2022 MLB Draft

PreviousPage 3 of 20Next

In a perfect world

15th Lesko

39th Kumar

53rd Ben Joyce (105mph,, BP only)

Would be a nice addition to our farm which seems a bit loaded on top bats and a bit thin on top end Pitchers atm... with perhaps Susana (long ways away) being the best upside P in the system... Kumar and Joyce would be almost instant help late 22 if needed ..2023 in the mix... Lesko would be 1 or 2 with Susana down the road..

PADS could then go for a couple of Mashers (DH /1B types with + power) before going back to high upside bats and a mix of P college and HS with projection like they usually do....

I'd be OK with this

If the Mets don't take Lesko with one of their two picks ahead of San Diego, then I think we have a real good chance to land him. Not sure the Prielipp has the same upside but a possibly fall back if Lesko is gone.  If both gone, Preller will go with the best prospect available at the 15th slot, likely an OF.

I must agree. The Padres farm system is starting to look a bit like it did 20 years ago. You know, 1 pitcher with big upside but who is a long shot to make it and a bunch of bottom of the rotation possibilities. Gore and hopefully Musgrove are going to need help. After trading Lange, Susana is the only high upside pitcher the Padres have and he is a long way away. I would love your draft but I don't see it happening for several reasons. I personally would be happy with Lesko in the first and another reasonably high upside pitcher somewhere later on.

Jim Callis just came out with his MOCK 1st round. Had Padres taking Carl Crawford’s son at #15. Buys into the recent Preller style of young, athletic, up the middle players … and that is Crawford who is ranked around #12-14 as I recall.

Have seen differing opinion on his hit tool (and for me that is the key factor in selecting a bat that high) … but if the Padre’s scouts think it is there, I would be fine with the pick. A lot less risk and a potential for a longer / healthier career than a pitcher. Could be arriving in 2026 when most of the current OF crop is gone (except maybe Hassell and Woods).

——————-

He also had them in the Comp A round take a LHP, HS … Ferris(?) who was ranked #17 but has been inconsistent this spring and not sure about his commitment to college creating the slide in Callis’ mind.

Most know there’s little I like more than an athlete like Crawford.

The old saying “you can’t teach speed” comes to mind.

Watching his videos he reminds me of Jazz Chisholm…he’s confident and demonstrative…...hopefully he adds some muscle and power to go with the skills he already possesses.

Bottom line…I prefer pitching pitching and more pitching this year….but if Crawford is the pick I’d be OK with it.

My preferences also lean toward pitching.  I like Lesko #1 (#15) and Ferris in the comp round (#39).  However, I don't have a problem with best player available and Preller and staff have done well recently in that regard.

Mock: Top 5 shuffle as Rocker enters 1st round

https://theathletic.com/3409886/2022/07/10/mlb-draft-2022-top-100-ranking/

You don’t see any pitchers here in the top 14, and that’s not an accident – the pitching crop has been decimated by injuries, with eight players on this list still out after Tommy John surgery, at least six of whom would likely have gone in the first round if healthy. There’s a small chance there are no pitchers taken in the top 10 picks, which hasn’t happened since 1979.

It is one of those years I have no idea even the direction the Padres will take at #1 ... apparently neither do any of the mock draft types from a consensus view.

Callis is basically suggesting the pick could be any one of three SS or three LHP or Lesko ... less than a week out and that is a pretty big shot group.

Although Lesko has been tossed around even post TJ in April (using Quantrill as the logic Preller may use) ... but a LOT of elite prospect pitchers are out on TJ ... so, might Preller choose to go SS at #15 and wait for one of those TJ upside picks to be around at their Comp Pick or 2nd round.

On Lesko (or any of the recent TJ arms) they likely will not hit full season play until 2024 ... then add development time ... it would be a long wait to get any ML impact (if any) ... do the Padres (Preller) have that luxury of time.

Therefore, maybe a SS (who may be shifted another position) could be call at #15. Athletic SS is in Preller's wheelhouse. Fine with me if the pick can HIT and is not a 4.5 tool guy who just has to learn how to hit.
