Should add he was just taken off the IL where he had been for a month (stiff neck). I guess if they were not expecting to resign him and even though he pitched well for them before the injury … might not have though he could get back to his earlier success level after the IL stint.
He is not great but in his time with TB was very effective …
I guess a bit of a gamble for some contender with bullpen problems … but claiming him to be the 14th pitcher he might be enough of an improvement in the pen to get that “extra win” to make the playoffs. Not an expensive claim (1 month salary +/-) … if that doesn’t work out quickly … just DFA him and call up someone else … gone after the season anyway.
Is Wisler currently better that Knehr?

Taking a moment from tonight’s exciting game between all the action to reflect a bit on Kim.
Saw another fine defensive play by Kim which made me think of his future as the SD SS when Tatis returns. Not really a question of the bat … Tatis is superior but his bat should play anywhere on the field. The question is defense.
2022: Kim - DRS 6 (8th in MLB) - UZR/150 6.3 (2nd in MLB)
2021:Tatis - DRS -6 (14th) - UZR/150 -11.2 (26th)
Tatis may be “flashy” but Kim holds the advantage for quality defense
Would add that Kim’s wRC+ is 104 (10th), dWAR 8.1 (10th) … overall WAR 2.9 (11th) elevates him to a decent ML SS for $7MM in 2023 and $8MM in 2024.
A strong case for making Kim the full time SS going forward and move Tatis to the OF replace either Grisham or Profar (if he opts out).
After a rough 2021 … Kim his beginning to look like a great sign by Preller.

Imagine if we could hit…..we’d have a 6 game lead on the Brewers by now…..at least.

Former Padres Luis Perdomo and Taylor Rogers coughed up 8 runs to turn what was a 6-1 lead after 7 into a 10-7 loss in 10.

Looking for the upside of Soto considering we have him for another 2 seasons and his "slump" is currently frustrating (not being sold on how valuable those walks are ahead of Machado).
I looked at his work with RISP ... sort of a clutch / impact proxy.
As a Padre ... .200 BA / .200 SLG ... that is just plan bad
For the entire 2022 ... .184 BA / .322 SLG ... not that impressive even with WASH
BUT (a reason for hope)
In 2021 ... .396 BA / .689 SLG ... now that is impressive (better than Machado) ... and that certainly justified him hitting in the middle of the line-up rather than the second slot.
Bell is not quite as impressive but still reason to hope for a turn around.
As a Padre ... .200 BA / .294 SLG
Overall 2022 ... .252 BA / .378 SLG, so better
2021 ... .253 BA / .418 SLG (which is just about the same BA and lower SLG than Myers)
So both Soto and Bell have the track record to hit in the clutch better than now ... and Soto into the elite category ... somebody turn the switch on ON.

If what you keep doing isn't working (it isn't) then you try something else.
