Pirates adding token free agents to keep fan base from completely bailing on them.

Short term older players….it’s all just a ruse.

Not even remotely trying to win.

Plus helps keep the Players’ Union (and the League Office) off their backs for not spending the revenue sharing money while not even putting a minimal competent team on the field.

They do need to put a 26 man roster on the field and if they are AAA/AA types at league minimum … expect grievance by the union.

Side benefit to PITT … good chance they can deal these veterans at the trade deadline and maybe get a long shot prospect while shedding 1/3rd of the contract.

Given all the FA Preller is reported “interested in” … any chance the Padres FA signing is a player NOT rumored linked to Preller’s “interest”? Basically a lot of smokescreen / misdirection while targeting s “mystery player”? Might help keep the price down on the real target.

Saw a Cassavell piece on the potential SP for 2023. He did seem to suggest going with the 6 man rotation to start the year since it worked well in 2022 resulting in fresher arms for the second half. To that end he was suggesting signing two FA SP … one a strong middle of the rotation type and the second a more #5/6 type.

He did not address the money side of the equation nor the dollar impact of signing two SP while still needing to add to the offense.

Most agree on adding at least one SP and set up a top 5 of Darvish-Musgrove-Snell-TBD-Martinez … and I like the initial six man rotation to begin the season (and apparently so does Melvin). However, that begs the question on how the Padres view Groome - Morejon - Avila - Knehr for 2023 as potentially a 6th starter (maybe some combo of all three over the course of the season)?

Reports are they really like Morejon in that role but has not pitched the innings and has not been as effective as his stuff would lead us to expect. Groome is interesting … good season in AAA/AA with enough innings BUT does not rank all that high on the prospect rankings … scouts may not see what he has translating to the ML? Knehr is (and has been) ranked in most Padres top prospect lists … just has not delivered in the minors. Avila having been on / off / on the 40 man looks more a filler piece than regular starter.

Considering roster slots … allocation of payroll … available FA options for the #6 slot … and are any more reliable than the internal four options … does adding a second FA SP make sense?

I guess I am in the camp of go strong on one quality SP and one quality position player first then if nay monies left … consider lower end FA / prospects to upgrade the rest of the roster.

I agree if we get a strong #4…like Senga or even Quintana, I would be OK with the ST winner among Groome/Knehr/Morejon/Weathers as the #6 and would rather have a solid bat for 1b/DH than another fringe SP.

It all depends on what Seidler has said he’s willing to spend.

Guessing if they go for a quality SP and a quality position player ... that will be about an additional $30MM for the two ...that will thrust them into the second tier of CBT penalties with a $260MM CBT payroll ... that is pretty steep for almost any MLB team.

Senga is reported to want to sign with a contending "MAJOR MARKET" team ... NYY, NYM, LAD, CUBS as major market teams appear "interested" ... would this (IF TRUE) put the Padres in a position of overpaying to get him out of a Major Market choice? NYY, NYM, LAD all had better records than SD ... have the money to up bid ... If they are serious bidders will be hard for SD.

At some point SD needs to not chase Senga at any cost and pivot to the likes of Tallion / Walker / Quintana at a lower price point (money for other needs) and, in reality, with the unknown around Senga in MLB ... maybe not lesser 2023 production?

I think we are a national player now... maybe not a tradiobal Big Market team ..but 100% a Big MLB player..

Good chance Senga (viewing all this from a perspective of someone from Japan) he sees the “traditional” BIG MARKETS based on size / reputation / life style / maybe earnings power beyond the contract.

As an “outsider” … SD may be spending a ton but how often have they made the playoffs in the past decade + … barely made an expanded playoff in 2022. Compare that to 100 win teams in NY and LA. Yanks / Dodgers with long term reputations for success.

If a player is “big market” focused for his own personal reasons … SD will not fill that need. If a player is interested being on a contender regardless of market … then the Padres with their payroll options will play.

We just don’t really know Senga’s trade-off of size of the contract offsetting a major market / big city environment.
