2022 Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on May 31, 2022, 3:23 pmI heard Jesse Alger today talking about the baseballs.
He said every humidor in every Park is set at the same temp/humidity.
I believe he said 57% humidity and 70 degrees.
Seems odd considering the playing humidity and temp in every Park will be different.
The difference between the humidity in St Louis and Atlanta with S.D. And Ari. is huge.
The Temp in Miami compared to Seattle, esp right now,is huge.
Seems like it will create huge differences in ball travel at different Parks which would cause more issues than not having a humidor at all.
Just seems to me that they are using trial and error and will be tweaking this over the next few years.
Meanwhile…..offense is suffering esp for certain teams.
Is this lack of offense really what they were after?’

In a sign of how bad hitting is in MLB ... the Padres are #11 in MLB on OBP ... 19 teams WORSE than the Padres.
What is killing them is abysmal SLG ... 27th in MLB. Always blame some of that on April / May in SD and the marine layer at night ... blame a lot on not having Tatis' power ... then question the power shortage from Cronenworth, Grisham, Myers, Hosmer.
I would blame the new ball but every team has that issue. UNLESS the Padres had more "warning track" power hitters than we thought and that is now exposed. Doesn't explain the lack of doubles / triples.
I have been around long enough to know that hitting coaches never really change a team full of hitters ... who generally don't listen (or just cannot change) as ML players. Just a reality of ML baseball hitters.
No offense Fenn but I have to disagree with you
Hitting coaches should be able to pick up flaws in a swing and I'll use Cronenworth as an example.....he seems to really want to hit the HR and his approach with his hands is a palm up palm down swing instead of a little more top hand....Palm to the sky, hit it high, Palm straight and hit it great.....his swing has changed since last year, I don't need the HR but gap doubles work. The other thing is too many guys are rolling off the ball on their front foot...when you spin on your heel your front shoulder opens up instead of hitting against a solid base.
I agree that most hitting coaches can identify flaws that develop ... I think the disconnect is in the players who can't or will not adjust (maybe physical ... maybe mental).
No way all the hitting coaches year after year are incompetent (some are) yet consistently we still see teams struggle with hitting (unless they have elite hitters to start with). Hitting coaches are easy scapegoats.

Maybe the idea is that if all baseballs are prepared the same in the humidor conditions, it eliminates the baseball as a hitting factor when put in play. In the past the baseball is subject to the humidity / temperature of the local environment before it is put in play and therefore reacts differently in each park along with the park conditions during the game.
Basically eliminates one variable ... the physics of the baseball ... and that probably has different effect (from past results) depending on the ballpark conditions.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 31, 2022, 4:43 pmJesse didn’t seem to think it was a good idea to set them all the same no matter the playing environment…..but I guess that’s what MLB was thinking.
Personally I think the playing environment matters….the ball should be under the heat/humidity conditions of that environment in my opinion.
Why can’t the baseballs be stored in the same environment as the playing conditions like they have always been?
All I do know is the way they are playing this year sucks so….

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 31, 2022, 5:40 pmManny doesn’t look right…maybe it’s the elbow?
The problem is the rest of the lineup hasn’t looked right all season.
We may be in trouble.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 31, 2022, 6:40 pmNow Manny's ejected.
It would “seem” that this team is not waiting until the 2nd half to unravel.
I realize I could be over reacting….I hope I am over reacting….but the lack of offense and the poor performance from the bullpen and no Tatis and Manny’s elbow and the fact we obviously won’t make any moves until the deadline (which hopefully won’t be too late)……..it just seems like at least one wheel has has come off and another is wobbly.

Quote from WindsorUK on June 1, 2022, 3:31 pmI was kind of expecting the wheels to fall off on this road trip. St. Louis is the FAR superior team and organization- we won't beat them until we change from the top down.
Need to right the ship immediately or we'll be looking at .500 in the next 10 days.
