2022 Season
Quote from lafnboy13 on August 3, 2022, 12:09 pmQuote from 84padres on August 3, 2022, 11:29 amI wish Will could hit because he is a pretty good 1B . He made 3 plays in the Double Header that were pretty good to great . I forgot how athletic he is .
I would not mind bringing him back as a bench piece or Profar insurance with a team friendly contract next season. He made his money and I can't imaging him getting a better shot somewhere else that he's not used to. The devil you know...

Ive mentioned that before, Myers on a $5-7M per year contract is a good ML get. Has defensive versatility and can get hot. His big problem, is he cant carry a team, and that is what he got paid for, and was not worth the contract that SD gave him.

That's the elephant in the room, isnt it. Where to put Tatis? My gut says LF, with Profar moving to CF. But Grisham is really coming alive, so? Profar is great in LF defensively, so? How much time does Tatis spend at DH? Tatis to SS, Kim to 2B, and Crone to 1B, with Bell going DH.
Its a great problem to have.
Kim could be a HUGE trade chip for us in the offseason..will be only making $7mil while being a GG SS for 2023.. cheap cheap..BUT expensive to the Padres where he is more backup 2B/3B/SS than starter with a healthy Tatis and 3 All Stars in front of him... # 3 spec Rosario/Batten and even Howell/Hollis/Leyva(all at AA) could battle it out in ST for Kim's role which becomes more of a 250ABs than 600ABs in 2023..
If we keep Kim then Tatis and Soto cover LF and RF in 23.. or Crone slides to 1B and Kim plays 2B.. if we make a deep run and/or win the WS .. and Kim keeps being Kim in the national stage ..teams will line up to acquire him
I don't see the Padres trading Kim. We are going to be losing all 3 of our current 1B(Drury/Bell/Myers) this offseason. We will need Kim as our starting 2B to allow Crone to move to 1B.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 3, 2022, 12:23 pmLet me ask you this, if we can take Kims $7M number, and put that towards resigning Bell, and use either Rosario or Batten as the back up INF. Would that not be a better use of payroll dollars??
Not to mention would probably get a couple of nice prospects back for Kim as well.

After Batten and Rosario you have nothing. Kim is valuable piece.

Let me put it this way Kim is #37 in MLB for 2022 with 3.3 WAR... Buxton CF is #47... would u trade Kim for Buxton?
Too much value to sit behind Tatis SS and Crone 2B.. period...
And if Kim doesn't start at SS (after Tatis returns/2023 more likely) his value (trade goes way way down)

Not saying he isnt, Im just saying, who is more valuable, Kim or Bell?
The key is Tatis, if he can stay healthy, then Kim is a luxury that we dont need compared to Bell.
But do you roll the dice and hope that Tatis can stay healthy and you can live with a Batten/Rosario back up. Or keep $7M tied up in a extremely good back up.
Me I would try and keep Bell, and roll the dice.

I would argue Kim is more valuable. His positional versatility and proportional bat combined with youth and speed is greater than what Bell brings at his position.

Of course I would do that trade straight up in a heartbeat but the argument is a Kim trade to sign Bell which I am not sold on.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2022, 12:47 pmToo early to make the call on Kim (or any of the other trade options for the winter) … 2 more months of play can really alter the Padres priorities. Poor play - good play - injuries to anyone alters the need.
