2022 Season
Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2022, 1:03 pmPlus don’t rule out Tatis (or Cronenworth) in the OF if Profar does not return … Soto and Grisham and zip going into 2023. Maybe even if Profar returns with a rotation through DH.
Bell is a fine hitter but a DH only who will command $16-20MM. Serviceable DH can be had for less (or just use DH as a rotational slot) … using money already in play to sign to fill other holes … and there will be holes.
Still more bias to move Pomeranz or Hader … both with greater AAV than Kim and at a position that has a better chance to be covered with incumbents.

We could always bring Voit back..likely to be DFAd in Wash..for $3.5 mil

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 3, 2022, 1:18 pmYeah Profar/Grisham and/or Kim are just the type that always bring it in a World Series..remember Exckstein or Moreland MVP WS .. imagine Kim's value in the trade market after an MVP WS...

Quote from Randy Manese on August 3, 2022, 1:24 pmI'm thinking that with Soto on board, Tatis will be more acceptable to playing in the OF and challenging Soto for best young under 25 player in the MLB. I think this also might have a positive impact on Grisham, who recently flashed his skills that we think he has. Grisham looks a little heavier this year and seems to have slowed down both offensively and defensively. If he puts in the work this off-season, this should be one of the best OF's in MLB.
It would be hard to move Kim out of the SS position if he hits anywhere from .260 on up. He is excellent defensively, has good speed and probably enough power to hit 15 HRs if playing regularly. Have to remember that he really is only a 2nd year player and has progressed greatly from last year. He'll just turn 27 after the season ends, so there is still some growth potential and some point in the future we can expect Jackson Merrill to take his place.
Agree that we invest in SP and a less costly closer rather than try to retain Bell and Hader (and/or Pomeranz) at very high salaries. I like Morejon and Castillo (and possibly Cosgrove) from the left side as potential high leverage RPs but probably not as closers. I do believe a RH closer will emerge, but just don't know who that is just yet.

Lamet was just DFA’d by Milwaukee

Would that not be a better use of payroll dollars??
Not to mention would probably get a couple of nice prospects back for Kim as well.
After Batten and Rosario you have nothing. Kim is valuable piece.
Not saying he isnt, Im just saying, who is more valuable, Kim or Bell?
The key is Tatis, if he can stay healthy, then Kim is a luxury that we dont need compared to Bell.
But do you roll the dice and hope that Tatis can stay healthy and you can live with a Batten/Rosario back up. Or keep $7M tied up in a extremely good back up.
Me I would try and keep Bell, and roll the dice.
I would argue Kim is more valuable. His positional versatility and proportional bat combined with youth and speed is greater than what Bell brings at his position.
Im just thinking its more plausible to replace Kim from within the system than Bell.

Probably should not use A vs B analysis … really need to view the composition of the entire roster. Signing Bell long term / big money may reduce money available for SP (already an issue for 2023 and worse in 2024) and may even impact the potential for an extension for Soto.
Basically, take Kim’s money for SP (nothing soon coming in the system) or maybe OF with only Grisham / Soto returning (and Tatis at SS). Bell would not be my first priority.

side: saw a note that Tatis is doing most of his work to get back at SS (less so in the OF) … so that Machado - Tatis - Kim - Cronenworth may just emerge in late August with Bell at DH. Profar - Grisham - Soto in the OF. Myers, Mazara, and Drury just bounce in and out as needed.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 3, 2022, 2:46 pmI still hate the idea of Cronenworth at 1b.
He’s an All Star at 2b….he’s at best average at 1B
Rotate Bell and Myers at 1B/DH…on days Myers sits play Bell at 1B and give a starter a breather at DH.

Quote from fenn68 on August 4, 2022, 4:17 amAs the Padres push for the playoffs (in a close race) … the what have you done for me lately transcends the past performance in running the starting line ups. At the same time the next two months will support or alter the view of the players for 2023.
To that end … the past 30 days OPS (>.700 is good, >.750 very good):
.954 … Profar (maybe securing his lead-off spot and getting momentum for his opt out)
.834 … Cronenworth
.803 … Grisham (power has shown up, securing his use in CF
.794 … Kim (getting better all season and will be hard to bench him)
.780 … Machado
.636 ,.. Alfaro
Now add Soto, Bell, Drury … and Tatis coming soon. That will yield a pretty good 1 - 9 and a quality bench likely with Drury - Myers - Mazara - Nola to be used as needed and should maintain good offensive support. Of course, the baseball gods can turn performance from plus to minus in a blink of an eye … but for now … powerful.
Melvin will have a lot of flexibility to rest some players, cover injuries, and maximize any match-up advantages. I see the DH role helping a lot in keeping Kim in the line-up when Tatis returns and playing SS.

2.65 … Darvish (5 starts)
2.70 … Snell (5 starts) … living up to his reputation of a 2nd half pitcher
3.45 … Clevinger (5 starts) … seems to be improving each outing
4.24 … Musgrove (4 starts)
4.57 … Manaea (4 starts)
