2023 offseason

Ask and ye shall receive … as I was posting MLBTR has dropped a long piece on Bogaerts including a link to the Padres.

I saw something that said that Disney made the final payment to finish acquiring some technology from MLB recently. It was for 900m split among the teams. Maybe Seidler is treating that 30m like found money.

The Machado issue … at least the fact that someone is thinking that … does open a can of worms surrounding his future. Machado will have remaining 5 years / $30MM AAV. He is one of the elite players who could be FA after the season and what this year’s FA get may have a lot of influence over his decision. Not only AAV but contract length. Good chance he wants more than 5 years guaranteed money so he does not have to hit FA in his mid/late 30s. So, good chance Machado does opt out if he has a good season and likely the Padres do not want to be put in the position of covering his departure while trying to contend in 2024. Not sure Machado’s willingness to extend without testing the market … not sure how much the Padres would go on extension basically bidding against themselves.

At least Machado is not a client of Boras, so the chance at an extension is better than if he was. If both parties are interested in that avenue.

First of all, I am not suggesting that I want to trade Crone. Just with the chatter that SD is looking at Bogaerts and adding 2+2 to get 5. This could entwine with what I just saw on MLBTR. Keep in mind, that IF SD was to sign Bogaerts he could take 2B this season, and IF Merrill was ready for 2024, he could slide to 3B in 24, should Machado depart after opting out.

Just read that SEA wants a LHH "SS" to play 2B that is cheaper and controlled longer than someone like Wong, sound like anyone we know?

IF SEA was to approach SD in trade talks for Crone, what would make it worth while for SD in pieces coming back. Keep in mind that both teams made the playoffs last season, and surely have desire to get back there in 2023, so it would have to be a "fair" trade for both, helping both teams meet the 2023 goal of playing into the playoffs.

I don’t see why the Padres would trade Cronenworth with his skills at only about $4-5MM salary. Just slide him to cover the hole at 1B where he will be way cheaper than an equivalent talent they could sign via FA. Plus even if the Padres add Bogaerts they still need to add another bat already.

I can see why Croney is a good fit for SEA who is trying to build offense … but the best they could (would) offer are prospects as a contender.

Like I said, just trying to read between the lines. Was just wondering if SEA had any AAA guys that are ready for the ML, that could fill holes for SD.

But with Dipoto and Preller, you never know, they could figure out a 3 team deal with SEA getting Crone, SD getting somebody like Reynolds, and PIT getting the SEA prospects.

But I agree with you, replacing Crone, especially with the dollars assigned to him, would be very difficult.

Just listen to a Keith Law interview and he is making it sound that Bell may be a difficult signing with Boras as his agent and the fact that Abreu landed that $60MM/3 yr deal.

Although Law thinks the Abreu contract was a vast overpay … Boras will use that as a market benchmark arguing Bell is a better player … younger, Abreu has declining stats but Bell has a better chance of holding is performance level over a 3-4 year deal.

Law basically is saying the Bell is the best (by far) 1B on the market. So if Abreu got a $60MM / 3 years … easy to conclude Boras / Bell will not settle for $39MM/3 years as many suggested.

Padres need a 1B and not much value on the FA market. Maybe they find a hitter at a different position and shift folks around to cover 1B … Croney is always a fall back but maybe a Brantley type COULD be signed and tried out at 1B with his fall back DH.

Not a lot of hitters (good hitters) out there … so in this market none will come in cheaply.

Let’s toss in another spin on adding a SS.

Maybe the Padres would consider trading Kim … SS are in demand and should get a better return than a 2B … plus only has 2 years control ($7MM and $8MM). Cronenworth has 3 years control via arbitration (est at $4.4MM, $6.6MM, $8.8MM), so more control and lower cost.

Kim is a legit defensive SS (Cronenworth not so much) and with 4 major SS likely changing teams … potentially four teams looking for replacement for a key position.

Could re-open Croney to 1B with Tatis landing in the INF … if finding an OF is a better option than finding a 1B in this market. Preller has a lot of way to go … and will have to explore all routes since many of his targets will go elsewhere.

Would you sign Bell at 5/$90M, $18M AAV? That would give Bell 50% more than Abreu.

Bell is a big boy. I don't think he will hold up for 5.
