2022 MLB Draft

PreviousPage 2 of 20Next

I wonder if big power college bats with limited athletics will be more popular in middle rounds with the DH option... league guide...

Not opposed to taking a shot at high upside arms early and often... BUT if 2 or 3 of the best Bats available drop to us cause other teams are doing the same ahead of us..Take the hitter at #15

In this latest mock draft all of the true quality hitters are taken in the beginning of the draft. Only 2 pitchers are taken before the Padres choice, leaving them with the top pitching prospect in the draft available. Mid 90s FB, best in draft double plus changeup and above average control. Dylan Lesko seems close to guaranteed to make the majors, while all of the hitters still available have question marks. We will see. Personally I would rather have a top 3 pitcher than a hitter in the 12-15 range, but that's me.

Yeah Lesko is sort of a poor man's Gore....I like him a lot...

A few good things about Preller is that he recognizes talent, knows how to draft and doesn't show bias. I trust him to take the best talent available regardless of need. If any talent drops Preller will see it.

Yeah he is pretty uncanny at getting secondary pieces (Cronesworth/Estury Ruiz..looking like a steal now) in trades or obscure prospects (Tatis jr) and his drafts have been superior...

Interesting note in Keith Law's latest mock on The Athletic. He says the Padres are being linked to Kumar Rocker with the idea that he could help out of the bullpen this season.

I was thinking along those lines in rd 2.. with the 105mph BP arm from Tennesse would also make a story College WS and WS in same season...Kumar can be SP while Tennesse man *can't thunk of his name..is BP arm exclusively ..why scouts think late 2nd /3rd rd projection...

The "favorite" of mock drafts seems to be HS RHP Lesko ... recovering from TJ but prior was considered a Top 5 pick potential (maybe the Quantrill effect but Preller does like going high upside). However others seem to think he may go prior to the Padres' pick. MLBPipeline's #14.

If Lesko is gone, many seem to think the Padres go with college LHP Prielipp ... also recovering from TJ put prior was considered a Top 5 pick potential. Again high upside. MLBPipeine's #24.

Both make sense given Preller's history of taking risk and going high upside.

Saw Law's call on Rocker (MLB #39) ... not sold on him.

Two mocks has some off the wall calls on position players for the Padres' pick at #15: 1) #26 SS/2B/CF Williams ... HS ... may be the smallest player in the draft BUT some scouting has him as the best HS hitter (little power) and speed ... probably not a SS but does fit the Preller model; 2) #37 Wallace ... RHH 3B ... college ... power is his calling card ... I think this mock just dipped into the bucket and pulled his name some he does not fit the Preller profile at all (not for a 1st round pick).

I am leaning towards either Lesko or Prielipp for the high upside coming out of the #15 pick and the long term benefit since the minors are not stocked with major SP prospects.

Since all the top bats are projected to be gone by #15 ... taking a bat at #15 is a big risk too and probably players without the high upside.

I saw baby OF Crawford to us too but he has risen all the way to top 10 .was like 37th early in process...

Lesko is as good as Gore was coming out of HS only reason he and like 3 other P will be there at 15th is TJ surgeries...literally all top 5 P in this draft are TJ dudes... could be a blessing at #15 getting potential TOR...

Keep an eye on a College bat like Saric (C) if some teams ahead of us gamble on 2 or more of these arms.. 1 or 2 of the top 10 players (likely the College Bats) would be therebat #15... and C in a couple yrs is likely a need for us...dont think the team is sold on Campusano behind the dish.. as Brett Sullivan (backup type C acquired in the trade with Brewers for Carantini) has been catching 60+% of the games at El Paso and is considered a better defender ..as well as can hit a bit... if Campy was viewed as a super star C of the future he would be getting most of the C reps at EP, instead of DHing...
