Then look for an affordable 5th starter whether it be Martinez or someone else. After that I would start looking at cheap bounce back candidates. Someone like Boyd or Duffy could fit in that regard.
I agree that the 4th starter needs to be of better ilk, such as the ones you mention, and include Quintana in that vein as well. I still see Martinez as a RP best, and so the 5th starter would be the Davies, Boyd, Bundy, Duffy type. Someone with proven ML tenure and health, why I like Bundy, at least he posts every 5th day. And then we can mix and match as the younger MiL guys prove themselves or build up innings, like the Morejon, Groome, Weathers types, and for the occasional spot start.
We seem to be in agreement that they sign a bigger impact SP as the 4th SP ... but that uses more money ... no problem but remember still need money to sign a couple of hitters.
Depending on the cost of the SP and the hitters ... I see as the 5th (6th +) SP one where they gamble on the internal candidates rather than spending on someone who, at best is a #5.
In the money deployment would go bigger on SP (4th) and one hitter ... then pivot to a second hitter with what may be left. One SP and one hitter ... if they are good and reliable ... will combine for about $25MM by themselves. Plop another $5MM on a second hitter ... to $30MM ... and that will already be into the second tier for CBT. Don't see going higher just to add mediocrity.
I guess a strategic choice with $30MM (if there is that much) ... 2 higher quality, higher cost / 2 low cost filler OR 4 mediocre adds at the $7-8MM range.
I think we were very fortunate with the health of our starters last season. I don't think you really want to be relying on any of Morejon, Groome, Weathers or anyone else in the system to make any significant number of starts. I think we need 2 starters minimum and preferably a third or a swingman type.

Could live with Segura at 2B at that price.
MLBTR has Senga at 5/75 ($15M) and Walker at 4/52 ($13M) and landing in SD. And Quintana who I like because he is LH 2/24 ($12M).
Senga probably gets bid up a little higher, so SD lands Walker or Quintana for around $13-14M.
And Davies was under contract in AZ for under $2M I believe, so he should grab a $3M offer from SD.

I agree, thats why I was thinking the #4 Senga, Walker type, the #5 Davies, Bundy type, the #6 Martinez RP/spot start, and then kids would fill in hopefully brief injury periods.

Yeh, a lot of teams seem to be in on Senga so should eclipse that 5/75 level.
I could see landing Walker or Quintana at those price tags unless the market for them is more robust than we are hearing.
As for Davies … not sure what happened in his signing in 2022 at that contract but he had a couple of years that were around $5MM in one and $8MM in the other as I recall. I like him … just a case can be made that he is nearer the $5MM+ range (plus Boras is his agent … I think).
$20MM for Walker and Davies would work. $9MM for Segura. Then wing it for the rest … if they have $30MM to deploy. Plus, in theory, would have pitching to trade to fill in the blanks.

That #4-5-6 set could cost $30MM by themselves and zip left for two hitters.

If you subscribe to the happy wife happy life philosophy I'm not sure how welcome a reunion would be.
