2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2022, 6:18 amNot sure how this may shape the next signings by the Padres but (baring unexpected injuries) the line-up is setting up to be pretty consistent. The biggest impact by be on how the bench is configured. Consider 2022 games played:
158. Cronenworth
153. Soto
152. Grisham
150. Kim
150. Machado
**** Tatis will play over 150 if healthy since he will not be platooned.
110. Nola (leaving 52 starts for Campusano behind the plate)
So, need a 1B and if that 1B is not a platoon type … the Padres have some interesting decisions on the DH/bench options …
1. If they use the DH as a “rest stop” for the 8 position players … the bench adds need to be OF/INF types
2. If they make those adds lower end, maybe they can go with players who are defensive oriented (the other 8 carry the offense) and maybe more platoon type hitters who because of that limitation .. lower cost
3. With potentially the eight position players paying most of the game … probably go with a bench that can handle not playing much of the time … not a good place for prospect. Someone like Rosario is better served in AAA and getting prepared as a call-up.
Azocar (OF) and Campusano (C) look to be two of the five bench … then we may be waiting to scoop up the unsigned (getting worried) veterans in late January / early Feb.
IF the Padres really see upside in Campusano’s bat … a Nola / Campusano C/DH rotation could take a lot of pressure of filling those other bench options. Maybe also justified carrying a third catcher for emergency use only.

Agree … but not because he is being taken out of the line-up for performance reasons … it will be due to injury. Now when and for how long will he be out creates the problem with creating a back-up specifically for that.
Sort of supports the idea that next adds need to have some flexibility in regards to field positions. Doubt may good options will sign with the possibility of playing only if injury to Tatis … and even if flexible still limited playing time subbing for the others.
Adds to the idea of a signing more like Myers / Gamel types over Bell / Voit types … that opens up options to mid-season adds by not being forced into seeking a corner OF … 1B types may be easier to pick-up at a lower cost.

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2022, 7:56 amGiven the landscape of 1B on the FA market (or other position players that would send Cronenworth to 1B) … and trying to balance production and cost … resigning Wil Myers for 1B is beginning to seem like a feasible path.
Over the past 3 seasons, Myers had a better wRC+ than Josh Bell and was much better defensively. Not much better 1B on the market. With Bell, at a minimum, targeting a 3 year deal at $13MM AAV (but expect more with Boras as his agent). Myers also adds that flexibility if needed for the OF and about a 15% better than average offense.
Myers is not getting a lot of play, so far, as a FA … might get him to return on a favorable contract (a lot less than Bell and his equals) … plus I like watching him.
Set him in at 1B … then add Gamel (or similar) as a LHH option for DH/OF … should be low cost as a poor defensive OF with limited power … and struggles with LHP. However, he as been a “just below” average wRC+. Padres need a LHH option to platoon as DH and he becomes insurance in the OF if needed.
In comparison that duo should be economical freeing up more money for a quality SP add. Plus they would lengthen the line-up taking some pressure off the big 3.

Padres have met with top free-agent shortstop Trea Turner twice ahead of Winter Meetings
<img src="data:;base64," alt="" aria-hidden="true" data-airgap-id="79" />By Dennis Lin and Ken RosenthalSAN DIEGO — The Padres have met with free-agent shortstop Trea Turner twice in person before next week’s Winter Meetings in San Diego, major-league sources told The Athletic, signaling that an unexpected suitor has a legitimate interest in signing a player who could command this offseason’s second-largest contract. It’s unclear exactly when and where the Padres sat down with Turner, though those conversations did not take place in San Diego, sources said. But the fact that there have been multiple meetings suggests some level of mutual interest. Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Whether the Padres can outbid other teams with clearer needs at shortstop remains to be seen. San Diego, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday, also has expressed interest in another top free agent, Xander Bogaerts. Bogaerts is expected to land a deal approaching or exceeding $200 million. But Turner, a candidate for possibly $300 million, appears to be the Padres’ preference.
The Padres already have two shortstops in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim, two $300 million players in Tatis and Manny Machado, and more obvious positional needs they could address with significantly less capital. Meanwhile, several other clubs are firmly in the market for a marquee free-agent shortstop. According to The Athletic’s Jayson Stark, for instance, the Phillies have scheduled meetings with Turner, Bogaerts, Carlos Correa and Dansby Swanson.
The Padres, however, cannot be ruled out as a factor. Under Preller and owner Peter Seidler, they have consistently shown a willingness to spend, signing Machado, Tatis and Eric Hosmer to nine-figure contracts. A potential deal with Turner would simply be the latest example.
San Diego traded Turner to Washington in 2015 — team officials questioned whether the then-prospect possessed the tools to develop into a solid shortstop on either side of the ball — but with Turner now an established superstar, they have indicated a notable interest in a potential reunion in recent years. Last summer, they attempted to acquire Turner and ace pitcher Max Scherzer, only to see the Nationals opt instead for the Dodgers’ package of young talent.
Like Bogaerts, Turner could indirectly help the Padres fill other needs — say, by moving Tatis to the outfield, Kim to second base and Jake Cronenworth to first base. Turner also offers more defensive flexibility than Bogaerts or any other available shortstop. Moreover, landing any of the high-profile options at a position populated by versatile athletes could serve as a form of insurance.
Tatis is recovering from multiple wrist surgeries and a shoulder operation, Machado can opt out of his contract after the 2023 season, next offseason’s free-agent class appears relatively thin, and outfielder Juan Soto can reach free agency after the 2024 campaign. The Padres intend to keep Machado and Soto for years to come, but no one would be surprised if Soto, in particular, ends up testing the open market, where many believe he would be in line for a record-setting contract.
The right fielder, in the meantime, could be one selling point as the Padres pursue another star. Turner, who spent parts of four seasons alongside Soto in Washington, has publicly singled out his former teammate as someone he would enjoy playing with again. Still, the Padres could face certain challenges in their efforts to woo Turner. Some league sources believe the Florida native would prefer to play on or closer to the East Coast. The Phillies are widely seen as the favorites to land Turner, though they are looking at other shortstops, too.
To be sure, there are cleaner fits than San Diego, which still needs another starting pitcher even as it is closing in on the lowest luxury-tax threshold of $233 million. Signing any of the top free-agent shortstops likely would take the Padres — who incurred the tax in each of the past two seasons — beyond the second threshold of $253 million, triggering a 62 percent overage tax on any spending past the first threshold. Turner and Bogaerts each declined a qualifying offer, so either player additionally would cost Preller two draft picks and $1 million in international bonus pool money.
In the end, the Padres, who offered José Abreu a three-year deal before Abreu chose the Astros, could very well settle for a less expensive option at first base and decide the shortstop market is too rich for them, especially since they already have two shortstops. But as the Padres prepare to host the Winter Meetings in their home city, no one doubts that Preller would like to attempt another splash. The team’s conversations with Turner are more evidence of that.

Quote from WindsorUK on December 3, 2022, 10:28 amTurner has been at the top of my list since last summer( one, he's a top 20 player in MLB, and 2, because we should have never traded him in the first place!)
He'd be a HUGE get( or should I say, get back?) for AJ. Great hitter, great speed, perfect guy( and probably the only guy!)to supplant FTJ in the lead off role. He'll play 2B with Jake sliding over to 1B- SS at every infield spot( that defense makes average pitchers, good pitchers so no need spending $20-30 million on FA pitcher. Go out and get Davies!)
If he comes off the board to SD, that certainly makes Kim more appealing to someone in the SS market.
A win win for the Pads.
