2022 Season

PreviousPage 28 of 87Next

Lol I was going to post Naquin from Reds....Hell of a lot cheaper to get than Reynolds and cheaper to resign in the offseason...also deepens the team from CF to 1st man off the bench...

Naquin would start in CF...Grisham would become 4th OF ..Azocar to AAA...

I like to get Naquin or the like sometime over the next 2 weeks to be honest...even if AJP wants to go after an AS level type player at the deadline... Naquin fills a lot of roles and will represent an upgrade offensively to at least 2/3 of our OF if not all of them...

One issue may be the “sellers” of whomever you want. Generally they will try to wait until multiple teams are interested to get the best return … not just the first offer on the table unless they consider it a vast overpay that they don’t expect anyone to top.

The “buying” teams probably want a longer assessment of what they have and their targets (which alternative is best) before moving limited trade chips.

Pretty normal not to see any significant deals until late June / early July but most likely the last two weeks of July … once everyone has a decent assessment of where they stand. Possibly some of the best targets are on teams still in the hunt (in their minds) but could fall out and become sellers.

Pretty sure the Padres and Reds already know where they stand….but I get the Reds waiting for other teams to make the same determination.

Besides the Padres (out of the 12 projected playoff teams..increase it to 16... ) who else needs OF... NYM NY BJ Rays LAA LAD SF Stl Brewers Minnesota Chisox..Dbacks Phillies am I missing any? US.... I think we are the only ones.... Benentendi/Naquin(CF)/Gamel/Reynolds(CF)/Addell CF (not a deadline more like offseason)

Then you got the 3 BATS of JD MART/Mancini and Hanager ...which all 3 could garner interest

My point if you wait you could lose out

Every trade deadline more SP and BP arms move vs Batters... so that helps us too... and with the soon to be glut of P the SDP will have a 3 team deal ..even for a broken down Lamet could net a #15ish spec that should = someone like Naquin

But I like the idea of getting 1 or 2 pieces here "sooner" than later... we need 1 Bat (or 2) besides Tatis... lengthening our Bench

We can't go into the postseason with a bench that includes Alcantara/Cano/Azocar

If we replace that with Kim(Tatis back)/(Grishman/Naquin unconventional platoon)/etc... it's more in line with a postseason bench

That is today … what will be the needs in 2 months? Injuries / slumps may add bidders.

I guess if I am a seller of a quality piece … I want the best return and if the current offer is (in my mind) just in unsatisfactory … no harm in waiting for an offer of someone I actually like or end up in the same place with an unsatisfactory offer.

Also, if I am the seller, and perceive the Padres are desperate to add an OF, I am willing to wait until the Padres move up their offer to someone I want. I am out of the playoffs with our without the trade, so why not trade for who I like … not just a body.

Yeah it’s not the Padres who want to wait…it’s the Sellers with no reason to hurry.

This is the 3rd season in a row the Padres are 30-17.

Next 10 games will do a lot to more clearly understand the Padres season going forward. All against playoff teams based on current standings.

STL … 3 in STL

MILW… 4 in MILW

NYM … 3 in SD

Playing 5-5 over that span would be fine … and probably a challenge.

I give this a low probability … but maybe something Preller needs to worry about as he makes roster moves (and looks ahead to 2023).

MLBTradeRumors had a piece on Profar and his career ups and downs. The key for me in this was their view … based on his 2022 performance … he actually opts out of his remaining year (2023) and really does not need to score a major contract to better his 2023 salary (and buyout of mutual option for 2024). Keeping in mind that Scott Boras is his agent … an agent that loves FA negotiations … has to see that as a real possibility.

Not a ton of great FA OF options coming on the market and a lot of needs for OF.

IF Profar joins Myers as a FA, going into the Padres OF is Grisham and ?????. Then layer in the odds of Hosmer opting out setting up a need for a 1B. Until all that is clear … using “controlled” trade chips for “rentals” may not make sense … actually “rentals” unless for some marginal prospects is questionable. Bigger need to try to acquire long control assets.

I know a lot of fans don’t like Profar … but in the league (and the stats guys) may see a lot more value given the landscape of ML OF.

Josh Bell 1B is a FA

Gallo FA

Judge FA.. dont think he leaves NY

Myers

Nimmo CF FA

Benintendi

If they opt out

Profar OF

Hosmer 1B

JD Martinez DH (Voit moves to 1B or platoons with someone or gets traded)

Comforto OF

Naquin CF/OF

Gamel OF/IF

In any case IF Profar and Hosmer both opt out.. we will have close to $100 mil to work with

Possible "in house" options

1)CJ Abrams (CF/OF) should be ready

2) Eustery Ruiz (CF/OF) should be ready

3) Robert Hassell (CF/OF) might be ready

So not too concerned for 2023...

Musgrove/Manea/Rogers.. at various $$ amounts should be priorities

The rest will work itself out
