2022 MLB Draft
Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 11, 2022, 3:45 pmI think this is a nice draft to be #15 in.. usually elite arms don't get past 1st 5-7 picks..from the look of things we will be able to pick the top elite P in this draft (TJ be damned)... or switch directions and go position player 1st (lol) ...

Quote from fenn68 on July 12, 2022, 1:18 pmJust listened to Keith Law … no firm insight on Preller’s strategy … so an open playing field. However, he did insert Rocker into the mix.
Interesting thought (for the Padres or another team) … he could see Rocker sign quickly … go to AA as a RP for a few tune-up appearances … then be called up to the ML in the pen during this season, and he could “help” … next year return him to the minors to get back to starting. Still since little has been disclosed on his perceived injury … carries some long term risk … Law did note that Rocker has lowered his arm slot so don’t know if that helps or hurts.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 4:33 pmRocker COULD rise fast but that is a lot of projection on a guy that has only 11 innings in an independent league this spring. Sitting in the mid-90s although upper 90s early but could not hold that level per one report. No real pitching for over a year … what kind of endurance would he have pitching at the ML level to the end of the season. Can a team run an eight man pen while managing his workload?
Scott Boras is his agent, and he is never without a challenge to deal with … think money … think option to go to Japan if not getting the money.
Still may be a good pick … just helping in 2022 may be a reach.

Padres
Pick: RHP Kumar Rocker, Tri-City ValleyCats ($4,082,900 slot value)
Even with the news he had a shoulder cleanup procedure in September, Rocker has climbed draft boards these last few weeks because he's looked fantastic with his independent league team. Rumors persist that several teams are looking at him as a possible bullpen piece in the second half and the Padres seem like the perfect candidate for such a move. GM AJ Preller loves to be bold and they have the need. Rocker in the big-league bullpen a few weeks after the draft a la Chris Sale in 2010 is a distinct possibility, regardless of whether he lands in San Diego or elsewhere. (CBS Sports top 30 rank: No. 25)
Interesting CBS mock

I'm sorry...but you can't teach 105.
You take that chance that he can develop the other pitches and at worse you have a dominant 8th/9th inning guy in 1-2 years.

Projected early 4th rd.. Yeah I would go 3rd rd 💯... only reason is he is viewed as a RP only.. but to me that's like saying take Ryan Wethers over Josh Hader ..

Worth the 3rd-4th round pick. As it is he has very little command and no effective secondary pitch but even if he does not develop those secondary pitches … 104+/- FB might with just a little command play in the ML late innings. Not as though any of the 3rd/4th rounders have that high a probability of major success.
Chapman was that guy when he signed with CINN … so might work.
