2023 offseason

PreviousPage 173 of 376Next

At less than 25.5M per year, this is a good contract even though everyone knows he won't be productive in the last few years of it, but by that time 25M may be a journeyman's pay.  This also gives a back-up plan if Machado opts out and we can't match his demands.  It also gives us time to see what Soto is going to do as a Padre in 2023 and whether the decision is going to be Machado or Soto or Machado and Soto.  Getting greedy but still need another LHB in the line-up to balance a predominately RH hitting line-up.

And still waiting for Senga - hope that announcement is coming soon!

According to Acee, the deal is actually 11/275, so an even $25m per year. That would almost feel reasonable if we weren't paying him through his age 41 season. Wow, what a contract.

Of course Acee was wrong (kind of). Now he'd saying 11/280, which includes a $6m signing bonus.

When Preller gets going, it's like blood in the water!  Multiple transactions in the course of a week or less.  With Xander providing a big bat, look for that splash in pitching, likely Senga, but they could really surprise and land Rodon.   I'm thinking the other bench pieces will fill in nicely over time, whether it's Brantley, Myers, Gallo, Reyes, etc.  Hopefully, we don't end up trading either Merrill or Zavala - we need to have some position player prospects in our minors and both could be ready as soon as 2 years from now - they will be challenged and likely will be one of the youngest in their league.

Nimmo or Benintendi, however, would be good at the top of the order and move everyone down a notch.  Something like Tatis, Nimmo, Machado, Soto, Boegarts, Cronenworth, Kim, Grisham and Nola.  That looks like a very competitive line-up and guys can be swapped out to DH along with platoon/bench pieces.

Nonetheless, the focus has to be on SP's and one, possibly two dependable veterans, would make this team very very strong.

Is it now that AJ puts together a package and gets ANOTHER bat? Kim, Cronenworth, Campusano, Knehr, Rosario, Weathers, Groome, .....all guys expected to contribute at the MLB level next year.

Anyone not yet mentioned( outside of Reynolds, Smith) that could be on the block? Any team looking to trim payroll? Any vets coming to end of their contracts?

Oof, not sure about this deal.  That’s a lot of money for a guy with bad home/away splits.  Afraid he will be an overpaid second baseman by year five.

Believe he turns 41 in Oct “after” his final season….so through his 40 yr season.

To be precise.

😉

Bogaerts adds so much to the offense … think the next move has to be a SP and worry less about another bat. Padres can be sitting with the eight field positions filled on a daily basis and only the DH slot open and that can (should) be used as rotational suggesting the next adds should be players who can play a field spot OF/INF.

It will be interesting to see the batting order since Bogaerts - Soto - Machado - Tatis all can claim success in the #3-4 spots.

Wonder if they consider Bogaerts for the lead-off slot (always was a #3-4) … good OBP and less power than the others but not great speed. The other choice may be Tatis in the lead-off slot with his speed (especially with the new rules). Tatis could steal 70 bases and create havoc with the pitcher’s concentration against the next batter plus without the shift could be large holes on the right side of the INF. Bogaerts is primarily a ground ball hitter.

Maybe: Tatis - Bogaerts - Soto (L) - Machado - Cronenworth (L) - Kim - Nola/Campusano - Grisham (L) - DH TBD.

At this point don’t see a problem carrying a light hitting Grisham for his defense in CF and hoping for an offensive rebound to the low .200 BA given his less than $3MM salary. As it stands that 9th spot in the order is a battle between Azocar and Dahl (L) as OF bench / Dixon and Rosario as INF bench …not thinking Batten or Sullivan as factors.

I just pray that AJ’s relentless pursuit of a Shortstop is solely based on the fact that those were the best bats available and doesn’t have anything to do with Tatis’s health.

I’m guessing it was…..because we already had Kim at SS….but I still worry there’s something we aren’t being told about Nandos health.

This also makes certain that Tatis has been told he’s an outfielder/DH now.

What are the chances Xander plays 2b and Kim stays at SS?

X’s range is not that great.
