2023 offseason

Winker is interesting. He's absolutely dominated righties for most of his career, but struggled last year. His home/road splits are pretty consistent for his career, so it's not all just Cincinnati. It sounds like his teammates questioned his toughness and dedication in Seattle though. He's also not a very good fielder. If he bounces back he could be an elite platoon bat. Is gambling on that worth potentially damaging the clubhouse?

As we look for back end starting rotation help. Maybe a couple of names we could look at are Matthew Boyd and Dylan Bundy.

Boyd, based on health, and working with Niebla, could he get back to his DET numbers, when he was the talk of the league.

Bundy, while he had a mid 4 ERA in MIN, he still threw 140 innings last season, and has usually been fairly reliable. IF the price is right, could be a decent #5 guy.

I'm of the opinion that they should try to sign someone in the Senga, Walker, Taillon tier. Then look for an affordable 5th starter whether it be Martinez or someone else. After that I would start looking at cheap bounce back candidates. Someone like Boyd or Duffy could fit in that regard.

I agree that the 4th starter needs to be of better ilk, such as the ones you mention, and include Quintana in that vein as well. I still see Martinez as a RP best, and so the 5th starter would be the Davies, Boyd, Bundy, Duffy type. Someone with proven ML tenure and health, why I like Bundy, at least he posts every 5th day. And then we can mix and match as the younger MiL guys prove themselves or build up innings, like the Morejon, Groome, Weathers types, and for the occasional spot start.

We seem to be in agreement that they sign a bigger impact SP as the 4th SP ... but that uses more money ... no problem but remember still need money to sign a couple of hitters.

Depending on the cost of the SP and the hitters ... I see as the 5th (6th +) SP one where they gamble on the internal candidates rather than spending on someone who, at best is a #5.

In the money deployment would go bigger on SP (4th) and one hitter ... then pivot to a second hitter with what may be left. One SP and one hitter ... if they are good and reliable ... will combine for about $25MM by themselves. Plop another $5MM on a second hitter ... to $30MM ... and that will already be into the second tier for CBT. Don't see going higher just to add mediocrity.

I guess a strategic choice with $30MM (if there is that much) ... 2 higher quality, higher cost / 2 low cost filler OR 4 mediocre adds at the $7-8MM range.

In a surprise ... Padre hitting coach Mike Brdar has departed to become the hitting coach in DET.

So, Padres looking for a new hitting coach.

Maybe they should go get the hitting coach from WAS that is Soto's guru, and bring him here.

If they have $30M to spend on 2 SPs, and 2 Bats. Lets say that the Senga, Walker level guys will be $15M, and then a Davies for $2-3M. Thats $18M, leaving $12M for two bats. Not going to get a top tier bat, but should be able to get you a 2nd tier bat, and a nice bench piece. MLBTR is predicting Segura at 2 years and $18M, thats $9M, slide Crone to 1B, and still have $3M for a bench add or maybe 2.

Tatis - RF, Soto - LF, Machado - 3B, Crone - 1B, Segura - 2B, Kim - SS, Campusano - DH, Grisham - CF, Nola - C. Of course Nola and Campusano can bounce between DH and C.

That's Kevin Long and he signed an extension with the Phillies not too long ago.

Crossed my mind ... the hitting coach for WASH from 2017-21 was Kevin Long who left after 2021 and landed in PHIL for 2022 to be with his buddy Joe Girardi (now departed). Long has had a great career as a hitting coach with NYY (2007-14) and METS (2014-17) then WASH (2017-21).

Could the Padres get him out of PHIL ... does he want out. Long shot.

Just guessing but think both Senga and Davies will price higher ... not sure about Walker.

Could live with Segura at 2B at that price.
