2022 Season
Quote from fenn68 on August 6, 2022, 11:47 amGuardians Designate Franmil Reyes For Assignment
Having a horrible season ... but could be a good waiver claim (if he makes it to SD) with open roster space for the moment they could option him to EP to see if he can rebound in AAA in 2022 and get it together in ST (roster room will be there.
Padres need some insurance for the DH in 2023 ... and when on his game Reyes productive ... plus he was a very positive in the clubhouse.
Unfortunately not likely to fall the SD ... and can't be tradde as a 40 roster guy past the trade deadline.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 6, 2022, 11:59 amReyes has not shown any growth as a hitter, probably gone backwards with his injuries albeit seemingly minor, since the one year after acquisition from the Padres. Would be another Voit-type addition but absolutely loves San Diego/guys on the team and maybe that might revive his hitting prowess. Still relatively young and probably a little more than it would cost (in arbitration) to re-sign Drury but still 2 more controllable years. Let's see if he sneaks through and San Diego gets a chance at him.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 6, 2022, 12:19 pmAlso, the Reyes trade was infamous because it moved Trevor Bauer from Cleveland to Cincinnati and Yasiel Puig to Cleveland. With the DFA of Reyes, all of the players in that trade in July 2019 are no longer with the teams that traded for them and some are out of the MLB system altogether. I can still remember Reyes serenading the fans at Petco - he is a special person.

Quote from fenn68 on August 6, 2022, 1:17 pmI guess because of his $4MM+ contract (and will be in ARB 2 this winter) … good chance he does make it through waivers. Once he clears … a FA and can sign with anyone at a negotiated contract for next year (very likely much less that $4MM).
Maybe incentive laden … maybe a minor league deal with a bigger salary if makes the 26 man.
Looking at this 2021 stats … they were impressive. 2022 not so much. Cleveland always has money issues so maybe the don’t want to deal with the ARB increase next year while gambling on a rebound.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2022, 11:00 amWell the Padres losing with STL and PHIL winning is not good BUT MILW losing was more impactful.
MILW went from leading the NL Central (and for most of the year) to first out of the playoffs as STL takes the Division lead and PHIL sneaks into the 3rd WC slot.
Looks like a tight playoff run for SD, STL, MILW, and PHIL with one team falling by the wayside. One great winning streak or one great losing streak will secure the fate of some team ... at least one team will have that occur on the losing side ... better not be the Padres.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 8, 2022, 11:20 amOkay, devils advocate here.....if( or should I say when?) we don't make the playoffs this year, what do we do next?
We can't spend any more money( all tied up in 4 or 5 guys that don't help us make the playoffs) or do we sell off EVERYONE not named Fernando Tatis Jr.( a guy we all love but is available for only 1 out of every 2 games played)?
We obviously can't bring up any young players as our GM has traded them all away. Our nearest help is in Elsinore-only 75 miles via driving but 4 or 5 years via baseball route.
AJ has 100% put himself into a corner. If this team, the ones he's built, falls at the 1st hurdle, I 100% expect him to be gone 05 Oct. 2022
Season is still salvageable. The time is now to do it.
Anyone else have any thoughts what route to take should we fall?

Fair question.
First, Preller was in that awkward position of having a team sitting in a playoff spot but clearly not good enough to advance even IF they made the playoffs … really no offense. He could have not traded for the big adds .. and get blasted for not dealing prospects to improve their chances to win NOW even IF he made the playoffs and quickly got eliminated.
Don’t see this as costing Preller his job since a very good chance he and Siedler are on the same page for these moves. 2022 was setting up as the best chance for SD to win it all in a long time (and probably in the near term future).
As for what he does in the off-season if they don’t make the playoffs or get bounced in the first WC series … guessing more tinkering since 2023 may be the last shot for winning for a long time.
If they don’t win in 2022 or 2023 … then could see a total rebuild heading into 2024 since the pitching staff will have dropped to Musgrove and ???????, virtually no bullpen, Soto heading into his last season, others with only 2 years. Then consider clearly not much in the system to provide replacements. Plus don’t rule out a Machado opt - out of a remaining 5 years / $150MM if he sees the writing on the wall for the team.
Dark days coming in 2024.

Claimed by the Cubs today.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 8, 2022, 12:50 pmSeidler is 100% behind AJ.
Obviously that can change.
I would think AJ is good till Playoffs 2023.
EDIT:He just pulled off the deadline trade of a lifetime.I would think even if it doesn't work he would be given the benefit of the doubt of having done everything he could.
Now,a couple years from now if they don't even "make" a World Series and Soto leaves and all the prospects are gone?
THAT would be a different story.
