2023 offseason
Quote from Randy Manese on November 20, 2022, 10:27 amL:et's say we sign Senga and our opening day roster number is 26 vice 28, the our pitching staff is likely Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Senga and Martinez as our starters - that makes 5. Bullpen, considering everyone is healthy, consists of Hader, Pomeranz, Hill and Castillo from the left side and Suarez, Garcia, Crismatt and Wilson from the right - that's 8 and fills out a 13 man staff. However, of this RP group, Crismatt (and Pomeranz in his younger, healthier days) is the only one that really has experience going multiple innings, so they may get overworked early if we are building up our starters slowly.
So if the plan is to put Morejon in AAA to begin the season (and has options), then Preller may not be done adding a veteran LH or RH bullpen piece that is a dependable multi-innings eater or to pick up as a long man for a SP that flares out after a couple innings. From the current staff, this could be Avila or Knehr or possibly Baez or Weathers, however, their inexperience/lack of recent minor league success makes me question that this would be Preller's strategy. Therefore, I'm looking for a veteran guy or guys who I can use as my bridge to the higher leverage RP's prior to reaching Hader or Suarez. To clear space for that to happen in the bullpen, I might consider trading Garcia and/or Hill, who are pretty much limited to one inning max. There are going to be a huge number of RP's out there and some may be reasonably priced to fill this role, since most teams are looking for high leverage/closer types vice efficient middle inning eaters. We shall see!

Quote from fenn68 on November 20, 2022, 11:02 amAlmost agree on the 13:
SP: Darvish; Musgrove; Snell; Senga (or similar); Martinez
Short RHRP: Suarez; Garcia; Wilson
Short LHRP: Hader; Pomeranz; Hill (thinking Pomeranz will be carefully handled even if he “appears” healthy
Long (5th/6th inning): Crismatt (R) leaving one spot if Morejon is in AAA.
The six “short” RP cover the 7-8-9 in every game without over working any one arm with multiple days consecutively. I think (for their price) the value of Garcia / Hill as part of the six pack is more than inserting an inexperience option.
Considering Melvin really likes to push his starters to complete 6 innings (not a quick trigger) probably not a big need for a multi inning guy. Don’t really need another LHRP for that role just someone effective for multiple innings.
Internally Knehr and Avila may be the leaders (assuming Groome is in AAA also being extended to be a SP call-up). Would not rule out a “minor” veteran signing.
Again as I suggested before … start the season with 6 SP (Rucinski the 6th?) using that one open slot … keeps innings down for every SP early so they are stronger later or has a staff that can better handle a SP injury. Some concern if the sign Senga … pitching is Japan is once a week so, potentially pushing him on a 5 man rotation could burn him out by mid-season (or render him less effective).

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 20, 2022, 11:12 amI will say one of Wethers/Avila or Groome will be 6th or 7th SP.. I can see all 3 getting Starts with days off early in the season Start 1 send down (10day min) bring up a BP arm.. send down bring SP #2 down after start B P arm up..and then ditto SP #3 .. and they can play this game for April/May/June.. if one of the SP gets hot...ride em
Probably wouldn't need a 6th til week 2 or 3 as per usual lots of off days early on..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 20, 2022, 11:17 amActually if we want 6th SP..4/4...4/11..4/17 and 4/23 would need 6th starter.. not as many days off as I thought early on

Quote from Notmyopic on November 20, 2022, 11:27 amI am intrigued by the idea of piggy backing Martinez and Morejon. Martinez isn’t very effective the third time through the lineup and Morejon hasn’t pitched enough to be a starter. So while it does use an extra roster spot, using those two for a 5/4 split might maximize both while allowing Morejon to develop as a pseudo starter.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 20, 2022, 1:13 pmMartinez is at least going to get a chance to establish himself as a starter before they start considering alternatives. He clearly wants the chance to be a starter and I don't think the 10 starts he made last year are enough to draw a definitive conclusion off of. Maybe he'll make some adjustments now that he's used to seeing major league hitters again. I do agree that we should look to add another similar type pitcher though. I predicted we would sign Trevor Williams in the other thread. Another guy who could start or come out of the pen would help our depth.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 20, 2022, 10:08 pmIf he proves capable as a starter I don't know why you would piggyback him. To me if he's a starter it means you're counting on him to go 5+. If he does that with our bullpen I would rather go the traditional route. If we're up big or the bullpen needs a day sure. Otherwise get the ball to the guys you're paying to dominate.
