rank 3rd behind Machado and Voit.

Plus his 27 HRs and OPS and OPS+, would have all been 2nd on last years team. He can play all 3 OF positions and is a switch hitter all for $6.75M per season, and controlled for 3 more seasons, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

I agree that he would have been awesome last year on the team but, IMO, the greater need right now is in the rotation.
