I also think we are underrating Kim. He's already a valuable player and with another modest offensive gain he could be elite. Outside of Petco he was fairly comparable to Dansby Swanson. With his work ethic I think he keeps getting better and becomes a similar player.

I dont know if WE are underrating Kim, I think that trade simulator does. In 2021, Kim was roughly a 2.1 WAR player, and jumped to a 4.9 WAR in 2022. Im sure part of that was playing full time, and the other part was a big jump in BA and OBP, both went up about .50 points from 2021 to 2022. An AAV for the next two seasons of Kim $7M, for a high level glove, and improving bat is really a bargain. He should hold a lot of value to another team, IF SD wants to put him on the trade market. For instance, if BAL misses out on 1 of the 4 big SS, I could see for the money, BAL would have a lot of interest in Kim.

I think you are right, and Kim takes another step forward with his bat in 2023.

MIL and SEA make a trade today, Wong for Winkler and Toro (basically a Rosario type). Wonder if Winkler stays in MIL, or if they flip him for someone else.

Our old buddy Franchy Cordero signs with BAL for a split contract, $1.5M if on ML roster, and 450K if on MiL roster.

Padres claimed Sean Poppin off waivers from AZ. Curious pick-up even if they have room on the 40 man.

Poppin (28) is a RHRP (in the majors) with very limited time and not great success. One year of service time but out of minor league options. So he makes the 26 man or he is put on waivers by the Padre in ST.

I guess has some long shot upside (FB around 94-95 MPH and an 84 MPH slider) and in the minors was an effective SP through 2019 (AA/AAA). Maybe the Padres see that upside and think at the end of ST the can put him on waivers and have him clear and work with him in AAA.

Padres would have to trade (or get injured) a lot of pitchers ticketed for the 26 man roster to have him survive ST.

The first BIG signing is by TEX … DeGrom $185MM/5 years ($37MM AAV) with some options that could get it to $222MM.

Big talent … big injury risk at his age.

That should get the SP market moving.

Note that MLBTR predicted DeGrom signing for $135MM/3 years … so a lower AAV but two extra years netting a $50MM bigger total contract.

Yeah I agree, a really big risk. At least he doesnt sign with the LAD.

One of the Mets beat reporters is saying that the Mets will push hard for Verlander now. Maybe that keeps him from the Dodgers or at least drives the price up.

deGrom will be on the injured list at least once a year at minimum for the duration of this contract but as long as he isn't in the National League so the Padres don't have to face him other than the 3 games against the Rangers his upcoming season...I'm happy for him 😉

Appears the the AL WEST is entering a battle to take the division / wild card slots.

DeGrom (TEX) just got the largest contract of the season, so far

Abreu (HOU) has the third highest

Anderson (LAA) has the seventh

Wong traded to SEA

Tough to catch HOU but the playoffs are achievable … and expect all three to continue to add aggressively. Bet a lot of teams start circling OAK to pick the bones of a dying franchise.
