So I am going to guess Pierce Johnson will be added to 40 and activated for the +1 P on the 28 (26 +2)... as for the position player Alfaro activated ..3 Catchers... unless knee still barking then maybe Beatty

Pure guessing but sounds as though Alfaro is not ready and Pomeranz may not be ready in 2022. So, Beaty (who is on the 40 man and off the 60 day IL as of last week) and Castillo (until Johnson has a couple more rehabs in AAA).

I was reading an article in Forbes that was say that the Padres need more production out of Soto (and secondarily Bell). Something I was already concerned about with only 30 games left to make the playoffs.

Simply the hitter for the past month in SD is a shadow of his past. Yes, he is getting on base via walks but his SLG is way down for his time in WASH reflection a HR pace about half of his history and same with RBI. With the Padres 3 HR / 6 RBI even with Profar getting on base ahead of him and Machado red hot behind him.

Padres paid premium to get one of the best impact hitters in MLB for the playoff run … as yet he is not delivering. They went down the same path with Bell … history production vs with Padres.

Time for both to get back to their norm … but better happen soon as the clock is ticking.

Just as a follow-up on Soto (or more specifically on how the Padres are using Soto).

Padres have settled Soto in the #2 slot in the batting order … he has hit there before with WASH but in a limited amount … overall an OPS+ 80 (below average) and a SLG .446.

However, Soto great success has been batting #3/#4/#5 … OPS+/SLG:

#3 … 106/.538

#4 … 106/. 585

#5 … 109/.586

A lot of PA in those slots and it is there he unleashes his offensive impact … almost 30% better than his production at #2.

So, why are the Padres taking their big time impact addition and put him in one of his least productive spots in the batting order?

Would they get more bang for their buck with Profar - Kim - Soto - Machado at the top of the line-up?

The two SEP 1 adds:

Beaty (not a surprise) for the position player

Knehr (a surprise for me) for the pitcher.

Niko Goodrum got DFA'd by the Astros. As a lefty masher who can play all over the field he might be worth a look. He would probably bring more to the table than Rosario for the rest of the year.

I think Khner is here for Saturday.. if Sean starts he will have a short leash and Khner will piggyback if not altogether Start vs LAD as Sean 1 struggles on the road 5.68 ERA and has even worse #'s at Dodger Stadium.. not sure if BoMel gives him the start or keeps him on a very short leash knowing Khner can pitch 4-5 or more inni gs .. Johnson will be the eventual piece in SD ..maybe 1 or 2 more rehabs ..if all good.. Beatty lhb off the bench..my guess here is if and when Alfaro comes up Rosario goes down

I have Soto with a 145 OPS+ as a Padres

256 .413 .427 .840 145

His BA and OBP are > as a SDP vs Wash for 2022..his slg is lower.. how much does that have to do with #2 spot ?? Vs Petco suppression and adapting to a new team?? I think with Tatis 1 Soto 2 and Manny 3 we will see Soto explode..P are pitching him with 1 out or more constantly .. with Profar failing to get on ahead of him..and although Kim usually gets on when leading off it appears he takes 1 or 2 ABs to adapt to a pitcher often getting that 1 for 3 night on his 3rd trip and not necessarily leading off the inning.. Soto also has a weird stat line with bases loaded ..only .240 career and 0 Grand Slams so maybe his best spot is table setting for Manny on this team at this moment ..With Tatis at 1 he should have more RBI situations and a lot better pitches to hit

MILW loses yesterday … opening a larger gap behind SD and increasing the odds for the playoffs. Per Fangraphs the odds of the Padres to make the playoffs are now 85% (MILW down to 34%). So no slam dunk but the Padres are seen as being in a strong position.

PHIL is at 85%, so a coin flip for the #5 slot vs the #6 slot … ATL is secure for #4.

Johnson had another good rehab in EP yesterday and as soon as he shows he can go back to back (and recover well) expect the will be the first call-back (Knehr down) for the pennant run.

IF back to form … Johnson is a real good add as a set-up man in the pen.

Meanwhile, Pomeranz is beginning to look like a no-show for 2022 … rehab has not gone well.
